Bored recruits

Did anyone else see tinkle and co with a couple recruits at friday's football scrimmage? they looked bored as all hell as marzo and hill tried to get them to play catch. isn't there a sorority we can drop these fellas off at...

Imagine the staff walking them out there... "no matter what you do, you will always play second fiddle to the football team."... "aren't they division II or some shit like that?"..."It's I-AA, we'd rather beat up on bad schools than risk losing to decent ones"..."man, that's fucked up."..."sure is"

Actually, the people around us were commenting on how good it was that basketball people were at the scrimmage, supporting the football team -- and that the football players should do the same for the basketball team. Guess it just depends on how you want to look at it.

I could not agree more. I spotted cc and bagley at a basketball game towards the end of last year but that was about it.

I'm actually not sure if they were recruits as I was sitting on opposite sides of field but am just assuming they were as they weren't people I definitely recognized and I saw duchesne guiding an unfamiliar place around the business building.

If this is the case it wasn't really a sign of support, it was tinkle & co trying to feed off the football team's success by trying to impress hoops recruits with it. I think it would've had the opposite effect.

Even so, I cannot agree more with your point. It'd be great if the football players did as they used to and led the student section. I know us students down in the front row, who often get yelled at by others to sit, could use some help.

Over the course of the last 3 years I have had several chances to watch games and from what I remember there have been griz football players there. I know for a fact that they are coming to watch the ladies play cause I see them all the time. But it is not like football where the basketball players can go to the game on Saturdays. The football players are usually in a study hall or watching film until later in the evening. Saturday nights there is no excuse for them to not be there but during the week I can understand.

Tinkle has used the atmosphere of game day at FB games as did the coaches before him to recruit. I can tell you first hand that having a player on the field at a fall FB game has made a difference. The players often just see the support without judging what sport it is for and are impressed. They don't often get here for BB games since they are playing then and have no real idea what that experience is like.

Over the years I have escorted many dozens of recruits around UM. The only one who didn't act bored on his recruiting visit was Brian Salonen. He was excited to learn and asked such questions as "What is a credi hour?"

It is generally an extremely frustrating experience to try to have a meaningful conversation with a young recruit who has no perspective beyond high school. The problem is compounded when an athlete is from outside Montana, although the Montana kids have nearly the same level of difficulty.

So if this kid acted bored, I'll bet that he is using boredom to mask his discomfort at being totally in a strange sitation. Those coaches earn their money.

While montanan's may like their FB, the hoops program is the one
that beat a bunch of D1 teams last year and has a much greater
probability of acheiving greatness.
On the plus side Missoula is a great town and UM is a great school. As I've said before the AD and everyone else should
support basketball. The potential is great. Ray Giacolleti used to
take recruits on bumper card races at EWU; it was a big hit and
remarkably he recruited pretty good players to EWU(a dump).
Go griz.

So based on that, I take it that Salt Lake City does not have bumper cars, whihc ultimately cost Giacoletti his job.

Ballhog, I do hope you post this in jest, right??!!

"the hoops program is the one

You're joking right??... You must be, because that statement is laughable in SO MANY WAYS.....

The BB team would have to have had playoff winis the last fourteen years to be greatness.....

you missed the point JP. I'm not saying that it isn't DI, or whatever the current "sexy term" is these days.
