Big Sky Stats as of 12-03-2012

I was poking around on the NCAA site looking at where the Griz ranked in various stat categories (was curious) and figured while I was there I might as well put together a list in case anyone else was interested.

Not sure if anyone else will find these interesting or not, but the link below has the info for all Big Sky teams.
You can click on a team to see that one team's rankings only, or just scroll down the main page to see all of the Big Sky teams on one page.

Interesting that the Griz are dead last in offensive rebounds right now...and dead last by far. The 2nd to last team averages .7 offensive rebounds per game more than the Griz.

The Griz are #3 in the country in 3 point shooting % though which is pretty damn impressive, and also #25 in FT%.

You can really tell this is a team without a post presence... And looking at how we rank for steals you can see how badly we are missing Will Cherry (Who was #6 in the country last year in steals).

For our Cat friends...they seem to take care of the all pretty well (very few turnovers), but can't seem to shoot worth a shit, or defend. They shoot a very bad 38.5% from the field, yet give up over 50%. Both are near the bottom in the NCAA. Rough year so far for the Cats.

Anyway, thought some of you might enjoy checking that out without having to dig through the NCAA's site.

Some pretty cool stats, interesting to see where all the teams in the conference are in the nation at certain stats.

Last year's team was very low in offensive rebounds too. If we had redshirted Qvale for 3 years, this wouldn't have happened. ha-ha.

True, the Griz weren't exactly great in offensive rebounds last year either, but it wasn't this bad :( Last year we averaged 9.1 (#289), and the previous year we had 10.2 per game (#262). This year we are 5.8... huge huge drop off. Our assist numbers are down quite a bit too, which is expected with our lack of an inside game so far.

Maybe we can suit up Tinkle and no one will notice :P

Tinkle's post game comments after the BYU and SF games made it sound like he's going to be focusing on toughness quite a bit in the practices leading up to conference.

i think politicans get in trouble when they're not faithful to their character. look at the pathetic michael dukakis, trying to act like a warrior in that foolish helmet in the tank, or ann and mitt romney trying to convince us they once ate rats with a flashlight. it just sent big turds hopping across our siht detectors.

so with this year's version of our griz. meet any of them in a dark alley, and you'd walk right up to them and ask directions to the nearest bar. tough? these kids are swizzle sticks. i've seen more heft in ballet dancers. little wonder we're not rebounding the ball. we don't have the size or muscle, and we won't. no amount of "toughness" is go to change that. not this year's team.

if i were coach, i'd lighten up. we'd run. we'd gun. we'd have fun. move the ball, hot potato, hot potato. first open shot, fire it! no offensive rebound? back on defense! no transistion baskets. trapping pressing defense. this team is a race car, not a truck. these kids are gazelles, not piano movers. if cherry can come back, we're the most athletic team in the big sky. nobody else comes close. but to walk-the-ball-up-the-court-and-pass-it-around-the-horn-and-around-the-horn-and-hope-to-get-an-offensive-rebound....forget it! ain't gonna happen! you gotta go with what ya got, and what we got this year is one of the quickest most athletic teams i've ever seen at montana. play to their strengths!

tough? ah, no. not these kids. but talented none the less.

They are tough, but lack size that is tough. Huge difference, and no fault of the players or coaching staff. Our perimeter defense is tough. In Cherry, Gregory, Deshields, Henderson we have tough penetrators when the commit to doing it (yes I am talking to you Deshields).

I too feel this team is best suited for pressure, traps, and transition offense. That will improve drastically when Cherry comes back. He plays the lanes better than anyone, not only on this team, but amongst the best in the nation. Our other defenders are good at denying the ball, and a few pretty good at picking it off the dribble. Love how Gregory times his attempted picks from ballhandlers. Wish he would go for it more .

UCLA is having a similar problem. But, I have to wonder if Cherry returning is going to truly improve this team as much as we think he will....UM is simply not into the games like they were. That might be why the coach got T'd up the past couple of games....no electricity yet....and the weakest I have ever seen the Big Sky...

Tough call, but I think to date if we had Will all season we only would have dropped BYU and maybe CSU(only cause deshields played a little like Will in that one), but even BYU would have had a much different outcome! Unless coach, plays to these guys strength, which is run and gun and pressure D, we wont be much without big men, and that wont happen at all this season! It will work maybe in the BigSky, but we need not do that, LETS RUN AND GUN FOR CHERRY AND WARD!!
