MBBALL Big Sky Progress (Feb 19,21)

I guess there’s enough interest (mostly here at IdaGriz ;) ) to keep this going.

Seems to me that the key feature of this coming week is that three of the four top contenders play both their games on the road. Besides the Montana teams, that includes Eastern Washington, which moved from #6 to 4 last week. With one of their games being at Portland State, they may have a short stay at that level. The other road warrior, Idaho, looks to be in for a rough week.

However all this plays out, we could see some more big swings in the standings.

Portland State (11-2) … Idaho … EWU
Montana State (9-4) … @ WSU … @ ISU
Montana (8-5) … @ ISU … @ WSU
Eastern Wash (7-6) … @ Sac State … @ PSU
No Colorado (7-7) … bye … NAU
Weber State (7-7) … MSU … UM
Idaho (6-7) … @ PSU … @ Sac State
Sac State (5-8) … EWU … Idaho
No Arizona (4-10) … bye … @ NoColo
Idaho State (3-11) … UM … MSU

News snippets on the web say that many Big Sky teams have accumulated a lot of injuries ... no surprise at this stage of the season. Sac State was mentioned as being especially hard hit. Of course, overall numbers are often less important than the particular players/skills that go down. Anyone have info on specific cases?

The Bobcats have the most significant injuries so far. Three significant losses — Waka Mbatch (athletic rim protector), Cavin Holden (dynamic playmaker, elite shooter), Davian Brown (elite shooter).

Eh. Sac State is down its literal best player and what would've been one of the frontrunners for POTY. They'd likely be firmly in contention with him(Jeremiah Cherry) playing. Holden and Mbatch are not stars but are rotation guys. Holden was on 37/31 splits - hardly an elite shooter. Brown is good, but not great. The Griz are also down three rotation guys, just nobody of Browns calibre. Not that this is a contest, but I think the team hurt most in terms of W-L is very clearly Sac State. Cherry averaged 10 a game for UNLV last year on 23 starts. He was averaging 18/10 prior to his injury this season.

UNC has a very favorable schedule to end the season. They very well could end up 3rd/4th.

I had to miss the game Saturday, but were those guys out against the Griz??

I would really like to see Montana put together a run to end the Season.
I believe they have the talent, I just don't get what the hurdle is with turnovers and cold streaks with this team.

“Back in the saddle again.”

Eastern Wash (7-6) @ Sac State (5-8) … 8:00

Only one small change in the standings, but things have certainly tightened up.

Eastern Wash (8-6) … @ PSU
Weber State (8-7) … UM
No Colorado (7-7) … NAU
Idaho (6-8) … @ Sac State
Sac State (5-9) … Idaho
No Arizona (4-10) … @ NoColo
Idaho State (4-11) … MSU

Schedule for Today

Eastern Wash (8-6) @ PSU (12-2) … 3:00
Montana State (9-5) @ ISU (4-11) … 4:00
No Arizona (4-10) @ NoColo (7-7) … 6:00
Montana (8-6) @ WSU (8-7) … 7:30
Idaho (6-8) @ Sac State (5-9) … 8:00

An early (Sunday?) schedule had the Griz-Weber game being televised on ESPNU. That's gone away, but it may be why they start at 7:30.

GO GRIZ!

Anybody else following Big Sky games?

Idaho State leads the kitties at the half, 50-30. What's up with the Bengals all of a sudden?

Meanwhile EWU leads PSU by 8 with less than a minute to go.

Wow! EWU did upset PSU ... somewhat decisively, 67-55. The Vikings have now lost two of their last three game. Still have a good conference lead, however.

League play has turned into 1-10 beating up on each other. PSU might be the only team with any semblance of a shot at a 14 seed by the time this is over.

Not sure that Portland would make it to a 14-seed, assuming they even end up as the auto-bid. Zero chance for anyone else.

With the top three teams all losing yesterday, it;s safe to say that no team from the BSC looks worth diddly-squat. One small consolation from watching a lot of results from the other one-bid conferences: There are some really bad teams out there.
