[Updated: 4:57 p.m.] Jason Harris, Sacramento State's leading scorer and rebounder and the Big Sky Conference's preseason Player of the Year in several publications, was declared academically ineligible Thursday and will miss at least four games.
Harris, who is not expected to play in the Hornets' Big Sky opener against Portland State tonight, did not meet conference requirements of a 2.0 grade-point average. He has enrolled in a winter session course and could regain his eligibility by Jan. 19. Winter session grades are posted from Jan. 19-24.

The 6-foot 4-inch senior swingman will not play Saturday against Eastern Washington or in games next week at Idaho State and Weber State. The Hornets host Montana State on Jan. 19 and Montana on Jan. 21.

"Obviously Jason didn't take care of his business," said Sacramento State coach Jerome Jenkins. 'Everybody else did.

"It's bigger than basketball for me. This is a life lesson for Jason. He has to take care of his own individual business."

Harris averaged 17.5 points last season en route to earning Big Sky Newcomer of the Year and first-team all-conference honors. He was averaging 14.4 points and 5.7 rebounds in 14 games this season.

He could be back for msu and Um games

Just four games? Damn. That doesn't seem too harsh, really. Branden Miller ends up losing 20+ games by being booted here at MSU. But just our luck, Harris will be back for the Cats and the Griz. But maybe he won't be too sharp.

At least 4 games. Could be more if he can't pass a simple winter session class.

It might not be as simple as it sounds. First off he is a Senior and is not even carrying a 2.0. I would guess he has already taken all his easy elective classes. If he doesn't possess good study habits thus far he may not do as well as expected, maybe he gets his grades up. maybe he doesn't. Sac is pretty good even without him, but they are way better with him.

Griz dont have a problem with this

Just like all the cat fans in the world

You're right. The griz have never had their star player have to sit out because of academic reasons. That hasn't happened in at least a year.

The difference between Swilly (mind you I am not speaking of all griz fans...just swilly) and cat fans is reality. We know what has happened to us in the past (how could we forget with griz fans constantly reminding us). Apparently Swilly has forgotten about a certain star player who was academically ineligible LESS THAN A YEAR AGO. I am just repaying the favor of reminding him of the past, as I know every good griz fan would if a cat fan was making fun of a football coach that was dealing drugs. That's all...

Larry K is a very good coach and runs a good program.

Swilly on the other hand needs to get his memory checked, or take of the maroon glasses....one or the other.

Fair enough, but just to let you know--I was talking about this year. I realize that under Fat kennedy we were poor academically but I would rather forget about those days and think of the future

OH...you were talking about this year...My bad. So a cat fan can make fun of a coaching getting busted for drugs, or a bball player getting busted for raping an underage girl...and say how that type of thing would NEVER happen at MSU this year. You're right, I don't think ANY griz fan would be all over us for that.

It was nice chatting with you, but it's time to hit the town. I hope you have more plans than hanging out on a message board on a friday night of winter break (Damn I wish I was still a student)...I'm sure you have plans for tonight :jack:

If I remember correctly, we've had academic casualties the last 3 years, Kamarr, Booker (I think) and Mansell. It also happened under Holst although I don't recall the specifics. This year's team has broken that trend and is to be commended!
