Big Sky Podcast Network Power Rankings--Griz still #4

Here's a link to the weekly Big Sky Podcast Network Power Rankings: http://www.montana-mint.com/2019/09/23/big-sky-week-4-power-rankings-bobcats-take-top-spot/

It's similar to what we did during basketball season---write ups on every team, typically the Griz, Cats, and Vandals receive extra attention.

Our panel of 14 voters from 6 Big Sky schools still has Montana at #4, but believe the Griz are positioned as well as they could be for a return to the playoffs. Here's a preview of the Griz section:

The worst we can say about Montana heading into conference play is they haven’t been tested the way Weber State, UC Davis, and Montana State have, though again, Montana looked strong in a convincing 20 point win over Monmouth en route to the Grizzlies’ third FCS win. Dalton Sneed was electric through the air (334 yards, 4 TDs), but maybe more importantly, the immergence of running back Marcus Knight (21 carries, 148 yards, 1 TD) gives Montana one of the league’s better threats on the ground. This week, Montana faces their first FCS elite on the road at UC Davis. A win would catapult Montana into the top 10, but even staying competitive in their first real test of 2019 would go a long way in proving the alleged Return to Dominance has truly begun.

Who are the idiots that think the Griz schedule has been easier than the Cats to this date???? Its simply not true.

Oregon...much much much better than Texas Tech

North Alabama beat Western Illinois, who BTW IS WINLESS INCLUDING A LOSS TO TENNESSEE TECH

Monmouth is much better than SEMO...Monmouth will be a playoff team, and potentially win their conference, with one of the best QB/RB combos in the country. SEMO has a win over Southern Illinois and a D2.

And South Dakota and Norfolk are probably about a wash.

Who the fuck is saying that crap to this point???

Monmouth would have to win their conference to be a playoff team. I believe their conference only allows one bid. It will be them or Kennesaw state who will earn the spot.

Holy shit.

Oregon > Texas Tech
UNA > WIU
USD > Norfolk

I'll give you
SEMO > Monmouth

Come on.

That's not even touching the fact that there's no way in hell MSU has looked better than Weber or UCD.

I'd keep in mind---the Cats are not the only listed team. UC Davis and Weber have no question played a tougher OOC than Montana. Montana and MSU have a close OOC---not counting FBS buy games, which I don't really care about, SEMO on paper does look better than any team Montana's played. That's not to say the Cats have played a tough schedule---WIU and Norfolk aren't exactly lighting the world on fire, but neither are South Dakota, North Alabama, or Monmouth. It's more context to say we haven't seen the Grizzlies against anyone who looks like they're in the conversation for the FCS playoffs, but also, the Grizzlies have taken care of what they can at this point.

As one of the "prestigious" 14 that vote in this poll I'll gladly take bribes to influence votes.

Haha, but seriously I think right now there's 4 tiers.

Playoff contenders: Weber, Montana, Davis, State

In the mix but needs to make a run: Idaho, EWU, NAU

Spoilers, probably not in but could knock someone out: Sac, PSU,

Meh: ISU, Poly, UNC, SUU

Not unless something has changed since 2017. K-State won the auto-bid that year, and Monmouth received an at-large chance. Got drubbed at Northern Iowa, 46-7, in the first round ... but they were in the playoffs.

They would have to go through Kennesaw State (on the road), but -- looking at their schedule from here -- I can see them going 7-1 the rest of the way. With one loss to an FBS opponent, and depending upon the rest of the field, a 9-3 record might just get them an at-large bid.
