Louisville has an endowment of over $750,000,000. Montana has about $150, 000,000...The population of the Louisville metro area exceeds the entire population of Montana....The Griz are at the right level for them. This argument to move up is simply foolish...UM is cutting its own budgets and appears to be on a downslide. Priorities....ordigger said:There once was a school in the MVC...that became independent. Then joined Conference-USA for 9 years, where after 7 consecutive bowl games they were invited to the Big East which was a major conference then. They stayed 8 years, plus last year in the American as a lame duck.
Now they are a new member of the ACC...the team?
Louisville
Took them 40 years to make the ACC, but they built their team and progressed slowly. Can a team like the Griz do something similar? More importantly are you patient enough to let it happen?

True. The move up folks are just ignorant of the cold hard facts.

You may want to do some research on Louisville. You can't compare the two schools now. The point I was making is they have grown. They were a "public municipal university" UNTIL 1969. It was not until 1970 they became a 'public state university". Two many people here have narrow vision, and can't see bigger picture. How can anybody here predict where Missoula & Montana will be in 40+ years. Example....look where Boise was in the 70s...and now. Their school school has also grown, at which time their athletic programs have also - you may recall they started as a Junior College.
When Louisville first became a state university in the early 70s their enrollment increased dramatically but funding did not. When Shumaker was president in 1995 their endowments were 183 million, within a few years he got that number over 550 million.
Now compare to their athletic program, Their football program was independent from 1974-1995, when they joined Conference USA in 1996 (notice endowments THEN). By 2005 they were in the Big East. Interesting because quality of the sports programs grew with the university and the endowment that you threw out there.
So now lets look at geography and population.....I grew up in Missoula. The "metro" area has grown dramatically in the last 20 years. If that growth sustains itself, and I believe long term it will then Missoula will become a viable population base for Montana, as Montana itself is growing. Again look at Boise.
Are you familiar with Kentucky? I've lived in that part of the world also. Louisville has always played 2nd fiddle to UK, not to mention they are within a short geography of Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee and expand it a bit more...Notre Dame, Purdue, Ohio State, etc.
Lots of competition.
Not saying we are Louisville OR Boise. What I am saying is that is proven formula of success to grow slowly. Move to something like a Sun Belt West, then to the MVC, and finally back to the Pac 36.....which it will be about 2114 when we join.
So it looks like the "simply foolish argument" is in reality sitting on your door step.

Then lets revisit this topic in 10 yrs. Right now, we aren't even close.
That being said, I'm not so sure I am in favor of population increases in Montana. I like Montana as it is now, and I like the Griz where they are now.
