Big Sky Champs (or Eastern Game Thread)

I was surprised to see the team play with so little emotion. Bottom line is that EWU "wanted" it more. They made the plays when they were needed. When they went down 10, they intensified their game. Although a shooter would be nice, a leader would be better. I think we have a lot of talented individuals, but no one like an AJ that leads the group, fires them up when needed, and settle them down when needed.

Give me a leader over a shooter any day, and I'm a happy camper.

Michael Taylor is shooting 52.4% from 3-pt range for Whitworth:

"Michael Taylor (Brewster) has made an immediate impact in his first, and only, season with the Pirates. He leads the team in scoring average (19.7 ppg - 3rd in the NWC) and also leads in assists (3.58 apg, 3rd in the NWC). Taylor is second in the NWC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.27) and leads the conference in both free throw percentage (88.4%) and three-point percentage (.524). He scored a career-high 36 points in the December 28 win over Ripon, and has tallied 30 points three other times this season. He was the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year at Eastern Washington University. After a coaching change, he transferred to the University of Montana where he was a key contributor off of the bench each of the last two seasons."

Why did he leave ayway?

I believe he wanted a chance to play baseball as well. But I am sure there is more to it than that, considering he had to have known that with Staudacher leaving he would have been the go to long-ranger.

Yes, he said he wanted to play baseball. Also, his girlfriend plays for the Whitworth, and I believe they may have gotten married. He was assured that he could play guard, and would not have to play 3. I think he may have some cousins playing for Whitworth. He could be closer to home. He would have been a nice player for UM this year, and not his 3-pt average this year. NIce kid.

You are correct, digger. While some on here want to give this team a free pass and blame it all on shooting, the real reason that they blow 15-point leads late in game, is that they play tentative, shoot tentatively, forget fundamentals, like blocking-out (allowing a shorter team like EWU to out-rebound them), and have no killer instinct. If that doesn't add up to a lack of heart, then you call it what you want. The proof is on the court.

And they couldn't hit the broadside of a barn from outside . . .

We may be creating the ultimate cult brand of B ball known to mankind. Perhaps we should have left the bigs out ... Then we would have had the excuse for this sh--y loss. Booze, drugs and sex can't cure what is going on.
Funny how some were thinking Tinks may be leaving for high flying places after our win at UCLA. Amusing how many now feel he should transfer to Mongolia. Truth is, we all will survive this fiasco :thumb: All e-griz posters checked in so we are assured of no deaths over this loss. I feel better just thinking about the bobcat season. Now that is bad!

That's right, i remember that now. Bummer.

Ummm...... you should never assume someone doesn't have any "heart" unless you know them personally.......Do you (growler) know any members of the griz basketball team? For being an old dust farter like yourself, I would expect a more realistic explanation for your reasoning.

Having no heart means you give up. The griz basketball team hasn't even come close to doing that.

Back to talking about the game.

I went to the game last night, and what I saw was a worn out team with a 70 % point gaurd (who tweaked his ankle again) that played like sh!t (team) against a EWU team who actually executed a great defensive game plan. The formula for beating the griz is becoming glaringly apparent. Double team Qvale and make us shoot it from out side......When that defensive plan works and we aren't hitting ANY outside shots, it makes for a very ugly game for the griz.

Coach Tinks has got to get something figured out to free up Selvig or Ward (our best deep and midrange threats, respectively) when Qvale gets DT'ed. As most of us know, someone has to be open when there is a double team.......roll out some high screens or something to free up some guys or it will be an early exit from the tourney.

Lets hope it happens! Go griz!

I like the way you think. There's always a solution rather than just getting down on the team and saying they suck. They don't, they had a bad game and need to learn from it.

Not a huge college basketball fan and don't follow it much, other than March Madness, but I do know we suck, which makes it that much more satisfying we found a way to fuck over the Griz. Sorry but that's funny. :D

Coverage of the game was on about page 7 of the Spokesman Review sports page on Sunday. Gonzaga had several articles on page 1. There were a number of billboards around Spokane, advertising the EWU football national championship. We saw some people wearing EWU national championship gear. There was alot of EWU national championship gear in one of the downtown sporting goods stores, and our checkout clerk was decked out in EWU NC gear (and an EWU alum). I was glad to see that the EWU championship was getting some play in the area.

The refs really did suck at times. Some horrible calls against the Griz. Qvale was getting killed everytime he got the ball in the low post. The EWU player ran over Cherry as he made his dunk (and Cherry got the foul). You could tell the coaches were very unhappy with the refs. This is from Mick Holien's blog:

"There’s no doubt as in every game there were questionable officiating situations that I work hard at not getting caught up in and refuse to speculate about here, but the gripe in most leagues is officials protecting the league’s premier player.

I am certainly not in favor of that either but the beating that post Brian Qvale has been taking just trying to establish position, let alone trying to get off a shot was at the very least questionable."

...bullsiht..bullsiht..bullsiht...
