Big Man Possibility-Austin Swift's Teammate

Big man is a BIG RECRUIT.

Caoch k seems to be working hard to fill the void that Davis leaving
creates

Here is some more on the 6'10'' recruit..

A player who turned heads this past summer was Santa Cruz (Calif.) big man, Eric Van Vliet. Soon after his high school and club teammate, Cliff Sammet, announced his college intentions, the 6-foot-10 senior center took his name off the board by verbally committing to a WAC school.

"Yes it's true that I verballed to Fresno St. on Tuesday night," said Eric.

Van Vliet said he was also considering San Diego and St. Mary's. He visited all the schools unoffically but Fresno was the only official visit.

Eric said he felt a measure of comfort from the visit.

"I kind of just went with my gut. I felt really comfortable with the coaches and the players."

Playing time and academics also played a role in his decision.

"There is a really good opportunity for me to come in right away and play because they are graduating all but one of their post players this year. That added with the amount of academic support and various majors within the buisness program really just did it for me," said Van Vliet.

Van Vliet competed in the Big Time and Best of the Summer tournaments this past summer, where he solidified his stock as a legitimate Division I big man.

For a player his size, Eric has nice mobility, nice hands, and a good touch around the basket. He does a good job of establishing post position, moves well without the ball and understands how to “sit” in the post and seal his man. Last season, he anchored the middle for the Santa Cruz County Athletic League champion Cardinals, who finished the season at 30-3.

With solid academics, Eric maintains a 3.3 grade point average and scored 1070 on the SAT.

A little info:

At 6'10", Eric Van Vliet is a solid big man prospect
West Valley Basketball I drew a tough pool assignment and struggled accordingly. However, they somehow managed to receive an automatic bid in the “Open” division. While not necessarily the best high school player on the roster, Eric Van Vliet is probably the best college prospect. In the second round against Championship Sports, Van Vliet did a good job of establishing post position. He moves well without the ball and understands how to “sit” in the post and seal his man. Unfortunately, his teammates could have delivered him the ball a lot more. When he did get the ball in the low block, Van Vliet was able to finish with power (usually a dunk).

Interesting, his teammate nust have so pull. He has a chance to play in the WAC for San Diego or St Mary's, and he willing to bypass them and come to Montana. WOW!!! This is evidence the Big Sky is on the rise!!!

I think the Key to this is for the Griz to snatch him up quick before any larger programs, start sweet talking him. It sounds like his mom like the idea of him playing w/ Austin

Cliff Sammet has verbaled to Santa Clara, I wonder if SC is taking any interest in him, if they are you would think he would end up there. Sounds like a stud though, hope we get him.

San Diego and St. Mary's aren't in the WAC, they're in the WCC. Van Vliet removed his LOI because coach Lopes resigned. We also lost James Tchana, from NYC as well. The Athletic Department down here is topsy-turvy right now. Things should stabilize out though.

Fresnodawg-Just interested to hear what your thoughts are on Van Vliet?? Was he a pretty highly touted recruit for the Dawgs this year? What have you heard about him??? THe reason I am asking all of these question is because Van Vliet never really put up huge numbers, but he started getting pretty bigtime DI looks prior to his senior year. Anyone who is 6'10" and is well put together is going to get some looks, but there was some mention that he had seriously developed and stepped up his game between his junior and senior year...

gotgame- Let's put it this way, he was one of 2 recruits we had coming in. Both reneged because of the coaching change. We needed both of them as we are losing the core of our front court, Mustafa Al-Sayyad. You guys, if you get him, are getting a good player. He is a really good post player IMO.

:o :o Must have been some dinner with the coaches. Eric Van Vliet has grown to 6'10" and 250 lbs according to rumor on the football side. I must have been mistaken but I thought he was 6' 9'' and somewhat lighter when he started his visit. Sound coaching already? :o :o

:o :o No skeptics here. If there were it would be the scale that you have to carry. But there are no skeptics and we would all like to have Eric if he was 6'6" or above. 6-8 6-9 is fine and if he is a pound over 190 that would be great too. If he is anywhere near 6'10 and 250 he is also welcome in Montana. Maybe that MSLA Cat is trying to shrink him and slip him on the wrong bus to Bozeman. I hope he had a good time visiting and hope he is around today to see that the miserable wind we had yesterday is unusual. Thanks for the Boisenberry update. It would be nice to have a 6'10" fella around for next years final four. My three point shooters always go bad along the way. :o :o

I would not be so worried about me and my Bobcats. I would be worried about the new coaching staff at Fresno State, that was hired over the week end. I would guess that they will be calling Eric Van Vliet before the signing period on Wednesday.

Van Vilet has stated unequivocally that he will NOT be returning to Fresno. It was not just a matter of the coaching staff, but the the entire athlet. dept. is in shambles.

The ONLY thing stable right now at Fresno St. is Pat Hill's football team. If we could only get more Pat Hill's around, the AD would be a greater place. We did the best thing possible by getting that asshole Scott "working the phones" Johnson out. Supposedly Cleveland is possibly going to lure Tchana back, but Van Vleit looks pretty well gone.

Fresno, I appreciate your candid comments. Can't be fun to lose Van Fleet.
If you see Jack Marcure, say Hi.

:D I would like to think so (Go Eagles). However, I think it has more to do with a coach that is a very good leader and recruiter.
