Best class acts (2) from Saturday were...

66volvo

Well-known member
1. App state fans working the tailgate areas. Everyone we met at our tailgate areas were total gentlemen and ladies. With one exception they are all SICK about moving up. "Y'all don't understand. It's all about MONEY." Their conference is made up of richy, bitchy private schools who control everything and App State can't get any good competition from most of them (we may have Idaho State but they have...Citadel???)

2. Say what you want about coach Delaney and his staff, but the decision not to run up the score on a clearly whipped App State team in the last 50 seconds inside their 10 yard line was a true touch of class. I'm sure Satterfield will remember that. So will some very humbled players. "Dude, just get us on the charter flight outta here."

Agree with the post. Met many ASU fans and they were all class acts. Love Delaney's move at the end.

This is really neither here nor there, but what reading this reminded me of was listening to a high school football game on the radio and it was 37-0 in the 2nd quarter. The leading team was back on offense just before half time and they threw a 30+ yard pass play to score and run the score up to 44-0. I didn't know anything about the teams but I was just overcome with disgust about what a low rent play call.

Glad to see that the Griz showed the right respect for an opponent they knew they had down.

There may be nothing more demoralizing in the game of football than to KNOW what the other team is going to do (run the football) and STILL be powerless to stop it. Class move by Delaney to take a knee...class move by Satterfield to NOT use his 3 timeouts.

Both are routine today and expected in a blowout game. Either would have been seriously criticised for doing the alternative.

So why is it considered "classy" for not doing the douchebag thing?

not a criticism of anybody, just a reflection of society today

Because it shows you respect your opponent and aren't a douchebag. Therefore it is a classy thing to do. :thumb:

Another class act was App. State ending the game with three time outs remaining in the game. If App. State had used their time outs the Griz would have scored just to make them look worse.

From the APP board.

As a side note, 37 to 6 is NOT running up the score in football. Look how fast EWU scored last year....remember the South Dakota State game? Keep the pedal to the metal. Failing to take a knee would not be a d-bag move as Chester wrongly implies  , but taking the knee was a "classy" move as the game was well over by then.

I'm not sure if the negation of douchebag = classy, is what Chester is implying.
Yeah, I know, different game but the same thing happened in the cats game, the last 1:20 were run off by kneeling when MU still had timeouts left, it was closer to midfield but was still the same situation basically.

I think it is what is expected of coaches in those situations, and not necessarily something above what we as fans should expect of our programs.

So kudos to Mick and Rob, they do the right thing, but it is what I expect all coaches to do.

I'm going to use 3 examples of classiness:

1. App fans. Just as they were last year in Boone, everyone I talked to was great. It cost me a TON of beer money, but every penny was worth it. Thanks to all of the great App fans that visited, especially those who talked and drank with us. Hopefully, we can do it again soon.

2. Montana fans: I'm damn proud of you. Every App fan -- and I mean every single one -- I spoke with commented on how great they were treated in Montana. Thanks for treating our guests like Montanans should.

3. The respect and admiration the players had for one another: At one point in the game, Bienemann had a clear shot at Londry-Jackson. It was a screen and L-J dumped it off a tick or two before B got to him. B hit him pretty hard, and then got up to help chase down the back who caught the screen. After the play, B and L-J sought out one another. You could just imagine the conversation as they spoke for a good 6 or 7 seconds: B: "Sorry man, got there a little late". L-J: "Nope, good clean hit, man". They patted each other on the lids and went back to their huddles. Man, that was cool to see.

I completely agree with point #2 here. I was thinking as I was leaving the stadium that we were lucky the score was not 37 - 6. Classy move. And, App has played teams that called time-out at the end of a blow-out. That's an invitation to score more & we have obliged them -- SC State playoff game a few years back in Boone. Armanti threw a hail Mary at the end for another TD after a time out that stopped the clock just in time. Anyway, glad to see that did not happen this weekend.

As to point #1, I got lost somewhere in that paragraph. While most App fans probably prefer to stay in a competitive Southern Conf. with schools that put as much emphasis on football as App does, it's just not happening today. An away game at Samford, Furman, El Citadel, Elon, or Chatty has all the excitement of a High School game. A few years ago, I knew the end was near when Sammy ran out of water in the concession area, resulting in more than one fan requiring medical attention for heat stroke (Sammy is in central Alabama -- and can be miserably hot in Sept.) So for me at least, while I would like to stay, the only two schools of similar size is GaSo & Western Car. GaSo is a worthy opponent, and Western is a train wreck due to administrative idiots. So, it's time to leave. I am confident App's administration looked long and hard at all these facts and also interpreted the interesting picture facing everyone regarding conference realignment. It was time to move up.

I will also say this. One day soon, I believe Montana's admin. will come to the same conclusion. I am almost certain App will welcome UM to the SunBelt or wherever we are then. Y'all come!

Double ditto.

And we saw some not-so-classy examples of the opposite in the 1-A games this weekend. Yes, I know the reasons -- big stats for Heisman, poll rankings, etc. -- but keeping the starters in way past the point where a game is decided sucks. And it's stupid, because a team is always one or two injuries from having to drill down into the depth chart.

Two points...
1) I am torn but agree with most of that statement re: our choice to move up. Some reasons people are not excited is that its the Sunbelt, we lose teams like Ga Southern and some are concerned about the costs (hope the revenue will be there). I hope Montana comes along sooner than later or we are able to move onward and upward to another conference sooner than later (per a previous post... My opinion is that it will not be the ACC as App State doesn't have the TV market to earn the revenue needed for the ACC but we can hope).

2) I am adding other class acts... First, the entire honor ceremony at the beginning of the game and the Navy Seals!....
and
Second, I posted in the Montana ASU game thread on egriz.com on Sunday afternoon congratulating the Griz and thanking the fans for their passion, hospitality and respect toward me and my friends during the tailgate... very cool. I then made a request for help as I left my camera case at a tailgate (with memory cards of our groups trip to Glacier Park, fishing the Blackfoot and previous NC vacations with my daughter). Within 24 hours, another Griz fan on this board and a Montana administrator had pointed me to the gentleman whose truck I left it at. He has already responded and will forward it on to me shortly. Needless to say - I wasn't confident that I would see those pictures again but several classy Montana fans helped me out and this Mountaineer is very appreciative. Best of luck to the Griz the rest of the way! I will be pulling for you, especially since we are not eligible. Hope to see you in Frisco since I live in Texas. I need a team to pull for in the National Championship game. - It's Great To Be A Mountaineer! Go APPS!

Will miss App St.in the FCS, but will continue to root for them the rest of this season and into the future as a FBS team.

I definitely will miss Ap State, much like I miss Boise State and Reno. By the way the last time we played Boise State prior to them moving up was a similar finish at Griz stadium and the Broncs have done quite well for themselves since moving up.
