SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds, baseball's home run king, was indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice Thursday and could face prison instead of the Hall of Fame for telling a federal grand jury he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs.

Bonds was indicted on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction. The possible penalties:

• Perjury: Five years in prison, three years supervised probation for each count.
• Obstruction: 10 years in prison, three years supervised probation.

Maybe Barry Bonds can argue that weightlifting, not drugs, accounted for his weird, middle-aged home-run barrage and freaky body makeover, as he has maintained.

He can argue (weakly) that squats and power cleans enabled him to hit nearly 300 home runs after his 35th birthday and added 30 pounds to his skinny frame.

He can argue (not convincingly) that bench press and shoulder shrugs enabled him to get so big that he went from a size 42 jersey to a size 52.

But how does he explain this: His head grew from size 7 1/8 to 7 3/4.

Or this: His feet grew from size 10 1/2 to size 13.

There are a lot of exercises that make your muscles bigger, but there aren't any that increase the size of your head and feet.

Anyone for a set of head presses?

A few reps of foot cleans?

If the media and government would've tried this hard to convict OJ, he would be in prison. Not out pistol whipping people and stealing their goods.

OJ might be counting on a jury of his peers.
I saw OJ play against U of Minn. Best player I've ever seen.

Not that I care for Bonds (I don't and I'd just as soon sign Bobby Bonds), but the fact remains that no CREDIBLE positive test has surfaced to date. Unless we have THAT, any conviction will be the result of the worst case of baseball railroading since the Chicago White Sox were banned for life AFTER they were acquitted in court.

They aren't indicting him for using steroids - they are indicting him for lying under oath.

Feds have BALCO records showing that they sold him the designed steroids. They have his trainers logs that show the exact dates and times that he received the injections. They have two former "friends" of Barry that will testify first hand knowledge that he used. And they have him, under oath, saying that he didn't do it.

Unless his lawyers can pull some Johnny Cochran stunt, Barry is going away.
