MSU Lands a Pair of Gridders
MSU Bobcats Bobcat Football News : 2007-07-24 : Bozeman, MT
By MSU Sports Information
Montana State shored up a pair of positions on Tuesday, when Bobcat football coach Rob Ash announced the signing of a junior college running back and a high school defensive back.
MSU landed 5-9, 185 lb junior Demetrius Crawford, a running back from Sacramento City College, and 6-1, 190 lb., defensive back Andy Werner from Hondo, Tex., High School. Each player joins the Bobcats when fall camp begins in early August.
Crawford gained 504 rushing yards at Sac City last year, averaging 4.5 yards a carry and 72.0 yards a game. He also caught four passes for 55 yards, scoring four touchdowns on the ground and one through the air. "Demetrius is a shifty, elusive back, and we like his ability to make people miss," Ash said. "He can create big plays, and is deceptively powerful. With Evin Groves' injury, we felt it was critical to find a running back to compete with the guys currently in the program, and Demetrius fits that bill."
Werner earned honorable mention all-state honors last fall at safety, and was an all-district running back in 2005, when he gained 1,562 yards on 191 carries. "Andy's a young man with great character, a great work ethic, and we feel he was overlooked down in Texas. Coach (Justin) Gaines was aware of him, and fortunately for us he was still available."
