Army hires Georgia Southern's Jeff Monken as new head coach

Army has hired Georgia Southern Coach Jeff Monken as its next head coach, athletic director Boo Corrigan told SI.com on Tuesday morning. Corrigan said that Monken agreed to a six-year deal, the terms of which are still being worked out.
A press conference to formally announce Monken's hiring will be held on Monday.
"We're thrilled to have Jeff," Corrigan said. "We had a great list of candidates and Jeff rose to the top."
Monken inherits an Army program with a 12-game losing streak to Navy, its arch-rival. He brings with him an impressive resume from Georgia Southern, which included a 26-20 upset of Florida this season in Gainesville despite his team not completing a pass.
Overall, he has a 38-16 record at Georgia Southern in four seasons, which includes three FCS semi-final appearances.
Monken is a former Navy assistant coach under Paul Johnson and runs the triple option, which has long been Army's preferred method of offense. (Monken is the cousin of Southern Miss head coach Todd Monken.)
Jeff Monken interviewed last week and conducted a second interview with Army officials on Monday. Corrigan said the details were hammered out late Monday into Tuesday morning. "He projected a vision of what the academy stands for," Corrigan said. "Toughness and team first and effort, which falls into line with West Point and what Army is."
Monken beat out a field that included Ohio State co-offensive coordinator Ed Warriner, Jets special teams coach Ben Kotwica and Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan. All three have Army ties.
"We had outstanding candidates," Corrigan said. "They did a great job. It was a difficult decision."
