I've got lots of bird hunting for you, but you will have to focus on huns and grouse and it's a little drive from Missoula. There are quite a few places where you can hunt pheasants at shooting preserves. Can't think of a specific one off the top of my head, but they are around. I would imagine for a small price you could smoke some ring necks. Shoot me a pm is you want more information.

Are the huns making a comeback? I haven't seen many in the past 20 years. They used to be all over.

Attila is dead, but Constantinople is under constant threat of attack.

Well played AZ!

BTW, speaking of the Turks, I spotted a suspicious Ottoman in my neighbor's living room last weekend.

Well according to 420 they're making a comeback and are all over Central Montana so that wouldn't surprise me. Hope you can get a leg up on it. 8-)

I lived there for a couple years. When I was 7-8.

They're all over the place in central montana..

Not much meat, but great for tying soft-hackles.

If the game is on August 31, you will want to plan your week out here after the game not prior to. That is because most of the upland bird season's that will be available that time of year will begin on September 1st. That is usually true for the Grouse and Fall Turkey seasons as well as, (for what its worth), the Mourning Dove season. Pheasant, Duck and Goose seasons usually open later, toward the end of September so you might miss those altogether. There are several opportunities for both great turkey and grouse hunting within a 75 mile radius, (roughly 1 to 1.5 hrs) of Missoula in almost every direction.

As for fishing there is no end to the possibilities from Bass to Walleye! From Missoula you are within 15 minutes of three rivers all known for producing trophy browns, cutthroats, rainbows and some bass. Be careful though because there are also native bull trout in the area and they are illegal to harvest. If you prefer lakes there are several choices within an hour of Missoula, even more within 1.5 hours. On most of these you can do very well from shore.

Both the Bitterroot and the Seeley/Swan drainages are filled with rental cabins and small motels that you can book. I don't have any recommendations for guides because I've never found the need to use one. But you can get a wealth of information at the MT Fish Wildlife and Parks website at "www.mt.gov". Just go to the right side of the site and click on State Agencies, then scroll down to Fish Wildlife and Parks and you will find whatever you might need. They have a link to apply for your licenses on line, so you can take care of that before you get here.

Regardless of what you decide to do, you most certainly will have a great time out here. Be sure to take some good Missoula Brew with you! Once again, there is no end to the possibilities.

Where I grew up they never really died down, if you know where to look there are always some to be found...some years are better than others...the sharptail numbers suck compared to what they used to be though.

Hey guys,
Thanks for that info. I did take a look at the hunting seasons before I posted just to get an idea. By upland hunting I did mean quail, chukar or partridge, etc.. I was dissapointed to see that pheasants wouldnt be in season, but thats ok. I will be making another trip (who knows when) to do some big game hunting so I can go after some ringnecks then too. I am excited about this trip even though its a long ways off. The game should be awesome too. I have wanted to see a game in yalls stadium since that 2000 semifinal up there. Any who, I will be in touch. Thanks again guys
