Any Rumors of Signees for Next Week

I'm on board with your thoughts on Emerson. I wonder if we don't give his a scholly, if someone else (Evans/ISU?) might.

I pondered that myself but I think the transfer rule applies to walk-ons too. Having red-shirted this year means he would lose a year of playing time if he transfered to a another D1 school. I would think that is not the best option. If we stiff him, I would think he would go to a JC for a year or two and try to get back to this level. That is if he wants to play with the big boys.

Good point. He probably does not want to sit another year. He has really impressed me in scrums and the few practices I've seen. I hope he gets his opportunity right here at UM.

It appears to me from looking at the recruiting tea leaves the Griz looking hard at the JC ranks this spring. They seem to be looking at forwards both wing and post forwards. Edrico McGregor is a strong possibility but I hear Texas San Antonio is making a strong move for his services. I have seen some activity for landing a JC point but most of their attention seem to be targeted towards the front court. High school wise there has been some activity looking at small forwards types but not a lot. I really expect them to sign a JC who can play the small forward spot and also swing to the power forward at times.

On another note: Wiley has the talent to be a great Big Sky player.

Welcome back. I thought maybe you died! :D

Agreed, welcome back Mslacat.

I checked your blog and didn't see any recent news. Thought: Could you give us your impressions regarding:

1. Where the Bobcat men's basketball team has had its problems lately. Is this a problem with assistants, recruiting, or just plain bad luck.

2. Likewise, where have the Lady griz had their problems lately? Is this a problem with assistants, recruiting, or just plain bad luck.

3. Have you heard anything about the Idaho State men's program? Has he put together a staff? It will be interesting to see where his assistants are from.

Thanks for your insights.

not for this year but next...

hope Tinks et al have been looking at Glacier junior post Edwards... 6-11 and big body, on GF Trib super state or whatever they call it

Based on what I seen during GRIZ team camp last summer. This kid has a LONG way to go. The only thing I seen was a big body, with solid hands. Beyond that, at best, a huge project player. Then again, players change a lot as they get older. The potential is there though.

If he does not get more of an attitude, he will get eaten alive in Div 1 ball, even in the Bigsky conference. He can dominate at the Montana High School level on size alone. He needs some serious balling against better competition with AAU ball. If I were him, I would do everything I could to find a good regional AAU team to be part of. Providing the finances are there. I have no idea about his family.

Was reading online....and Nerlens Noel is going to "shock the world"...does that mean he's a Griz???

The Griz will have Marko Kovacevic a 6-11 post from Western Nebraska JC in on April 16th for a visit. Marko originally committed to Creighton University but has decided to re-open his recruitment. Not a lot of programs know he is available but he is becoming a hot commodity this spring, Right now it appears his top two are Montana and Steven F Austin (who he will visit right after he leaves Missoula on the 18th). Marco averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds this past season

Hard to judge a lot on that video. The positives, he moves okay, and a solid touch from the FT line, for a big guy. The biggest negative, absolutely terrible timing with his rebounding and going to get the ball. Yet, defensively, he seems to have good timing. Pretty unusual combination there. He needs to get a lot stronger too.

Maybe we can find some better video on him. If Creighton liked him, he has to be a pretty solid prospect. Creighton is good program.

I saw that video as well but my immediate thought was that it was old and that maybe it was him playin over seas in highschool. the unis look funny and that is the type of ball they use over there.

either way looks pretty solid for what we need.

I think would be a good get. We need a big to keep the paint shut down and get some rebounds. I'd be ok with this guy.

I showed the video to this guy that I work with who is Serbian and he said it was definitely a Serbian gym. He said that they basically build them all the same and they all have those types of windows.

I still have not heard anything about signings. I assume they have a commitment by now from someone but may be waiting for another important one to announce at the same time. Who knows?

Mslacat's sources and reports have been pretty accurate. I am confused by this one though -

The reason for my confusion is this correction that appears on Mslacat's site - #Correction 6-11 Marko Kovacevic of Western Neb JC is scheduled to visit @msubobcats yesterday and today & not @UMWMensBBallTweeted2 hours ago

I don't know who is correct. Mslacat can you clarify this for us. Thanks.

I heard from Brett Swanson today from Jucojunction and he told me that he was in error and Marko was visiting Montana State and not Montana. It is really strange about Montana recruiting I have heard the names ov about 5-6 JC small forward and power forwards that the Griz are said to be interested in but no real strong possibles at this point. Even Edrico McGregor of North Idaho seems to be out of the picture (Texas San Antonio leads with Bobcats second). I am pretty confident that the Griz are looking for a small forward and an athletic Post player, but no real strong candidates.

Freddy Owens was showing a kid around that was not the Marko guy.........This kid was tall. I did see an unfamiliar face when the bball team was introduced at the scrimmage on Saturday......Anyone know who he is??

Huh... seems strange with recent success and the perceived playing time available. Not to mention tinkles recruiting prowess. I trust we will find what we need to compliment what we have, but the relative silence is killin me.

I'd rather just hold the schollies than make any "panic buys". If there's nothing out there that works, there's nothing out there that works. I wouldn't necessarily say that's a knock on us if we can't sign someone that falls into what we're looking for. We've recruited a few jucos now that have not panned out (I realize that's the nature of the game in recruiting, too).

That being said, I would love a James Ennis type player to come in next year. Long, freaky athlete taller than 6'6". It would elevate our team next year, no question.

Also, a few more Zags rumored to be transferring: Monninghoff and Chris Sarbaugh (who may or may not be D1 material, but I can see him contributing in Big Sky). After all the transfers from the Zags in the past 10 years, still amazed we haven't plucked one from them. Monninghoff would be awesome.
