My bet is he stays in Miami, and is given a chance in Philbins "West Coast" style offense. The fullback is an important piece in that style of offense. Sounds like Lex is going to be out at Miami. I hear the Dolphins are signing Jerome Messam from the CFL/Graceland University to be their short yardage back. I hope I am wrong, but it sounds like a done deal.

Miami Dolphins: Canada's Top Running Back Is Likely Headed to South Beach

There's no question that talent in the Canadian Football League is non-comparable to the likes of the National Football League, but the CFL's top running back appears to be on the verge of signing with the Miami Dolphins.

Jerome Messam of the Edmonton Eskimos was voted the CFL's best Canadian player this past season and will reportedly be taking his talents to South Beach to test the waters at the NFL level. However, a report came out late Sunday morning that Messam is still "mulling over" Miami's proposal.

The 26-year-old Messam grew up in Ontario and attended Graceland University, but did not enter the NFL Draft, instead, Messam went undrafted in the 2008 CFL Draft.

Messam spent his first season with the BC Lions, receiving limited playing time, but he was then traded to Edmonton, where he ran for an incredible 1,057 yards and six touchdowns on 195 carries this past season.

Messam stands at 6'3" and weighs a whopping 245 lbs, which makes him an ideal inside power runner at the NFL level—he would certainly complement Reggie Bush's elusiveness to the outside.

The major concern with Messam is his character, as he's had some off-the-field issues and even cracked his own teammate's jaw. However, if Messam's talent can be utilized with the Miami Dolphins, then he'll be one remarkable signing.

..I spend a lot of time on the Phin blogs. Most of the posters on their sites think Lex is a goner. This may actually be a good thing as we as bloggers have been known to be wrong about just about everything when it comes to roster choices...Nobody knows if Messam can catch the ball, or how he will do in pass protection. These are 2 areas in which Lex excells. Many an NFL prospects never see the field if they can't get the protections..Throw in Lex' special teams contribution, and I can't just see the Phins cutting ties with Lex.

To be eligible for an NFL pension you need to play for four years. I think the league tends to let players go before they become vested. I've read where the average player in the NFL makes it for only 3.5 years. That's probably not an accident. In any case, wouldn't this be Lex's fourth season? Just sayin I won’t be surprised if Miami or really any team doesn't sign him. I hope I'm wrong.

Important point, especially since one poster seemed to suggest that Lex shouldn't be playing anywhere (?) I think of Lex as a damn good player, with a great ethic, who has shown lots of potential, but just seems to have the dumbest luck moving up the depth chart. I wish Sparano had just shown complete faith in Lex and given him a real shot, instead of this pattern of dangling a role in front of Lex, Lex stepping-up and making the most of it, then bringing in yet another running back, including seriously fading stars.

While I like the Dolphins being Griz South (fewer teams to pay passing attention to), it would be good for Lex to move-on to a team that would be glad to have him. Any ideas?

Pittsburg?? Not a Steelers fan but isn't Mendenhall out for the upcoming season with an ACL or something? May be a good place for him? Just throwing that out there. :?:

I don't think this surprises Lex at all. He has always been in a position where he has had to compete for a roster spot. Teams are also always going to sign new players to compete for spots, even spots with established veterans on them. Lex will have to beat this guy out, like he has others.

..I think Miami is the perfect spot for Lex to remain..Sparano is gone. GM Ireland loves Hilliard. Ans as I mentioned above. I think Philbins scheme will be the perfect fit for Lex...Not a role where he is the primary, even secondary ball carrier. But fullback. Used like Kuhn is used in Green Bay..3rd down, short yardage, Redzone guy..Lex could be quite affective in this role.

I firmly believe Lex is done at Miami but he certainly should play a significant role for another team that needs a power back. I will be surprised if he doesn't land somewhere soon. We're pulling for you, Lex. :thumb:

Jeff Fisher knows all about the Griz work ethic and the athletes that are turned out here. I can see him in St. Louis...with Chase. Maybe Atlanta with their Montana connection.
