Akey fired as Idaho's football coach

Idaho football coach Robb Akey has been fired, the school announced Sunday afternoon.

“The President (Duane Nellis) and I believe it is important to make this move now so we can immediately begin the process of hiring a new coach for the 2013 season,” Athletic Director Rob Spear said in a statement. “We appreciate Coach Akey’s enthusiasm and dedication to the University of Idaho but this is the right move at this time.”

Akey was 20-50 in five-plus seasons with the Vandals. Idaho is 1-7 this season after Saturday's 70-28 loss at Louisiana Tech. Akey led the Vandals to a victory in the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, just the second bowl win in program history. It was Idaho's only winning season under Akey.

Offensive coordinator Jason Gesser will serve as interim coach.

Spear said a search for Akey’s replacement will begin immediately.

Akey’s contract, which expires in December 2014, has a base salary of $165,796. The school must pay Akey his base salary until the end of the contract or it must pay the difference between the base salary and Akey's new salary if he is hired elsewhere.

He was scheduled to earn an additional $210,000 for media programs and public appearances from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.

Idaho will play the 2013 season as a Football Bowl Subdivision independent. The Vandals announced their schedule on Friday. The WAC, the Vandals' current league, will not sponsor football in 2013.

Gesser, a former Washington State quarterback, is in his second season as a college football assistant coach, both with Idaho.

If anyone is an ESPN Insider (I'm not) there appears to be a rumor that Idaho is interested in Bobby Petrino. Would have to get the full article to see if there's anything behind it.

That could change the game in Moscow. Forget the BSC if they pull that off. And keep him away from the bimbos.... Erickson, why not Petrino?

UPDATE: Two more name surfaced as potential candidates for Idaho to eventually replace dismissed head coach Rob Akey.

"You may hear Arkansas offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Paul Petrino's name as an eventual replacement for Akey, but Idaho's status as an independent moving forward could hurt their chances of landing a coach such as Petrino," Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com wrote. "One coach that may have interest in the job will be UTEP offensive coordinator/quarterbacks/kickers coach Aaron Price."

Both Petrino and Price have extensive roots in the Northwest. Petrino is a Butte, Montana native and coached three seasons at Idaho from 1992-'94. Price has a long history in the Moscow-Pullman area having played and coached at Washington State under his father Mike Price. Both are talented offensive minds that should be able to jump start an Idaho offense that is currently ranked 107th in the nation if they are given the opportunity to take over the program.

UPDATE: Another interesting name is starting to make the rounds in conjunction with the Idaho vacancy. Matt Hayes of the Sporting News suggested former Colorado and Boise State head coach Dan Hawkins.

Hawkins' tenure at Colorado was certainly one to forget, but he had great success as Boise State's head coach. It's simply a matter of whether Coach Hawkins would be interested in returning to the sidelines or not.

Rumor Central normally discusses hot seats for coaches during the season. Rob Akey no longer has a seat in Idaho. Akey was dismissed as the Vandals' head football coach after the team's 70-28 loss to Louisiana Tech according to Josh Wright of the of the Spokesman-Review.

Jason Gesser was named the team's interim head coach, and the former offensive coordinator will have a four-week interview to obtain the position full time.

Otherwise, Idaho will have plenty of uncertainty around the program this winter. The team will become an independent after WAC football folds. The schedule is already set, but it's an odd transition for a program that isn't necessarily prepared for independence.

The position won't entice top coaching candidates, but two early possibilities are currently coaching for Washington and may be interested due to their ties as alumni of Idaho. Joel Thomas is the Huskies' associate head coach on offense and spent the past four seasons coaching running backs. Dan Cozzetto is Washington's run game coordinator and a 30-year coaching veteran with stops at Arizona State, Oregon State, San Francisco and Idaho.

The team could dip in the FCS ranks for a successful head coach at that level. The Vandals may attempt to lure Eastern Washington's Beau Baldwin to Moscow or try to pry Marshall Sperbeck away from Sacramento State.

Blaine Bennett is the head coach of the Division II Central Washington Wildcats. Bennett has been relatively successful during his tenure with the Wildcats. He also played and coached previously for Idaho.

There is a 1,000% better chance of Baldwin ending up in Missoula than in Mos-cow.

Thanks. I had the wrong Petrino. Article provides good coverage. Interesting mix of names, old and new. Baldwin would be a good move; EWU would probably move quickly to land Bennett. Hawkins is probably hungry for a job, if UI could stomach the BSU blood lines. Maybe some names that should be on the Montana list.

Great!... I can now use the same argument used B.E. (Before Engstrom) when I was telling the kool-aid crowd why UM going FBS would never suffer Idaho's fate. Sadly that was then...this is now.
Anyway, the Vandals problems in no particular order are (1 play in a 16,000 seat quonset hut (2 no winning tradition like we used to have (3 fewer than 3,500 season tickets (4 no fan support - see #3
(4 remote location on 2 lane highway, and (4 have competition from a so-so PAC -12 school 9 miles away.

Well, we still have more seating capacity, I-90 and no PAC-12 school has surfaced in Lolo...
