A special column from Kyle Sample - "A Griz fan’s pain: Fear and Loathing in Bozeman"

@Colter_Nuanez56 - In reference to Utah Tech being a D2 school 20 years ago. NDSU, SDSU, USD, and UND were D2 schools 15 years ago.
SDSU was not a D2 school 15 years ago. Hell, 2009 was 16 years ago and that was one of the epic playoff games. UND went FCS in 2008 along with South Dakota. SDSU became FCS in 2004, the same year as NDSU

Yup along with a lot of the Big 10 and even the SEC recruits the top programs in Arizona like Chandler and Hamilton. There has to be something for only being a 2-3 hour drive where your family can easily make every home game instead of traveling across the country that NAU can use to their advantage.
I agree. As a Griz fan, I would get rid of the dome and build a beautiful outdoor stadium with a beautiful view of the mountains to the north.

I stand corrected. It was 15-20 some years ago. My point still stands. Utah Tech and the Dakota Schools were D2 schools about the same time.

Schmidt and Colter are preaching the truth. As Griz, we can either rest on our laurels or embrace the reality and DEMAND the necessary changes are made. Somebody somewhere in the UM administration/athletics office better be having serious hard and difficult conversations and put the wood on the table just like Bobby would've done in 2004-2009 - either make the necessary changes and outwork everybody or move on.

FWIW, if Matt Campbell uses the 3-3-5 at Penn State, they will get demolished by the likes of Iowa, Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, and Minnesota.

Your talk about playing pickup basketball with DL and TE dudes reminded me of the summers I played pickup basketball with Matt Birk and other Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman. Matt Birk, a former Harvard standout and Pro Bowl center for the Minnesota Vikings and Baltimore Ravens, would be the point guard and the dude would ball out. NFL athletes are freak athletes.

I agree as a Griz fan on the outdoor stadium but from the perspective of a high school player, particularly kicker, punter or snapper a domed stadium at elevation would sound perfect. I assume other positions as well to a lesser extent.

I used to play basketball with offensive lineman Dan Skipper. I would not be surprised if he averaged more fouls than points but that is not because he is not a freak athlete but because he was playing football as an offensive lineman out there on the basketball court.

I get your point and agree there's a benefit to a dome, especially in the colder months.

I'm not sure if the dome has changed much since I was last there in the mid to late 1990s but the dome at that time had not atmosphere or character. It felt like a Soviet style gymnasium.

The NAU campus is beautiful and is set in a good location within Flagstaff. IMHO, if they had an outdoor stadium, it would add to the college and football experience at NAU. I wonder if Jerome Souers ever tried to get the NAU administration to build an outdoor stadium.

I doubt Jerome Souers ever pushed for an outdoor stadium at NAU. He publicly supported improvements to the Skydome. He commented that playing in their dome offered athletes a safer and more rewarding football experience than playing in outdoor stadiums.

And now he's coaching at Northern in their outdoor stadium in one of the coldest locations in the U.S.
An outdoor stadium could be a hinderance in recruiting players from Phoenix. The locals hate the “cold” weather. I’ve been out when it was 60 and sunny wearing shorts and a t shirt. People who live in Phoenix year round were wearing winter coats and made comments about how I must not be from there because it was so cold out to them.
