A Griz Fan's Perspective: Casey Durham

Let me preface my comments by saying that I'm not a closet cat fan and by no means a sympathizer for the blue and gold. I also don't have any relationship with Mick Durham or his family, but am a high school basketball coach and love the game............and I thought I would share my opinions. I would post this on bobcat nation as well, but they won't let me on their site for whatever reason.....so here it is......

Being a coach's son is no picnic and I don't think anybody would expect anything different, the heck you take is part of the game. Watching Casey in high school, I would have told you he MAY be a good Frontier player, maybe. He's not a point guard who will create shots for others and his shot selection is suspect (as it is for other bobcats on the squad). He's probably in the lower half as far as point guards go in the Big Sky.

But here's the deal Cat Fans, here's one person that thinks you are damn lucky to have him and the crap he gets from his own fans is ridiculous (I would expect it from Griz fans). He IS the best point guard you have. He is a pest on defense and he gets the ball where it needs to be. While your true freshman (Wilson) looks like he will be a nice player someday, it is night and day when he's in. There are some on Bobcatnation that suggest that Edmonds or Jefferson become the point guard. That is insane. If you did that you would make your team worse off in two positions. Neither is a true point guard and you take both from their natural positions. Edmonds is a shooter.....period. And Jefferson is a true two guard who would feel like a three dollar bill playing point guard.

And the biggest reason of all........he's free! He isn't taking anybody's spot on the potential roster. You have a Montana kid who has bettered himself immensely, probably works as hard as anybody and he's constantly belittled. Another thing he has is courage. Prime example: He missed a three tonight in the 2nd half and it came right back at him.......he stepped right up and buried the next one. And throughout the season, I don't think you can disagree he has made some big plays late in games. He has more courage than Moss who constantly settles for jumpshots and Dissly who is probably the biggest bust since Tony Mandarich. For those that want Dissly to play football, he wouldn't last a week. There's more to football and basketball than pure athletic ability and his lack of toughness is scary. I projected him as one of the all time greats and he has been a bust, plain and simple. He should be attacking the rim non stop and all he does is shoot threes in transition. If you want to get on somebody, he's your man Bobcats. Not Durham........who is exactly what is good about college sports...somebody overachieving and realizing his dream. Now, I don't really care if you recognize the positives of Casey Durham as I'm a Griz fan and like where were at. But if the situation were reversed and Griz fans were constantly ripping this kid on our team, I'd be embarrased. You are wasting your time on the wrong guy.........

thanks loyal. i go by a different name over on the nation but if anyone wanted to, they could figure me out. this is what i've been saying all along. case is my guy! he's not gonna lead the nation in anything. but he'll bust his ass every minute of every game. he knows the big sky, and he knows cat - griz. he plays smart 90% of the time. but based on some of our shot selection, that may still be better than most. casey is doing what he can, and for whatever reason, for some, that's not enough. in my opinion, as of this far, the entire cat team has underachieved. yet, after every loss, or close win, most of what you hear is negative remarks mainly about casey and mick. it's almost funny. case in point. after a missed free throw, marvin actually shows a little hustle and gets an offensive board. cats down 10 with just under 4 to go. he gives it to ja'ron. ja'ron decides to run to the sideline, and take a falling three with probably 33 on the shot clock. he misses. yet no mention from the nation about that, or his other poor choices, or marvins questionable shots. let me just say that if that was casey, it'd be about a 50 post thread over there why he doesn't belong, and his dad sucks! anyway, you guys played very well again, and after every game i'm more convinced that strait is big sky mvp. despite foul trouble, he still was a big factor. i just hope that we meet again, and the cats finally get ya, like you did us lat year. again, thanks for the kind words for casey, and best of luck to ya until ya meet us in the tourney! :thumb:

I agree about Casey. He is from the mold of his Father. I don't know him but I am sure he is a great young man.
Last night Mick drove me crazy because he kept refering to him as Carson. I couldn't imagine who he was talking about at first until he finally said Carson Durham.
Comeon Mick! Get it right.

He is a cocky little point, but damn, he does work his ass off; much the same as Kevin. If you love basketball you love the hustlers and those two epitomize that quality. Last night it rubbed off on Matt Martin also. Great to see him play the quality ball we knew he had in him. The Jacks have yet to visit Montana; that trip will not be easy and the afore mentioned players will be the reason. Not to mention the depth of the Griz will be a determining factor when they arrive here after facing the Cats in Bozeman.

Thanks for clearing that up. When he said Durr, I took it for Durham. My error,. and my apologies to Mick.
I don't know the names of the Cat players, except for Casey and wasn't aware that there was a Cat with the name of Carson.

Since I haven't seen the Cats play in years can I take it that Casey Durham is the white version of former Kentucky player Saul Smith?

:agree2:

Dissly is dismal and has lost his mojo completely. No confidence and should be benched... period. Casey deserves to play, and the team is better when he does take point.

On a different note, if asked, Casey would also relinquish the point to another if it was for the best of the team.

I saw Mick play in HS and in College. He was one hell of a BB player. As for Casey, I think he is a classic overacheiver. He gets a lot done because he has desire and heart. Casey is what many woul dcall a student of the game. If his teammates played with the same passion and desire as Casey, that team would have a handful of losses instead of double digits. Some call him cocky, well show me a player worth his salts that isn't a little cocky. Nick Dissly has all the physical ability in the world. I wonder if people telling him how good he is for so long has gone to his head or something. One can only imagine how good he could be. I read somewhere someone campared him to former cat Jeff Epperley. That might be a pretty good comparison.

As for the game, I thought Beye was pretty good especially compared to the first meeting. The backup named Morris did a real nice job in limited minutes.

The thing that really surprised me was the run the Griz made and no time out from Durham. The Griz were feeling it and the crowd was into it. I really was shocked Mick decided to wait for a media TO.

The cats are good enough to beat NAU at home. We could help each other out down the stretch.

Casey is not the greatest point guard out there, but he does a good job. He was thrown into that position when our two other point guards left and he's been an adequate replacement. Casey does work his ass off, and there's no doubt in my mind he has earned his way onto the court. I'm a Casey guy, but that being said he is one of my friends. I'm glad he's a Bobcat.

This is for Loyalgriz: I'm not sure why you couldn't post on BobcatNation. Your opinions are good ones. If you want me to post that opinion, I can do that.

That would be fine with me. Like I said, I just feel people need to stand up for a Montana kid working his butt off.............regardless of where he goes to school.

I agree that Casey Durham had very nice game on Saturday as far as hustle, intensity.and of course three point shooting. And I might add that it's very important for the Griz that the Cats run the table as it would be their best chance for chance for UofM to host in case of a tie with Northern Arizona. If the Cats get third place, UofM would have the tiebreaker with a regular season sweep. Of course there's this other small matter of defeating EWU with the Stuckey factor could a barrier to any Montana hosting.

Like to see Dissly give football a try. Played against him in highschool and he was an excellent WR. He had full rides to UWash, WashSt, CoSt, among others. Lots of potential.

Dissly isn't physical enough for football. He was constantly injured in HS and wouldn't last a day in D-I ball. He was good in HS because he was huge and fast by Montana standards and could get by with just physical abilities in AA. College football would actually require skill and toughness on his part and that he is lacking.
