A Cautionary Tale

Ask anybody how much it would take to make them feel comfortable financially, and they always say, "Twice as much." No matter how much they already have, it's always, "Twice as much." It's just human nature.

Agreed. But sometimes you have to question the dominant paradigm. There are two ways to wealth. One is to have more. The other is to want less.

While we shouldn’t be complacent, we should definitely appreciate what we have.

Great post

Great post

And sooooo 1950's.

Interesting discussion. I found myself agreeing with each post in the thread. I didn't see the game.

I tend to share some of citay's concerns, and agree that the Cats are not a strong team. That doesn't mean that beating them on the road with Falls coming off what seemed to be a bad injury, wasn't a very good win. I also wonder about the strength of the top teams in the conference this year. Are they weaker than usual?

The positives are that this year's UM team is deep, doesn't seem to be having bad games, doesn't seem to be having long periods of let-downs, doesn't seem to get rattled much if at all, is unselfish, and just keeps playing. No one is falling apart in games, a bunch of guys are stepping up to score and play well in games. And the defense and coaching, which are obviously big.

I am starting to think the team may be better and going somewhere, because within the many parts, a very strong group seems to emerge and gel every game. The veterans, including Samuelson, are leading the way, but the younger guys are huge contributors in every game. They are playing with lots of confidence. Their on-court demeanor and support for each other, and public comments, indicate that they truly believe in and like each other.

My wife thinks the guys waiting to get in uniform could become dancers if basketball doesn't work out for them.

Great post. I would say overall this is a "down" year for the BSC...fortunately for the Griz.

I think Egun is the best dancer by far. I still think he is going to be a huge contributor in coming years. . I am really looking forward to Griz having a "big presence" with Steadman next year. I don't know much about Henderson but he has a big and athletic frame. But I think Gaskins is going to be a really special (from scrimmage and high school footage). Add the two stud guards coming out of California and the Aussies and there is no doubt the future is incredibly bright.

Gonna be a real battle for PT next year.

+1 I constantly remind my daughter (who makes WAY more money than I ever dreamed of making) that she needs to be grateful for what she has -- and not be concerned with what she doesn't. I feel the same way about the Griz -- they are in first place. Let's be happy.

I keep hearing people say this, and I can't quite figure out where its coming from.

I think the top of the league isn't as strong as it was last year, but I'd argue that's mainly because Montana struggled so much in their non-conference schedule.

The BSC finished last season at 24 in the conference RPI standings. This year, depending on where you look, the BSC is rated somewhere between 16th and 18th. The BSC's non-conference record is quite a bit better than it was last year. If you look at individual team RPI's or BPI's, there are more BSC teams in the top 150 and top 200 than last year.

Obviously, these ratings are relative to the field this year, not a direct comparison to last year, so who knows how this year's conference would stack up to last years conference. Statistically speaking at least, the BSC is markedly better this year. The number of competitive games this season is evidence of more parity in the league.

Northern Colorado is statistically the best team in the league by a pretty wide margin, with the Griz only recently sneaking into second place behind them after sweeping EWU. I've seen UNC projected as high as 14 if the tournament teams were selected now based on RPI, etc. I think the weakness of the BSC last year was a major factor in the Griz getting the 15 seed despite back-to-back conference and tournament championships and a 24 win season.

This weeks road trip is going to be a tough one, but I think will tell us a lot about this teams ability to make another tournament appearance. If they can at least split the games this week, it sets up a huge matchup against Northern Colorado, with a possibility of clenching the conference title at home. Northern Colorado's final four games set them up well to sneak ahead of the Griz if the Griz don't take care of business this week.
