A Bright Spot In The RPI

Something of note on the Sagarin Daily RPI. UCLA has finally broken into the top 50 on that RPI. This is significant in that they also post next to each team how they have done against an opponent in the top 25 and the top 50. The Griz now have 1-0 stat in the top 50 column! Trying to find some bright spots after this past week to lift me out my sports depression. :) I hate the RPI for how it is skewed towards the Eastern team, so any positive that can be found for our Griz is a good thing. :thumb:

Not sure how the RPI slants towards the east coast but oh well.

As an ESPN magazine subscriber I have access to their Daily RPI rankings and the UCLA win has been top 50 for quite a while according to their rankings. Two wins last weekend could've helped the Griz RPI but according to ESPN they sit around 110.

If we make the tournament that top 50 win and maybe top 25 win if UCLA continues to play well will help our seed greatly.

The RPI slants heavily toward the "major" or "power" conferences (think BCS), of which there is only one (the Pac 10) in the west. I presume that's what SeaGriz was referring to, and if so, he's 100% accurate.

That's exactly what I meant. Thanks EverettGriz!

And the Sagarin RPI was the only one that I saw that broke down the top 25 and top 50 distinction. I know the Realtimerpi.com has had UCLA in the top 50 for some time now(currently #39). Does anyone know what differences they use in calculating because they are definitely different.

I absolutely agree that teams east of the Mississippi in the BCS conferences have the opportunity to earn a better RPI ranking, especially this year with the down year on the west coast, there just aren't that many teams who have beaten teams in the eastern half of the country when they've had a chance this year.

Regarding Sagarin's rankings, I'm not sure how his formula produces his rating but he does account for margin of victory in the "Pure Points/Predictor" factor of his formula. RPI only deals with win loss records, which is definitely a potential flaw in the formula. At first glance it seems that the rankings are fairly similar, but do have differences such as UCLA. The committee uses RPI and that's why we here it talked about.

Speaking of RPI, Idaho is trying to help the Montana's RPI right now, up on Utah State at the half by 3.

Yep, Idaho did help. Beat #17 UT State. The announcers had it right, though, in that it's not that impressive since UT State hasn't beaten anyone of note this year, though they did beat our bracket buster opponent earlier in the year. That was their "best" win.
