Growing pains aside, do you have any anxiety about the LB Corps this season?
Going into spring camp, yes, of course. The combined 0 starts at LB for all of these guys. The injury concerns with Kose & Lebsock. And the overall depth, these group of 5 or 6 guys will all get used because they'll be needed to play LB and special teams. This group is fairly light overall, could be one of the smallest/lightest LB corps we've had on this team in quite some time. I don't necessarily see that "hitter/enforcer" in this group, maybe Kose if he can stay healthy.
Ever the optimist I can look at it on the other side too. Van Ackeren, Lebsock, and Gamboa were all special teams studs last season. I went back and looked at their numbers and all had more tackles than I expected, 29, 23, and 14 and each one grabbed a fumble recovery. I think Van Ackeren won ST player of the year last year in fact. A lot of times we see special teams studs transition into great starters. Adam Boomer was a great example of that. Schye and Strahm looked to have great raw potential, remember Strahm was the player of the year in Oregon, the same award Jordan Johnson got I believe. Schye looked to me like a guy that was on the brink of playing as a true frosh for backup and ST duty. I think the potential is there I just need to see it as the starters. Also I think anyone who watched Kose play in fall camp recognized he could probably have been starting on half of the teams in the Big Sky... he was just backing up Brock Coyle, so starting wasn't happening.
