Craig Bohl, whose NoDak State Bison won the FCS playoffs, is earning his contract max of $348,768 this year but he doesn't make as much as UND's hockey coach.

Bohl's pay includes 3% of the gross home tix sales during the regular season -- worth more than $40,000.
Craig Bohl, North Dakota State Head football coach

Contract base salary: $196,668 (also guaranteed $75,000 with media fee, speaking and camp)

Bohl’s incentives:
National title: $15,000
Conference title: $10,000
National runner-up: $10,000
Playoff host: $5,000 each (3 games)
3% ticket sales: $42,100

Bakken oil boom aside we pay our coach 1/2 of what NoDak does? I know there are bonuses included in that figure but WHEN will we graduate our coaches compensation rates beyond 1980's levels?

Has nothing to do with the Bakken. Both UND and NDSU have been paying their coaches top wages in their respective fields for sometime now... when it comes to men's college hockey and FCS anyway.

All it takes to graduate our coaches compenstion rates is for you to crack open your check book and foot the bill.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say if the state wasn't raking in cash from the oil fields there isn't a chance that people wouldn't be pissed about these numbers. It's not like their state is cutting funding to the colleges right now.

I thought I heard somewhere that Pflugrad's base salary was $155,000? If that's correct, I don't think it's really that much less than Bohl's base salary considering how long Bohl has been with NDSU. Does UofM offer incentives as well?

UM does offer a media package as well and incentives for national title, playoffs, conference title, etc, but I think they are significantly smaller than the package NDSU is paying out. I'm with the camp that believes UM coaches (and those at Montana State as well for that matter) are grossly underpaid. And I'm not sure about the regulations, if any, that may limit the ability for groups like a Quarterback Club, for example, to supplement those salaries.

I see. Yeah, I was just curious. I guess I would've assumed that UofM would be paying their coaches more than NDSU, especially with how new NDSU is to the FCS and how successful UofM generally is in the FCS.

The gem in Bohl's contract is the 3% of gross ticket sales. That sort of option at UM would probably put another 100k or so into the compensation package. There's a perception problem in Montana as well, the Board of Regents (and many Montana taxpayers as well) don't want to see State employees (head coaches) making what could be perceived as an excessive amount of money, in short way more than college presidents, the governor, etc.

Hard to imagine that um would use ticket sales as a revenue source for paying coaches. doesn't the university use revenue from athletics(ticket sales, rent, merchandise) to pay for some academic programs? not smack, i just don't know. just in case 62 griz's prostate is acting up. :D

I would rather see the salaries of assistant coaches increased 25 percent. And the base salary of the head coach increased to $200k.
This shouldn't be about squeezing boosters for pay raises. Montana's athletic department is $1 million in the black because of football, though not even that amount tells the whole story. For more than a decade, UM has committed $1 million year less to athletics than its conjoined twin Bozeman does. Somewhere in there, a pay raise should be feasible. Not only that, but after more than a decade of starving the golden grizzly, you could argue that a $6 million academic center shouldn't be a struggle, either.

No way it would happen; every penny of ticket sales revenue at UM is earmarked for a specific purpose. I'm just tipping my hat to Coach Bohl for having the 3% provision in his contract. I wonder if it's something that the university routinely puts into its contracts or if Bohl negotiated for it. If he went to them and said something like "I'll put together a winning program and fill the seats and in return, I want a percentage of the revenue" then he has even more of my admiration.
