27 year conference championship streak broken

For the first time since the 1984 - 1985 season a Montana team will not win or tie for a regular season championship in football, men's basketball, or women's basketball. A pretty amazing run to have at least one of the 3 revenue sports win a conference championship each year. Hopefully one of the programs will win a post season tournament to have some kind of championship for UM this year, but at this point it looks pretty bleak.

Better run, Chicken Little, the sky is falling!

Impressive run...

quite a number of posters here have been complaining that Montana needed a more competitive conference to be in, and wondering if schools like UNC would ever do anything. You got your wish...

Jon it certainly appears that Montana is once again at the same level as the rest of the teams in the Big Sky conference, including Northern Colorado. But for perspective, in the 84-85 season Nevada won the conference, and received a 14 seed in the NCAA tournament, while Montana received an NIT bid. Nevada's seed was one of the worst the BCS had received in a while - in 1984 Nevada was an 11 seed, '83 Weber was a 9, and of course in 82 Idaho was a 3 (having finished the season ranked 8th in the country). In 4 of the 10 tournaments before the 84-85 season the BSC representative had won a game in the tournament.

I suppose there is some similarity there in that if UNC wins the BSC they have an excellent chance of winning a play-in game to get to the field of 64, but it just doesn't seem the same. My fear is not that the BSC has caught up to Montana, but rather Montana has sunk to their level. Hopefully the BSC representative will surprise someone though, and win a credit game in the tournament.

Well, Montanans don't think big...not that it is a bad thing, but the chip on the shoulder attitude kinda lends itself to staying where it is comfortable. Now and then, UM or some MSU will break out and beat a UCLA or Colorado in bball or fball, and everyone raves, forgetting that those teams, at the time, were very underperforming and affected by other things...For example: on the football board, UM is giving the Griz no chance of beating Tennessee...yet were confident in downing MSU....not that it makes any difference...I would have liked to see UM at least to have played mediocre ball at Long Beach but somehow, they did not...maybe the BSC tourney will turn out well and UM will be able to regroup for a BIGGER opponent...we have guys ON THE TEAM that actually think they can win a few but right now, one is playing hampered by ankle injuries and the other is not getting enough play time to get into the rhythm....Montanans need to lose the "we can't compete with the big guys" attitude, or the "we don't have heart" thing....what they need is a power forward and a shooting guard....

Didn't the tournament expand to 64 teams in 1985? Not saying the BSC wasn't more respected then, but that would certainly explain why the teams had higher rankings when making the tournament.

A couple notes on this:

1. I wouldn't say that "quite a number" didn't feel UNC would be competitive. There are a few posters who moronically said they'd never win anything, but most of us knew with their recruiting area they'd eventually be competitive.

2. One year does not necessarily make one competitive. Let's see UNC do it consistently. Me thinks they're going to have a very difficult time doing that, at least in the short run. They start 5 players this year who have played in over 110 games each. Next year, it's not at all difficult to imagine they'll be fighting to even get into the BSC tournament.

3. FWIW, most of us still believe Montana should be in a more competitive conference. But keep in mind that wins and losses are only a part of that equation (albeit a rather large one). But you must also consider things like facilities, attendance, interest in the program (both locally and nationally), ability to generate revenue, etc. Montana has absolutely no peers in the BSC when it comes to those things. Montana belongs in a "better" conference, and in my mind it's something you're going to see in 3-5 years.

Everett....I see little interest in Montana changing to a more competitive conference.. ever....unfortunate, but true.

Ah shucks people, face it, we are not that good. HOWEVER, I think what we have in us is a great chance to upset a good team. Remember last years great upset? Lets be honest, we have super good kids that are coming along. Hit some outside shots and we are ROLLING. Lets keep in mind that some of our best known names have encountered difficulties in recent games.

I'd like to be the team to upset--- rather than be upset by the underdog! Eh? Guys need to play unleashed, stay tuned.

and, pretty telling

The only telling thing is you are still a jackoff POS, named SteveDill, and you got one board shut down and were permanently BANNED from this board, but your POS short ass keeps showing up to once again make an ass of yourself. Don't forget to put your lifts in before you go out today Shorty, I hear it snowed an inch, which would damn near cover your punk ass.

that's not true. we can still tie for the men's regular season championship. a loss by nc to ssu would tie us with nc and possibly wsu.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Is that all you got? Let's see, you forgot "running out the back door of the MO Club". If you got up out of your chair to change your Depends more often, maybe you could come up with some new material. I own you, just like the Bobcat posters on this site own you. We notice once again that you don't have gonads to post your name on here. Grow a pair, and post your name, or STFU, pussy-willow!
