I misread the title as "23 athletic directors make more than they spend". That would be interesting reading as well.

Montana is not the only institution that uses creative accounting methods to move revenue, attributable to the AD, over to non-AD departments. They never wish to show a surplus to the AD, which could dent booster contributions. The AD is more effective at fund-raising in many cases than the Foundation. They love to have the AD have to make the case that the AD needs help to stay competitive.

Even if athletics turn a loss there's more benefit to having them than not.. such as increased enrollment, more exposure for your university, and the money that athletic events bring into your community. The numbers don't lie, most athletic departments don't make money.. but what they lack in profit in their own dept they make up for in profiting other areas.
