I like to do this every year and now that Spring sports are in full swing, here's your weekly update on Spring Sports:
Men's Tennis: The defending Big Sky champions got their season started yesterday at home against Utah State. The Griz come into this season as heavy favorites to be the repeat champions. Utah State is always in contention in the MWC and they proved that yesterday knocking off the Griz 4-3. Kind of a disappointing performance for the Griz as they won the doubles point to get up 1-0 but then the top of the singles lineup got shelled as Tom Bittner and Baltazar Wiger-Nordas both lost in straight sets. A disappointing performance from those two as they're both Seniors and have both been nearly unstoppable in their Grizzly careers. We did get wins at the bottom of the lineup from Moritz Lesjak, Johnny Wilkinson, and then from Duncan McCall in the 3rd spot, but Bittner and Baltz need to be better moving forward and I know they will. The Griz are back at home next Sunday in a double header against Whitworth.
Track & Field: Griz T&F was back in action for the second straight week at the MSU Bobcat Invite competing against the cats, Idaho State and Wyoming. Through two weeks both the men's and women's teams have looked very strong. Both teams had plenty of event wins and I'm gonna do my best to point them all out but first I need you all to learn the name Callie Wilson. She's a freshmen from Bonnie Lake, Washington and through two indoor meets has already broken the school record in both the 60M and 200M and now owns the 3rd fastest 200M in Big Sky history. She right may be the favorite win the 60 and 200 at the Big Sky championships next month in Poky. Other event winners on the women's side include SR Mikenna Ells in the 400M, SR Erin Wilde in the High Jump (surprise), and JR Brooke Stayner winning the Pentathlon. On the Men's side, JR Karsone Beitz won the 60 and 200, JR Truman Thompson winning the 800M, the 4x400 relay, and FR Sam Henderson of Butte winning the High Jump. The team will be off next week before returning to action in Bozeman again the following week.
