2016 Recruit Breakdown and discussion

Holy moly, Payton's list of the Cats makes me realize how absurd both boards can be on recruits. When I see those names: Thibeult, Dirks, Dopps, Vitt, Halliburton, Stanton and Oldenburger, I remember every one of those guys being hyped up big time on BN. I guess we are ALL guilt of that.

If UM "burns" a red-shirt, my guess is it will be Toure, Akem or Crow.

Great write-up, Paytonlives.

My guess is that Toure (needs the weight room) and Crow (we are loaded at Safety) will red-s hirt. I see that you said, ""If UM "burns" a red-shirt"" though.

Pretty sure Taylor Dees, Brian Flotkoetter, Lee Perkins all started at some point. Young might have even started a few games because of injuries if memory serves me correct.

Other players that you have as non-contributors that have starts: Bleskin, Thomas, Timmer.

Other players that you have as non-contributors that are slated to start this year: Monte Folsom, Barth, Mahoney, and Gillis.

A lot of that 2014 class is likely to start too.

Anyways, probably a pretty close ratio when comparing to out-of-state recruits.

But is starting a game the same as making a big contribution?

There really is no perfect answer to this...

I hope ALL Montana players are successful and do thoroughly enjoy the guy that comes from Montana and is an awesome player.

But I find each year that both schools measure their Johnsons by how many Montana HS players they sign. I would just rather have the best three to five and dont care about having 15 dudes from Montana.

Personally, If I see a guy play against better competition in California, Washington etc. I am convinced that that will carry over to the college level, then say like the kid from Troy (msu signed) that was a man against boys in class B. Yes he might be great, I would just look at guys that produce against a lot better competition. And before we get the "Montana teams are every bit as good as other states teams, give it a rest. They are not. They have heart and the play with Montana pride (and sometimes that works well).

So I cant make any of the "Montana Kids or bust" crew change their minds... but I wont either.

I don't disagree with getting the best 3 to 5. However, I will just disagree on the importance of continuing with the effort to get quality walkons and partial scholly players. Facts are that the Montana kids have historically been very successful and make up a healthy portion of our all time greats and NFL representation. I am not naive to the fact that most of our recruits like almost any college football program in a small populus state need to come from outside the borders. I actually really liked the makeup of this year's recruiting class. I think the coaching staff has a good recruiting strategy and know whats best for the program than anyone behind a keyboard would.

As a junior, Floetkoetter caught 36 passes for 530 yards and 3 TDs. He was HM All-Big Sky. He was pretty decent.

As far as playing against better competition, I agree to some extent, but you also have to consider that some kids are made to look better by the team they are surrounded by. A decent RB could be made to look great by a good O-line. The reality is at the FCS level most kids are a gamble. They could be busts or someone who should have been FBS. Both UM and MSU should always try to get at least some in state kids if they are capable of playing. I be less inclined to be a fan if there weren't at least some local kids.
