With Saturday in the books for GRIZ team camp, looking forward to the tournament Sunday. I only took in the 2nd half of Saturday's team camp, so not quite as much to report as last year. Actually very little to report as for the high school talent pool in the region. The good news is, 62 teams at the camp this year, which is the most ever. The bad news is, overall the talent there this year is a huge drop off from last year. I was told by a few of the HS coaches a lot of teams did not have a lot of their top talent at the camp this year. No 1 team stood out to me. Jeff Hayes' coaching will be tested this season. They lost a lot of talent, other than just Tres Tinkle. Hellgate was very inconsistent today. They do have some nice young talent. It will likely be a rollercoaster season for them this year. I hope they peak come tournament time. Sentinel actually looked like the better team to me today.
It was surely noticeable too. To be honest, of the 7 games I watched, I only saw 1 sure fire Div 1 recruit. Fortunately for the GRIZ that recruit is Rayquan (sp?) Evans of Billings Skyview. Hard to believe he will only be a JR. He really did not try to dominate the scoring. He can take over a game whenever he wants to though. He was more of a playmaker from what I saw today . He makes the game look so easy, when he is running the offense, or scoring. He has filled out a lot the past year and I am guessing he is close to 6'3" now. His game is penetrating and drawing fouls. Last year, I think he only missed 1 FT all weekend. Today, he struggled a little from line. He is a joy to watch play basketball. It will be sweet if the GRIZ can land him, he is going to be a great player.
Unfortunately for the GRIZ, after this summer he may no longer be flying under the radar in obscurity of Montana. He will be leaving to play summer ball for a team in North Carolina. I feel that is a wise choice on his part. The talent pool this area does not challenge him whatsoever.
As for the GRIZ, the only players back already for the summer are Breunig, Dunn, and Boehning. The rest of the crew should be back sometime in July. Breunig just got back from Germany. He told me it was great being back in the states to work better on his game. Speaking of which, his perimeter game looks much improved. He was shooting perimeter shots for about 90 minutes during a 2 hour break for the WAG hoops. FT's looked easy for him. He was nailing 15 to 18 foot shots at over 60%. He then went out to 3. He shot the 3 fine, but took him some time to find some consistency. Once he found the shot , he hit over 50% from 3 when he got warmed up. It was obvious the main off season point of emphasis for him is his perimeter game. He is going to be a nightmare to defend this season.
Dunn's left lower arm was in a cast. Indeed he did have surgery. He told me he will be 100% sometime in August. Apparently, he played from January on with a fractured right wrist. That kid is tough. Nonetheless, he was consistently working on ball handling with his right.
Boehning is excited to finally be seeing regular playing time following his FR RS year. He has filled out and is very solid. I think he will be a huge help in the paint and the boards this season. It looks like he has spent a lot of time in the weight room and conditioning.
Coaches and players are very high on Walter Wright. Apparently, he is the real deal. Also there will be some more personnel news down the road. It is unknown if the GRIZ will be adding any other players before the season. Sounds to me, if someone falls to the GRIZ, great. If not, the GRIZ can add more the next season. I asked about the schedule, they are still trying to finalize a few games.
An added bonus for me: Thompson Falls only lost 1 game so far, and it was a close loss. They will have a great SR class. Last year at the camp, they were inconsistent. This year, I could see the difference in experience and some talent maturing. Trace Hoisington and MacKenzie Holt will be hand full for other class B teams to handle inside. They are tall and athletic. If Holt were to ever focus on basketball, to go with freakish athleticism, he would be unstoppable. He relies on athleticism 100%. He threw down a few nice dunks today. Their PG, Tanner Laws is one hell of a floor general. You can tell he is a coaches son. I will be looking forward to seeing if T Falls puts it all together this coming season. They have some nice talent.
I hope to make the camp tournament tomorrow. I am stoked for basketball season to get here. :thumb:
