2014 Weekly Position Discussion, week 2 - Safety

Just like last year we’ll hop from both sides of the ball in our weekly discussions. Last week I was in Washington DC, so I couldn’t get this together. For this week a good discussion point will be in regards to the safeties, a position that’s been “under fire” for a few years now.

Free Safety Starter – #12 Matt Hermanson – “Hermey” enters his 3rd year as a starter in the defensive secondary. A mainstay on the field but someone who has been criticized for lack of consistency this year is his final chance to go out strong. After a promising 2011 season he had a very rough 2012 but improved in 2013. Still, much criticism remained as Griz fans have grown accustomed to stud safeties all the time. For Hermey last season the stats were solid, 107 tackles (2nd best on the team), 2 recovered fumbles, and 3 forced fumbles. However there was one thing really missing, 0 interceptions. Hermanson is going to be relied upon to be the “QB of the defense”, he’s going to need to have command of the backfield more than ever before. In 2014 I’m hoping to see a little more ball hawking from the guy and grab some picks. 100+ tackles is great, forced fumbles, yep – but interceptions, build on that. Also, a stat that may speak to challenges in the passing game, only 1 pass break up last year. In spring camp Hermey looked to be in the stride he was in last season, solid but not flashy. I hope to see some more aggression out of him and improvement in the passing game – that’ll go a long way to helping the defensive secondary.

Strong Safety Starter – #31 Justin Whitted - Whitted will be an interesting addition to the safety mix. Replacing Bo Tully I see some nice upgrades in Whitted. First and foremost, he’s a hitter. He’s listed at 191 pounds but that’s a weight from last fall, he’ll probably open this fall closer to 200. I’ve seen him lay some real good punishment on WRs and TEs in a few practices. Whitted is athletic but raw, reminds me a lot of watching Mike McCord – not the fastest guy on the team but doesn’t get run over. Consistency and adapting to starting and playing alongside Rominger will be key. Whitted kind of faded out as spring went on, he can’t do that come the regular season.

Free Safety Backup – #39 Jake Dallaserra – I like what I’ve seen in Jake and I could be wrong but he might’ve also been playing some spot duty opposite of Whitted as well. Dallaserra is another hitter, a little bit smaller than Whitted and Hermey though. His coverage is good but not great. He’ll make a hell of a special teams player this year and will be in line to rotate in this year and possibly start next year as the free safety. Needs to continually work on coverage, had some issues with TE’s and taller WRs. Also when being left on an island as the last line of defense WRs tended to get the best of him.

Strong Safety Backup – #13 Zach Gratton – Zach has been battling with Mick Delaney (the player, not the coach) but seems to have an edge for depth here. Another guy who has a good chance to make some special teams impact this year. Zach’s very fast and quick, last year he was still adapting to safety but this year he’s made improvements. Based on what I’ve seen from Whitted, Hermey, and Dallaserra – he’s not at their level yet, but he’s improving. Better in coverage and good size for run support.

Depth – #28 Jamaal Anderson – A converted corner Anderson is a little on the smaller side at safety (5-11, 180). Anderson must’ve been hurt or just buried the whole spring b/c I don’t recall seeing him out there that often. Will keep an eye out for him this fall.

Depth – #41 Mick Delaney – The coaches grandson has actually shown me a bit this spring. The last week he was absolutely punishing some WRs. It came at the expense of some missed assignments and getting caught looking at the QB too much though, but that’ll come in time. I like the way he plays mean, now build on that pass coverage and we’ll see how he looks in the years ahead.

Depth – Jake Mann – New recruit, will be here this fall. Will have to see what he can add but I’m guessing he’ll redshirt.

Why no Trent McKinney? He’s not listed on the online roster. I’m not sure if he would’ve fit anyways, he showed he was athletic enough but was very unskilled in tackling and was fooled a bunch in coverage.

Manu Rasmussen is one of the only recruits being discussed as possibly playing as a true freshman, the other is David Reese. Manu is gonna be a stud.

As always, good stuff and right on point. Here's some of my input (not nearly as insightful as BW) on each player and my depth chart.
SS-Justin Whitted Jr (2013- 11G 18tkl 1PBU 1FR)
Zach Gratton Jr (2013- 2G 1tkl)
Jake Dallasera Jr (2013- 13G 11tkl)
Evan Epperly Fr (2013- high school)

FS-Matt Hermanson Sr (2013- 12G 107tkl 2tfl 1.0sk 1PBU 3FF 2FR)
Jamal Anderdson Jr (2013- 4G 5tkl 1PBU)
Mick Delaney Fr (2013- redshirt)
Trent McKinney Jr (2013- played QB)
Manu Hudson-Rasmussen Fr (2013- high school)
Jake Mann Fr (2013- high school)

Strong Safety
Justin Whitted will be givin the SS job with Gamboa moving to LB. At 6'1" and 191, he has great speed after starting his UM career as a corner. He has only played in 16 career games but he has always been a highly thought of player. Hopefully this year he can show more of what he can do on the feild.

Zach Gratton will be returning for his Jr year and will be batteling for the back up SS position. The 6'1" 195 lb'er has played in 11 games and recorded 4 tkls. Last year he only played in two games because of a concusion after playing in nine games his Fr year. From what I understand of the redshirt rules, with approval from the NCAA, he is elegible for a medical redshirt

Jake Dallasera will be a Jr and be a back up at the SS spot. He played in all 13 games last year and registered 11 tackles. A defensive minded player, he did play WR his true Fr year on the squad team. As a Sr at Butte High he was All-State at safety and WR. He was also a standout wrestler where he won two state titles and a 2nd place finish. At 5'11" and 180, I'm sure that wrestling expierience will help also on the feild with some takedowns.

Free Safety
Matt Hermanson will be the leader of the secondary next year. Comin in as a three year starter, he is lookin to put himself towards the top of the career tackles list. If he duplicates last year he will finish at least fourth on the schools all time list. He has already played in 35 career games and started in 23 of them. He is arguably the best run support safety in the conference but has been known to be out of position at times in pass coverage. If he can improve on that without taking away from his run D, he should be 1st team all Big Sky next year and possibly earning a FA contract.

Jamal Anderson will be a Jr next year and should see more playing time then last year. In '13 he got in four games after playing one year at a community college in 2011 where he was named an all-conference selection after recording 35 tackles and 4 int's. At 5'11" and 180, he's got decent size and speed. He was a corner last year and has been switched to safety for spring but I'll bet he plays both come fall. We should hope to see the typical progression from him that we see in most community/junior college transfers. Their first year is always an adjustment but by their second year they usually show alot of improvement. He may not be a stud but our depth will be improved the more he plays.

Mick Delaney is most notably known for being the grandson of Coach Delaney, unfortunately. Being a RS-Fr in '14, he probably won't play much besides special teams, but at 6'0" and 185 he still is deserving of getting a chance to play. He didn't get named a two time all conference for defensive back in football and two time all league pick in track for nothin'.

Trent McKinney is finally making a position change. Just not the one everyone was expecting. For spring ball the Jr will be playing safety. I tried to find any record if him playing deffence in high school and couldn't. He is a very gifted athlete though and that should help him make the adjustment but he's got a lot of learnin' to do.

incoming freshman
Manu Hudson-Rasmussen was a big get from rival E Wash. The 6'0" 180 lb Oregon native had committed to the Eagles and at the last minute changed his mind to commit to us. In high school he was a standout on both sides of the ball but he was a star offensively. He earned 3 letters and was 1st team all state at RB and safety his Sr year. He was also the conference offensive player of the year rushing for 2000 yards and an amazing 38 td's. Defensivly he recorded 13 pass break ups from his safety position. He was also named to the Under Armour Polynesian All American team. I'd really like to see him redshirt this year just cus I'm selfish and I want him to start as many years as possible.

Evan Epperly is a 5'10" 180 lb recruit from Glacier in Kalispell. He went down to the wire choosing between us and state. He's drawn some pretty high praise with comparisons to Tim Hauck and Colt Anderson. A bit premature mabey but I for one am hoping he lives up to em. He was a three year letterman earning 1st team all state at WR and CB his Sr year. He was also tabbed the western conference AA offensive MVP. From his CB position he recorded 10 break ups and 5 int's. At Montana he will play safety and givin' a little room to roam and hopefully utilize those ball hawking abilities. He was also a standout B ball player earning 4 letters and 1st all state honors his Jr year. He finished his prep career as Glaciers all time(granted, not a long history)leader in assists and steals. I don't see a two way player in his future but I do think those abilities will help him on the feild.

Jake Mann is a 6'0" 185 lb walk on athlete from Cali. Known primarily as a running QB in his time in high school, he earned two all league selections at that position while passing for 1100 yards and running for 1500 yards and being responsible for 25 td's in two years. Obviously he ain't gonna line up behind the center for us but his athletic ability should at the very least allow him to be a great role player for us and probably a special teams standout.

Since Coach Ty has said that Hermey is as good as Colt Anderson, I guess the Griz D has nothing to worry about. I am glad that I can sleep at night now.

Hermanson quietly had a strong rebound year last year. I think he might've been a little bit of a victim of the system (possibly) where he was just dropping back and hopefully not getting beat deep. It came at the cost of being more agressive on defense, and when we last saw that from him it was 2011 and it was Breske's system.

This Breske! Fine work, as always, BW!

I think we're deep enough to where we can RS Epperly and Rasmussen. I beleive Whitted will b an upgrade to Tully and all our reserves minus Delanny played good minuets last year. Some of them are a little short on athleticism but I think they're good hitters and hopefully good instincts.

Whitted and Hermey are 6-1, not too bad for FCS safeties, IMO.

This could be one of the better hitting groups of safeties we've had. I've liked Whitted's intuition and ability to read plays and be in the right position at the right time - that's something Tully had troubles with his whole career (at least that's what I observed).

For the most part they're sound tacklers, they've even received praise for their tackling from their DC and position coach. Safety should be an upgrade this year.
