2014 Griz Football Recruiting (10 Signed /15 Formal admission)

I have to be honest here, I am not liking what I am hearing with recruiting. I feel like last year we did a lot better. I am not sure if this year there is a lack of information, but this class besides one or two recruits do not have me that excited for the future. Hoping we can steal a 2 or 3 star level recruit by signing day, and we hear some good news today on a transfer or two.

They have limited scholarships to give this season. That, combined with the NCAA loss of schollies is going to mean a very small class, so they cannot afford mistakes as they have had in the past.

Really wish we would have landed the kicker from Helena High. The kid is really good.

Interesting in that article about him committing to the 'scats he commented about all the competition here....as a kicker I would have looked at the incumbent's performance and been licking my chops!

Then again, with our limited scholly availability, the LAST thing we need to do is give ANOTHER scholly to a kicker.

aren't scholarships evaluated each year and if you are not deserving.,,,well........I thought it would be just like and academic scholarship, if grades not up to standard, then scholarship awarded to someone else...am I flat wrong on this ?

“Getting an athletic scholarship doesn’t mean you’ll cruise until you graduate. Athletic scholarships are awarded for one academic year at a time. While there are no guaranteed four-year athletic scholarships in NCAA Division I or II, one-year scholarships can be renewed annually for a maximum of five years within a six-year period.”

Thompson will be a Montana State Bobcat. He gave his verbal commitment to the MSU coaching staff on Sunday morning.

“It was the coaches and the environment and academics there were great,” Thompson said. “Business is what I like and they have a really good business program. I really liked the professors. The players were awesome. We got to go out with some of the players. The coaches were great, like family. It’s a great program and a great opportunity. I think I have a better opportunity here than in Missoula.”

Thompson will have his tuition paid for two academic years with the promise of more scholarship aid as soon as he hits the playing field.

“I’m guaranteed two years of a scholarship, Coach Ash will pay for my tuition for two years, but if I’m starting this year or next year, he will bump it up,” Thompson said. “It’s just a start for tuition. Missoula I would have had to walk on. They have those two other guys there (Chris Lider, Ben Worst). It would have been a struggle. I didn’t want to walk on and maybe redshirt. That’s another $18,000 I would have to had to pay.”

Thompson and a group of 12 other prospects arrived in Bozeman on Friday. After lunch, they went to the academic center and met with professors from their desired majors. Thompson and Matt Stewart, a punter from Corona, Calif., roomed together and talked to the business school advisors together. After dinner at Outback Steakhouse that evening, the prospects hung out with player hosts and potential future teammates.

On Saturday, the recruits checked out Bobcat Stadium and toured the facilities at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. The group then watched highlight films, first from Montana State’s most recent run that saw the Bobcats win 37 games and three Big Sky titles over the last four seasons, then the highlight films of the 16 players who have given verbal commitments to sign with MSU on National Signing Day on Feb. 5.

“The recruits were awesome,” Thompson said. “In Missoula, they weren’t really friendly or talkative. Here, they were so nice. I roomed with Matt Stewart from California and we got to know each other well.”

Sounds like kind of a pussy. That, combined with his aforementioned fear of competition, would indicate that blowsman is definitely a better fit.

Sounds like Mr Thompson better have his eyes open as he runs down the field after kick off (assuming he sees playing time).

Yeah, because wanting to get along with future teammates isn't important at all.

And going to a situation where he's more likely to start is just really stupid, and shows fear instead of maybe some brains.

I understand we don't like the Cats, but calling an 18 year old a pussy because of that? C'mon...some man you are.

Not to mention walk-on vs full tuition scholarship is a no brainer.

I made that post with the intention of drawing out the pussies on this board. Mission accomplished.

Man, it sure does seem like a lot of people are having a hard time grasping what's going on with UM's recruiting. First, this was ALWAYS going to be a smaller than average class for a couple of important reasons. 1. The senior class wasn't huge. Great players yes, big numbers no. 2. There are currently quite a few IMPACT players on the 90-man who played this past season with either no assistance or a partial and were promised a bump for the 2014-15 school year. These guys have ALREADY EARNED that scholarship money, so that means less to go around for the upcoming class.

Secondly, it astonishes me how many people are surprised by this process. Isn't EVERY true Griz fan aware of the NCAA sanctions? Less scholarships means less recruits. PERIOD THE END. Not to mention, this is the first year in which the four less schollies take effect. No Montana coaching staff has had to go through something like this before. They are learning to deal with this on the fly. I think they deserve a bit of slack. Can you imagine how hard it is for Justin Green and others to sit down and look kids in the eye and tell them how greatly they want them to be a Griz, how much they NEED them to be a Griz, then ask their parents to pay for a year, possibly two? And I'm talking about recruits who would normally get money, not walk-on type players. THAT is what's going on with UM right now. Anyone who didn't see this coming when the sanctions were announced wasn't paying very close attention.
