2013 Griz Football Class Signed (24)

Cant's announce hiring of new OC. Isn't it an old political trick to announce a bad news story late in the day on Fridays?

And if you havent taken the time to watch video of MSU's recruits, please don't respond.

Wait, would I have to go to Bobcat Nation to do that? No thanks, I'll just wait until November and watch 'em on the field.

96....don't think Roderick was anything to write home about. Third stringer at Nevada-Reno..not so much....

He would have been our #1 last year. But I'm jacked about Simis. :thumb:

maybe so, but he would have been the most athletic QB on the Griz roster

Maybe the Cats do have the better recruiting class, but they have their own board. If they'd like to talk about the in-state recruits they're getting, there's even a thread for that here. Can we please try to keep this thread to strictly Griz recruits though? I don't think that's too much to ask for.

There has been a lot of discussion about the lack of linemen especially OL recruits in the list of commits. But the consensus is that the Griz still have a great class and that the emphasis has been on the skill positions and that there is no need for O lineman. I don't agree with that at all. The coaches clearly want and need linemen. They have offered a number of OL prospects but apparently none have accepted. If you were to look at the recruiting sites you will see that there are published offers to OL prospects that are not listed in this forum. But I expect on signing day if not before we will see that the Griz have new linemen coming in next year. If not they will load up next year like they have done with the DBs this year. But I really like the talent coming in next year. The secondary will be much improved.

Is it possible that O-linemen prospects look at the # of bodies in front of them and simply are looking for a place with less numbers?

It is true that we have a lot of young returning guys on the line. It would be nice to see one really good one in this class. But they only have so many scholarships to work with. The coaches have done a really good job and with the talent coming back this could be a really good team even for Griz standards.

Griz are looking at Devin Gray out of Nevada... Was the States leading WR with 93 catches, 1300 yards and 17 TDs... When he broke his collarbone in November.

Football: Reed WR Gray out for year

Reed’s come-from-behind victory over rival Spanish Springs in last week’s Division I North semifinals did not come without cost. The Raiders will be without standout wide receiver Devin Gray when they take on Damonte Ranch in Friday’s region championship.

Gray suffered a broken collar bone trying to make a diving catch late in the third quarter. The senior and state leader in receiving yards and touchdown catches will be out six weeks with the injury.

“It’s really disappointing. I would do anything to play right now,” Gray said as he watched his teammates go through practice on Tuesday.

X-rays Saturday morning revealed the full extent of Gray’s injury.

“I was hoping it was just a strain and I could play with some pain. But that’s not what happened,” he said.

Gray, at 6-feet-2 and 165 pounds with very good hands, had 93 catches for 1,329 yards and 17 touchdowns this year. He had seven receptions for 112 yards and two scores against the Cougars before he was hurt.

“I say it’s a tough loss but you know that kind of stuff is going to happen,” Reed coach Ernie Howren said. “It’s not we’re going to change our offense because he’s not in there. We’re going to run the things we run.

“Who can handle losing one of the best players in the North? The best player, though obviously I’m biased. There is nobody better than him. To lose that kind of a guy, you just have to find a way. But it’s not going to be easy. … Not having him line up with us on Friday night will be difficult, emotionally, too. But as a team we’ll be all right.”

Brett Chaney, Trae Wells and Casey Higgins will be asked to help fill the void left by Gray — who likely will miss half of the basketball season as well.

Chaney is the team’s second-leading receiver with 58 catches for 874 yards and six touchdowns. The senior had the victory-sealing touchdown catch last week.

“It’s a huge loss. He’s such a big part of our offense,” Reed quarterback Mark Nowaczewski said of Gray. “So much of what we do is based him and his ability. It’s always hard to replace someone like that but I think we have the right skill set with other guys to do it.”

Damonte ranked 10th in the 11-team region in pass defense during the regular season.

“It’s unfortunate for them as that’s about two touchdowns per game that they have to account for,” Mustangs coach Shawn Dupris said. “But I also know they have other guys who can step up.”

Dupris said his team has been “really lucky” in regards to injuries all season. Damonte was without one offensive lineman last week against McQueen because of a knee injury — Dupris declined to name the player — but that he would be back this week.
