2012 Griz Football Recruiting Class/ Summer Transfers

UCA BEAR FAN HERE...just wondering how your recruiting class looks to you guys?
I think the Bears filled some vacant spots with some quality transfers and some nice
high school kids. The coaches are very well pleased as are most of the fans I talked with
yesterday after the press conference.

Just spent two days with the father of a kid you signed, Tyler Wilemon. Great get. He turned down offers from ISU, Sac. State, and Weber to play for the Bears. This is the kid that our illustrious mods banned me from the board for a week for "possible NCAA violations". What a joke.

EGriz is banning people for "possible ncaa violations"? Sounds like a big job and a slippery slope.

Got my first look at Clint LaProwse (OL-Miles City) as a hoopster lastnight reffing his game. Natural size, long arms, good feet and room to grow. Though we nailed him for 4 fouls in a little more than 2 quarters (a little of that bull-in-a-china shop thing), he played well down the stretch and impressed me with his athleticism.

I had heard Riley King will be playing BB for the Saints.
Haha what a joke

Care to elaborate?
Around Missoula all I have heard for the last three years is how Reilly King will definately play Division 1 he just hasn't decided which sport yet. Argued with a guy at a Griz game trying to convince me he could play Basketball OR Football for the Griz and in reality he is going to be playing NAIA Basketball

I have nothing against the kid but people in Missoula hyped him up WAY too much. But that's not his fault. I also admit I have somewhat of a bad attitude and lack of respect when it comes to NAIA Athletics.

YO GROWLER, we did not want/get Wilemon. Sounds like everyone is happy! Bears need more help. Good luck to them and Wilemon.

Banned for a week? Was a fine involved?

Wilemon was good enough to be offered full rides by 4 Big Sky schools, so he must be pretty good. Coach Gragg told me that the Griz had allocated only 4 schollies for O-linemen, and already had 5 commitments for that position when I called him about Wilemon. It was too late in the process to get him in the loop to be recruited by the Griz. I think you are mistaken in saying that he could not play for Montana, without knowing anything about him. Lay-off the beer.

What exactly is your beef with the NAIA? You need to elaborate a little.
I just don't see NAIA as quality college athletics. I will occasionaly go to a Rocky Mountain College game but generally do not follow NAIA. I guess I developed my "beef" with NAIA through talking with friends and guys I know that have recently played in the Frontier. Every former Carroll player I know thinks their Carroll team could beat the Bobcats and Grizzlies. They don't think the talent difference from NAIA to FCS is that significant. Many guys I know who played at Tech and Rocky feel that themselves and some of their teammates are better than lots of the Montana players on UM and MSU. I realize that athletes have to have a certain sense of confidence, but in general I feel NAIA fans and players are delusional to the level of football they play at.

As others alluded to in the PSU/Carroll thread, the size and speed difference from NAIA to FCS is staggering. There is a much bigger talent and size gap between NAIA and FCS then FCS to FBS

I understand where you are coming from in regards to those individuals that talk crap about being able to compete with GOOD fcs level teams. I agree that the size and speed difference is just too much to make up for no matter how good the coaching is. I played jc baseball and then played at a NAIA school. I was an All American at that level and did not run around telling everyone that I am better than the upper level players. I just don't think you should stereotype all NAIA because we are not all that way. I think most people just want to continue playing whatever sport it is as long as possible no matter where it is. And Carrol can't compete with the Griz or cats.

Great 2012 recruiting class!

A little disappointed the Griz still don't sign lightening at RB (unless Chase plays RB). But Counts must be pretty good if the coaches compare him to Dan Moore. :thumb:

Looking forward to seeing the JC guys, they will play right away as you don't recruit them if they are not ready to compete "now".

That's the hope at least. Sometimes you bring JC guys in and then they get their asses kicked in practice by the Freshman and Sophmores that he was brought in to play over. Kevin Frank didn't help us at all last year.

True, Frank was disapointing. However I am hoping his situation turns into the same as our starter opposite of Tru this season. That guy came in as a Junior and didn't excell, but he used that as a wakeup call and motivator and turned into a great player/starter the next season...his SR year. The guy I am talking about is obviously Houston Roots.

The players are from the same JC ironically, Sierra Col. They come from nearby cities, Roots in Sacramento and Frank from Elk Grove. And they wore similar numbers Roots 20 and Frank 21.

Let's hope Frank turns into the stud Roots became when Roots became a Senior. *fingers crossed*

I don't know why, though, that Tyrone Holmes is listed as a DT instead of a DE with his 4.9, as reported, speed. He'd be nice to see coming off the edge with Gamboa (OLB) from the other direction.

265 out of High School playing in the FCS? That's DT all day. Shoot, 90% of the time he's a DT in FBS. And in college you can really do damage if you have a 3 technique getting up the field with that kind of speed.

Well, I was just mentioning it since I've never came across a site, except the one that "NewPapaBear" found, that ever listed Holmes as a DT; but there is even sportsnetwork.com that does as well, now that I've done further research. I think it's a miscue if anything. A Strong Side DE primarily, yes, sometimes as a TE, some even as a OLB with his "speed" factored in. Accordingly < http://dyestat.rise.espn.go.com/search.jsp?athID=187811" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which also has his 110 M Hurdles listed as a 14.9, which isn't all that bad, considering that the State of Montana All-State all-time record is held by a Matt Larson out of Helena Capitol, at 14.21, achieved back in 2002. Going by the position recognized http://highschool.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1288722" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , and http://california.scout.com/a.z?s=166&p=8&c=1&nid=5611424" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; seeing him more as a "speed rusher" from the DE position. Came across one site that had his 40 time listed as 4.9, but I thought everybody knew that, so I didn't keep track of it. But his 110 Meter Hurdles time is impressive, for his size, if anything.

With a couple more inches Holmes could be compared to a Jared Allen type like he was with Idaho State a while back; a bigger, speedier version of a Dane Fletcher when he was with MSU, if his football prowess develops, which should be interesting to watch and see how and if he develops as such. Could be a possibility but it is really quite too early to tell yet; but it does sound like he has the potential. http://espn.go.com/blog/high-school/oregon/post/_/id/64/got-game-tyrone-holmes" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I'm surprized that "Paytonlives" isn't going gaga over Holmes like he did a while back over Jordan Canada. Listed as a "Three Star" on some sites.

I have a hard time believing that 110 hurdle time...that's a really, really fast time. The reason I have doubts about it is because well...he only runs a 4.9 40. I understand that for his size, that is pretty dang quick, but in general, not a very fast time. Especially since it's most likely a hand time, therefore you would figure it at about a 5.0-5.1 40 time. I'm sure he's a great athlete, but comparing him to a faster Dane Fletcher or a Jared Allen type is just silly.
