2012 BSC Stats: Any Meaning Here?

This am's Grizzly Game Day pull-out, p. G14, in the Missoulian has some 2012 BSC stats I'd like to comment on. There's been a lot of "weeping and gnashing of teeth" on this board about last year's record, understandably so. But, there are some things to build on for this year & I think the 2012 stats have some clues.

I know eGrizzers want UM to finish among the top 3 in every category. All I'm trying to do is put a little perspective on this board re: 2012. And, I may not understand all the factors behind a stat. Respectful comments, welcome. Anyway, my comments.

Scoring Offense: MSU in 5th, UM in 6th. Not that far apart.

Scoring Defense: OK, MSU at the top, but UM in 5th. Not too bad for UM, considering its record.

(BTW, this topic is not just about MSU vs. UM.)

Total Offense: UM at the top? WTH?

Total Defense: UM 4th.

Pass Efficiency: UM 8th. Could be due to QB unsettled position & green QB's.

Pass D Efficiency: UM 8th. UND game had a lot to do w/ that. Also, perhaps green secondary.

Turnovers: UM 8th. This & previous 2 obviously need improvement.

Rushing Offense: UM 2nd. Probably why Delaney installing more pro-set this year. Building on a strength. (Air Read/read-option out? Welcome back, Bobby Ball!)

Rushing Defense: UM 1st. An obvious strength, here. Keep it up, Griz!

Indiv Rushing: Nguyen 6th Kirk 8th.

Indiv Receiving: UM 0 Obvious room for improvement, here.

Pass eff.: What? SSH on here? Even at 8th? And, ahead of Lobato? Maybe why he's #2 QB this year.

Total Offense: McKinney, 11th. McGhee 3rd. Again, acknowledged UM QB situation & green QBs.

Kick returns: UM unrated. Well, MSU is too.

Punt returns: Nguyen 3rd. MSU unrated.

All-Purpose Running: Nguyen 6th. MSU unrated.

Scoring: Kirk 4th Lider 6th Lider has to improve, otherwise scoring potential has to go to other offensive games. But, Lider has scored more than any other UM offensive player. Keep that in mind.

Place Kicking: Lider 4th He could have won us another 1 or 2 games. BH depended a lot on his kickers. FG situations are one of the most tense situations in any game. I don't know if Lider lacks confidence, ability, or both. But, he wouldn't have been recruited if he didn't have the ability.

Punting: Shaw 8th Looks like there's vast improvement, here, going into 2013. Let's hope so.

(Of course there's more behind these stats than just the kickers. Everyone knows ST performance by all players has to improve a lot.)

Tackles: Coyle 3rd Tripp 9th Kanongata'a 20th Coyle the unsung hero of Griz defense.

Was our rush D #1 only because teams were busy passing all over us? I mean Bauman had a field day when a team really wanted to run. Just something to think about and look for in the new season. How did our opponents yards/carry compare to other team's defenses?

I also wonder what the Griz are looking to do to improve in the kick/punt return game. With Mariani and Sambrano in the past, they were able to shift games completely around (South Dakota State, Cal Poly, etc.) completely based on the return game.

I'll toss a comment in on this. IMO, the 2013 Grizzlies are gonna be as solid of a team as we've seen in a while. Every game last season was within 10 points... with a couple green QBs!! Our depth is better than last year all across the board. The kicking MUST improve. I seen a stat a while back that said Lider was a better kicker in his first year than that of the previous 4, in clouding Carp and we all know where he's at. With these extra experienced FBS drop downs and their already experienced guys, the 2013 team is gonna be a FORCE. I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the Semis. That's just my :twocents: :D

I agree, I think our rush defense is good, but not as good as the stats suggest. Also, sacking the QB stats for some players may be misleading, if you are being thrown on every down you are bound to get more sacks because you have more chances. Seems like we would get a ten yard sack and give up a twenty yard pass play on the next down.

I am cautiously optimistic about our defense and punt formations (Delaney).

Bauman's don't come along very often...

True. I also just looked up the conference only statistics from last year (http://www.bigskyconf.com/custompages/football/2012/stats/confonly.htm) and the Griz at 3.2 yards per carry were only behind Portland State, who were at 3.0.

Also, in the the pass D category, Montana was the only team who had greater than 300 pass attempts made on them (352). Interestingly enough, Montana was third in yards per attempt at 6.9. Teams just passed a lot on us it looks like, so it looks like a case of quantity > quality.

So if you look at it from an individual play by play point of view: UM rush D: 2nd, UM pass D: 3rd. Weird, maybe the sky isn't falling.
