2009 style of play?

I thought this would be a different HYPOTHETICAL topic to discuss...
First, I would like to preface this by making it known I'm just sittin around watchin the Davidson-Wisc. game, and I'm the only one home so I don't know if this is a crazy idea or not...

So, in 2009, the year after Jordo is gone, how about a nice little offense ran around Staudacher? This idea comes from watchin Curry and how clean, but streaky, his shot is. I think Stauds has just a nice shot...if not better, and a little more accuracy. Even consider the comparison through stats...

Now, obviously Curry's numbers are higher, since he is the centerpeice of that team. But percentage wise Ryan is just as strong. Curry averages 3 times more points, but took 3 times more shots. Curry does have the 4 more games so that adds to his shot total I guess. But percentage wise Ryan is pretty equal in comparison, and like I said before, and I think some here would agree with me, Ryan's shot is cleaner than a nun's piss test.
Curry is definitely stronger in the rebounding, but in 2009 Ryan doesn't need to worry about that with Qvale and Ward, and if the recruiting goes good, an athletic small forward with a knack for boards.
Davidson has a sound point guard that plays heady and in control ball. I haven't seen Stockton play, but on a whim I would guess he could be equal to Richards. But that's a guess since, like I said, I haven't seen Stockton play...OR Ward for that matter.
And I don't even know where to start with Selvig! From what I hear, since he is another I have not seen, he can shoot pretty decently. Work on his outside and midrange game and he could be deadly with his height as another threat.
On the defensive end, it looks like Curry is pretty solid, but Ryan is no slouch on that end of the court either, and that's just an opinion.

In the time it took me to research this and get this in the right wording CBS switched back to the TX-Stan game as Davidson has a 15 minute lead wtih 2 minutes to go. 71 points on Wisconsin! Only Duke and Marquette have scored more points than that on Wisconsin this season. Wisc. Schedule
This team is a great story, and fun to watch. How does this sound to y'all?
 
...oh, maybe I shoulda talked it outloud if it's that crazy of an ideer. Oh well, I can blame it on silence and :drinking: :thumb:
 
That’s what I meant by saying “you are funny”. Our offense is stuck somewhere back in the 80's and I don't see it changing. If the coaches were basketball savvy, they would have changed some things as we continued to loose. It should be apparent that you need to run an offense that is right for your personnel.

Did you hear the comment by Dr Tom's son at Drake the other night? He was asked why he didn't run his Dad's offense and he said that while he liked his Dad's offense but it did not work with the players that he had this year....Some would say smart guy...others call this coaching
 
When Larry was here they ran Triangle stuff which I thought worked pretty well and allowed a lot of inside outside action. Plus you don't need a dominate post for the Triangle O to be an effective O but, when you do have a dominate post it's even tougher to defend. I think Tinkle has gone more back to the days of Monte and the emphasis of getting the ball inside with high low action with not looking to get much action out his guards other than to pass the ball inside. Monte's high low works great if you got 2 post like the Lopez brothers.

I agree with Rimrocker on the point the coaches need to find a system that allows what talent they do have to be able to play to their strengths on every trip down the floor.
 
Regardless of offense we run, the GRIZ need players capable and willing to penetrate. That is the biggest thing I feel this program has been missing the last few years. Ellis did it alot more his Jr year. Dlouhy did it more often from the 3 his Jr year too. Criswell and Matthews did it consistently with great results. Matt Martin finally did it now and then his SR year with good results when he did. I wish Austin Swift had stuck things out here, his game was tailored to that. Hasquet put up a few games of 5 plus assists, those games he created easy buckets for teammates with penetration. CET penetrated the Defense quite often on his high assist games this year. This HAS to be implemented and emphasized starting right now to work on in the offseason!!! No if, ands, or buts about it. I am hoping CET, Taylor, and McGillis bring this element to the GRIZ this upcoming season.

Another key to next season will be someone becoming the inside scoring force that Strait was. I am hoping Qvale and Selvig work alot on inside scoring in the offseason. If not, we will have to rely on Hasquet to sacrifice his overall game to do this. We can also try taking a page out of Huse's book in posting up our 2's and 3's in mismatches. In my opinion, I wish more coaches posted up perimeter players in mismatches. Why in the hell not post up CET or Taylor on Dominguez and clear out the paint when PSU is in man defense?

For security reasons, I hope the GRIZ recruit one true inside scorer, a quick penetrating defensive nightmare pg, and a versatile athletic penetrating 3.

I also would love to see them to find away to get Staudacher 10 3 shots per game. With that, he easily averages 13 plus per game and makes the inside game much easier for our young bigs. If Stauds works on his ball handling, he could be a nightmare to gameplan for.

Here is to hoping all the above come together in the offseason. :thumb:
 
May have posted this elsewhere but in an email with him on something else Tinkle said "We will spread the floor and play more motion next year with our improved skill and athleticism." It will be interesting to see how committed the Griz will be to this.
 
One big plus next year should be their ability to get the ball inside better. It's nice to have a seven-footer on the wing with very good passing skills to feed the ball in. It really makes a difference.
 
the teams that advanced deep into the tournament had great point play and a couple of studs inside, and played exceptional defense. oh, and a winning attitude (read, davidson.)

I will go out on a limb and say the leading scorer for the Griz next
year wil not be Jordo but Stauds..

The last few games he was getting more shots and scoring in the
mid teens.

Now I am not for just casting up threes..but if we play inside out
and run some plays for him (ala Curry) he could get 13 threes a game..he makes 6 of those..that is 18 points..

and how crazy is it to get the ball when the other team is playing
the "foul game" at the end to Cet..get the ball to Stauds since he
shoots 92% from the line.


It seems a long way till next year..the off season additions will be
key to filling the gaps. but right now it looks solid with..

I agree with you on Stauds having a pure and clean shot. He is a great shooter. The problem is that he needs to be wide open and have a lot of time. If they runs plays to get him time and space, he will get his shots. He scores highest against slower less athletic teams if you check his history. He can not do what Jordan can however.
 
One little thing: In addition to being a great shooter, Curry is a great ball handler. He can penetrate and dish, and he is very good off the dribble. I think they’re apples and oranges.
 
I think that they are apples and oranges in the skill area too and their ppg documents that. The main thing that they have in common is minutes played per game...Stauds at 31.7...Curry at 33.1. Yikes
 
In all honesty I believe the Griz success will depend on how well they defend next year as opposed to their O. What impressed me the most about Davidson was how well their players understood their roles and how well they defended and rebounded.

Exactly. Curry can score in any way. NBA range 3, mid-range jumper, reverse layup, fade-away, tear-drop runner, attacking the basket. Staudacher can score in 2 ways: wide open 3 and free throws.
