2009 Schedule

Open letter to the powers that be that create the bball schedule. Make the 2009 griz schedule as hard as you can. I paid $1142 for 2 season tickets this year. I will still buy those tickets even if we lose every single pre-conference game. Our conference and team gets no respect. Look at Gonzaga's schedule or Duke's as that is what you desire the game atmosphere to look like. Try this motto "we will play anyone anywhere" you will be amazed how much better we will be and how foregiving most fans will be. You preach you want us to be the next Gonzaga, what are you waiting for?

With a schedule like that Griz won't have any home games.

The only way we get big name home games if we as fans sell the place out and create a college basketball environment. I would love to see us go on the road for a few major games, and home and homes with mid major top 50 and a few top 100. I think sprinkling in some lesser competition would be good from a learning and confidence factor.

I would like us to go on the road again to the likes of the following WAZZU, Gonzaga, Washington, Colorado, Nebraska, Utah, Cal, Oregon, Iowa, Iowa State, Missouri, Minnesota.

Home and homes with the likes Creighton, Butler, Drake, Oregon State, Wyoming, Idaho, New Mexico or State, Southern Illinois, Any Mid to top level WAC, MWC, or WCC teams.

Home games with the likes of NDSU, SDSU, mid to lower level WCC, Big West, WAC, MWC. Get rid of the lower division games period.

That kind of schedule would be challenging, yet doable with a possibility of winning 50% OOC games.

I vote for mtgrizrule to be our next AD

Seriously that would be a dream job for me. Unfortunately for me I got burned out with school before finishing my education in business and athletic management. AD or SID would be great jobs at any div 1 college.

I would love to see a balance schedule though, starting regionally, then in time when fan support gets where it needs to be bring in some bigger opponents. Also work our way east for a game here and there. I think it would take 3 years of a regional balanced schedule to get this program where I would like to see it. Honestly though, the lower division games in basketball and football have to go. I fairness to the basketball team, this years schedule was pretty solid, but some room for improving.

Scheduling aside, I would love to see the students be given back the east side seats bit by bit year by year. Financially, O'Day and the school cannot afford to just give back all the seats at one time. Start with giving them 1/3 of them right in the middle 1/3. As the environment and student support betters, continue expanding from the middle out until it is all theirs again. There will be a few stubborn supporters not liking this, but I think many would be willing to cooperate in the effort. Besides if they are winning the fan support will be there. In about 3 months we should see what the schedule is like. Lets hope for the best.

Football will always take care of itself with what it has become. I would love a concentrated level by all to bring our basketball status to the best in the BSC and in the running with the Washington schools, and Oregon for regional supremecy.

BTW, I would be happy to take any and all votes. :thumb:

The problem is, it ain't that simple. The reason is, that those teams don't want to play teams like Montana, for a couple of reasons:

1. There's no benefit to them. Why play a team that will lower your RPI, when you can play someone else?

2. They know they might lose. See #1 above. If they are going to schedule a team with a lower RPI, they are going to schedule a team they are pretty certain they can beat. There was an article in the Seattle Times a few years back after Montana beat Stanford, essentially questioning why in the HELL Stanford would take the chance to schedule Montana.

It's easy to say let's go do that (and for the record, I agree with you). But the problem is, you gotta convince the person on the other end of the phone that it's a good idea. I don't think that's all that easy.

There are reasons many teams won't come to Montana to play.
One is that UM doesn't and can't pay a high enough guarantee to come here.

so, I guess if mtgrizrule wants to be an AD, he may have to raise a lot more money to pay teams to come here than UM can afford. I am not so sure it helps a team to play cupcakes at home and the real tough games on the road. It may help the team competitively, but for attracting fans at home games, it just not going to help that much. If you want to increase attendance, you have to bring some of your toughest competition to play at your house. Lady Griz home schedule was pretty weak this past year. Griz had it a little better, but not much.

Griz BB is working on scheduling some pretty attractive opponents. Some of them may require a 2 for 1, meaning the Griz play them away twice in exchange for that school playing at UM once. Until UM starts winning on a consistent basis, that is probably going to be the only way they can get some of these teams on the schedule. I don't have a problem with that, it sure beats the old days of Simon Fraser.

If I could be AD for a day and book the bball OOC I'd have it look like this:

vs Wyoming
@ Gonzaga
@ Washington
vs CS Fullerton
vs NDSU
@ Utah St
@ UC Santa Barbara
vs CS Northridge
vs Southern Utah
@ BYU
vs W. Oregon
vs Cal Poly
@ Minnesota

my dream schedule:

Simon Frazier (exhibition for old times sake)
Carroll College
@Utah State
@ BYU
vs. Gonzaga
vs. Colorado
@ Old Dominion
@ Virginia
vs. Wyoming
vs. Boise State
@UCLA
@Arizona
Idaho
Washington

Our would be happy with 4 wins in that schedule but hope for more and know the team would be ready for anything.

Most everyone seems to be in agreement on the type of 1A teams to play and the balance of the schedule. I am fine with the proposed schedules with one exception, ZERO games against lesser divisions/levels.
