An article I read said 1-AA has had playoffs since 1978, what did our level of play have before that? I'm not that old so...

There was no I-AA before that. Just D-I and D-II

Prior to 1973 NCAA had University Division and College division, with no playoffs. In 1973 University was changed to D-I, and college to D-II and D-III, and D-II and D-III instituted playoffs.

Prior to 1973 the College Division champion was established by playing in one of 4 regional bowl games, then the media picked the champion among the winners of the bowl games.

The Big Sky was a College Division/D-II conference until I-AA was established in 1978.

We (Montana) had the Camillia Bowl. Went in 68 and 69 (I think) after undefeated (or 1 loss seasons)Things went to hell after that. The athleic department got caught up in a major scandal. A half dozen coaches or so were indicted. Don't think their were any conviction. The student government withdrew funding and the program very nearly was scrapped.Jack swarthout changed everything. From about 1948 to about 63 we we were in the Skyline conference Never had a winning season and never won more than 4 games. Then the Big Sky was formed (63 I think) next 4 years MAYBE 8 wins The last year befor Swarthout came we went 1 and 9, the next year 7 and 3.

69 & 70 seasons, undefeated going into the game, but those Griz teams had a lot of JC players, and they were not allowed to play in post season back then. Lost to NDSU both times.

Damn near lost to the cats in one of those years Kalfous (Followed Stenrud) missed a chip shot at the gun to give us the win (granted it was a blizzard)

I'm glad someone remembers better than me

that was a co-championship in '82. crazy that we've won 16 conference championships in the last 19 years, but only 3 in the first 95 years.

It wasn't 'till Panzer came in that sports (of any kind) were a "priority" Up until WW II sports at our level were more of a club sport than anything. In 1948 (or so) the BOR essentially said to deemphasise or better yet eliminate. Only student money could be used to fund no general funds. When the Students voted to eliminate funding for football in the early 70's. it almost went away again.

Funny you should mention NDSU in this thread.

28 Conference Championships
9 National Championships

crazy that we've won 16 conference championships in the last 19 years, but only 3 in the first 95 years.

Part of the reason for that was the teams who were in their conference.

"The team played only schools from Montana until it helped found the Northwest Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NWIAA) in 1902. In addition to Montana, this original Northwest Conference included Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Idaho, and Whitman College. Montana continued to play only the nearest teams. It would not win a game against a conference opponent until a 10-0 win over Washington State 1914.

"In 1915, the Northwest Conference began to become superfluous with the creation of the Pacific Coast Conference which by 1924 already included the five public Northwest Conference schools from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho in addition to California and Stanford. Montana joined the conference in 1924 and would remain until 1949. During this time, Montana would win only 9 conferences games (8 of them against Idaho), and would never play a home game against any California team."

It wasn't 'till Panzer came in that sports (of any kind) were a "priority"

I'm not sure if Panzer had an emphasis on sports, but he oversaw the hiring of Swarthout.

"In December 1966, U of M president Robert T. Pantzer announced that Jack Swarthout, a former quarterback/halfback/end from Montana. Swarthout brought on Jack Elway as an assistant and together they took the Grizzlies from 1-9 to 7-3 the first season. Within two years Swarthout guided the team to back-to-back undefeated regular seasons in 1969 and 1970 and Montana's first Big Sky Conference titles. ...

"Continued success was expected, but a disappointing season in 1971 was followed by a work-study scandal that eventually led to Swarthout's resignation. In 1972, a federal grand jury returned a 32-count indictment charging five university officials and coaches (including Swarthout) with conspiring to illegally use federal-aid money by using some of the funds to pay for fictitious jobs for athletes. Though Swarthout was found innocent, the charges hurt recruiting and the student-body government decided to withdraw financial support for athletic programs. Despite the controversy and resultant performance decline, Swarthout is credited as being the coach that turned Montana into a winning football program."

"From 1964 through 1972, the Camellia Bowl was one of four season-ending bowls (quarterfinals) in the NCAA College Division, the predecessor of Division II (and Division III). There were no semifinals or finals and the NCAA College Division championship was determined by a poll; the system was revised in 1973 with the creation of Division II and its full playoff structure. That year the Camellia Bowl became the Division II Championship game for three years, and after a four-year hiatus, it was the Division I-AA title game in 1980."

The 1915 game versus Syracuse (6-6 tie) was one of the most famous in Griz history. Syracuse was one of the best in the East and may have been invited to the Rose Bowl. I think I read something about intimidation by the local crowd. . . .
