1 Griz & 1 former Griz in trouble

mtgrizrule....when the rules are set, they must be realistic. As a father whose son competed in a major conference, I'm not certain athletes today can be held to such a high standard. Drinking maybe, but fighting and other minor violations, I don't think so.

I wish that were the case, it is not though. As an athlete, at any college, you have to use common sense and walk away from this kind of crap.

So DeShields pled innocent. Cherry has court next week. From what I'm reading/hearing, some 34 year old guy "attacked" Cherry from behind. Cherry defended himself and then a skirmish broke out. Cops came. Cherry was pissed and didn't listen. Got himself tazed and arrested. DeShields decided it would be fun to hollar in the street and got himself arrested. Both could easily get all charges dropped as they weren't the instigators or both could plead guilty as disorderly conduct is nothing. I'm guessing they will dismiss resisting arrest on Cherry because it was the heat of the moment and he didn't try to fight the cops.

The issue with downtown Missoula is when you have ignorant (I'm gonna say it) white people and then bring alcohol and other drugs into the equation you have a recipe for disaster. I've seen it first hand and I'm honestly amazed there aren't more instances of large fights breaking out downtown.

What concerns me though is all the problems with alcohol and our student athletes. 2nd time Cherry is in trouble involving alcohol. Another player gets in trouble the next night because of alcohol. Coleman, Henderson and DeShields all got in trouble because of alcohol. Not to mention all the incidents involving alcohol and our football team. How does the university control this? I have no good answer.

Crap, this is one bad offseason for Wayne too. You locals need to check the local station websites more. I will let you find what more is out there.

The judge did tell Deshields he needs to stay away from liquor, being he is not of age.
More is out there. Who will find it?

Never mind someone posted as I was.

Griz BB has done a great job of not having any bad publicity for years until this latest spree. First Henderson, now Cherry& DeShields' Stox debacle and even Weisner was cited for a loud party. Weisner? I know it sounds naive, but it's hard to even imagine him partying it up. He seems so mellow but, obviously, he is just a typical college kid. His incident is the least concerning, but now 4 out of what 13? guys on the team have been in incidents involving the police in 2-3 months. That is not a good percentage, worse than the football team even.

Just less than 25% of the team. Football wise with 80 players that would be just under 20 players. OW!!!

It is not too difficult to believe DeShields' hollaring exacerbated the situation. He has the biggest mouth in the Big Sky. He is not well-liked around the league. He gets too intense, starts talking crap and Tinks has to replace him to calm him down. He doesn't seem to play as well (or better) when he is really fired up either. He gets flustered and forgets the game-plan and tries to do it all himself. The opposite is usually the case for Cherry and Jamar. When they are intense, they usually play better. DeShields (and to a lesser degree Henderson) was the (Griz) reason for the near-brawl with Weber. Weber had a couple of equally-culpable combatants, but if DeShields would have just shut-up, the Weber guys wouldn't have tried to start anything. Hopefully this is a wake-up call for him, but he (and his supporters) will probably just blame the cops for being racist or evil or blame the other guy (who apparently started the fight) instead of being embarrassed for being involved in a fight at 2am at Stox (while being under-age). His big mouth is the (only) reason he actually got in trouble. Tip for Keron:STFU. Just try it. Nothing good seems to happen to you when you run your mouth on or off the court.

Huh? Coleman too? I didn't hear about him.

I personally object to the demonetization to the Missoula police and sheriff officers. I do and have know quite a few of these fine officers, I will tell you they will go out of there way to cut a person a break. I find this blame the officers mentality kind of like blaming the messenger for bad news.
Mslacat, with all due respect, it is not merely demonization when one has first had first hand experience with the Msla PD that involved blatant lying and other inappropriate behavior by police officers. I will leave it at that.

I have been hearing for a couple of years that neighbors to the basketball players have been complaining to landlords about loud parties with possibly underage kids attending. Mathias Ward moved because it was not his style. The team has been flying under the radar for some time. Now, they will get as much unwanted attention as the football team.

Sadly this item (common sense) appears to have all but disappeared in recent years. :(

This is the image that comes to my mind about the way Keron must have looked when he left Wayne's office.

th

With that man yelling at you from 2 feet, there simply has to be some wind damage.

......

The judge did say something to that effect, but it was a "I am sure you are aware this" statement, but then went on to put as a condition of his bail that he "must stay away from the bars, both inside and the sidewalks outside, in the Front Street area in particular the Stockmans"

This language should be incorporated into each athletic scholarship UM offers.

Don't be surprised if basketball players are no longer renting homes. Have a feeling Wayne is going to lay down the axe hard on the team, before next season begins. Sounds like there are a few too many guys drinking, and not being responsible. Lay down the law Wayne!

you think he'd force them to live in dorms all 4-5 years?

gotta think that would kill the college experience and really hurt recruiting.

I would not wish dorm living on any student, but the house renting can easily be restricted.

[And overall Tinkle has done a heck of a job keeping players out of trouble.

Oh Good Lord.... Cherry, Deshields, Henderson, Coleman... that is a full 33% of the roster that has appeared in court... "heck of a job" indeed....

Ya - but only on a part time basis.... Like when people make ignorant, dismissive statements like "Tinkle has done a heck of a job keeping his players out of trouble" when a full 1/3 of the bench has appeared before "the bench" in recent months....

Someone has to be here to reel you guys in when your Bromance gets carried away and you lose sight of actual facts....
