Massive Update 5-11-23

Here is the best but not only source for the carnage that is the transfer portal.

Going to see a bunch of Grad Transfers this year for players who are using their covid years. Last year saw fewer Grad Transfers than the year before, and total numbers into the portal. NCAA hasn't changed the roster number maxes and as along as those stay the same, we are going to see a bit larger than usual roster crunch in certain programs who recruited as usual.

*** Transfer Rules***
1. Players have 1 free transfer in their collegiate career
2. Grad Transfers have the ability to depart programs free of penalty as a second transfer under specific conditions.
3. NCAA granted 1 year of extra eligibility for players on NCAA rosters in the Covid Shortened Years.
4. Players can remove themselves from the list w/out penalty.
5. The window for transfer portal is 60 days and will close May 11th. Players can apply to be in the portal after that until the end of July, but it requires NCAA permission to do so. After that date, players can leave programs but their movement to new programs is restricted significantly. After that there is a roster freeze and new additions to active rosters are generally prohibited. Kids can enroll in school at a new institution but require NCAA clearance to become eligible.

*** Thread Rules***
1. Players who submit to the portal will be counted, from teams current 2022-23 Rosters.
2. Targets can be self reported (Twitter/IG) or through entities such as VC (Verbal Commits), Jake Leiberman, or other media sources. Offers have to be confirmed by a legitimate media source, including players confirmed Twitter/IG accounts.
3. Focus is on Transfer Portal Players, moving from NCAA programs to other programs. JC and Prep School kids are tracked through the regular recruiting thread.

Don't know who yet, but it looks to me like Weber and UM both will be cutting one or more players. Both schools have commitments that out number the available scholarships. Last I looked UM has 3 commitments and only 1 senior leaving. Weber has two seniors leaving and three commitments. We will likely know who is leaving by the end of next week. I'm sure the players know who is out and who is in. I guess the hope is that everybody has found a home by the time the dust settles. The reality is that many will not.

I see UM is going after former EWU and current Portland guard Mike Meadows who we all probably remember from that stacked Eastern team. Averaged 10 ppg this year and I think would be a big pickup and fit nicely in Martins role! He’s being heavily recruited so far so I’m not sure what our chances are, but he’d be a great get!

Is Martin going somewhere? I thought he still had eligibility left. I thought that the only one exhausting eligibility was Anderson.

I just thought he was very underwhelming and we can use an upgrade. I thought he seriously lacked consistency and whoever the guy is playing the 2 should be averaging double figures. I think he’s a nice kid and a decent 3 point shooter, but we need more production out of him!

Let the chaos commence.

The portal-transfer period is now open and will be for the next 60 days or so.

So far close to a 100 players have had their names submitted to the database. Mostly players from the eastern time zone schools.

No one of note so far.

Our First Big Sky Conference player into the portal:

PF-Jamel Melvin (6'11'' 205) Soph. Maclean, VA (Potomac School)- Northern Colorado (8th in minutes/gp)

and a few minutes later
SG- Dawson Mohr (6'3 195) Freshman.-Northern Colorado (12th in minutes/GP)

and then a few minutes later

PF- Bryce Kennedy (6'7'' 200) Sophomore- Northern Colorado. (11th in minutes/GP)

All bottom of the rotation guys.

I am too! I think he’s a super nice kid, but I said this on Friday that for a starting shooting guard, we were getting a serious lack of production from him. You need to have a good backcourt if you wanna go anywhere, and he just wasn’t scoring enough to get it done as a starter.

I wish Martin the best, and hope he lands at a school closer to home! Now let’s go get Mike Meadows from Portland!

With ISU's transfering players and six departing seniors, ISU will have at least 9 new players for next season. UNCo will be replacing 5 or 6. Sac will be doing something similar.

With all of the turnover in the bottom 6 teams of our league, it looks to me like the top 4 programs will be right back there next year. Unless, of course, if some of those bottom 6 get some really good transfers. Anything can, and usually does, happen. :)

Today's participants:
Keith Haymaon SF (NAU)
Yousif Salih PG (UI)
Craig Holley PG (SS)
Teiano Hardee SG (SS)
J.J. Louden PG (WSU)

Number of players into the portal.

Idaho State 3
Northern Colorado 2
Sac State 2
Idaho 1
Montana 1
NAU 1
Weber State

Added Cameron Wilbon. Late add to the portal last night. Senior with a Covid Year remaining. Played in all 32 games, started most and averaged about 10 ppg.

Fairly consistent player the past two years for Sac State.

Of note:

Speaking of the UW dumpster fire...two recruits that hit the portal today are guys that UM showed some interest in when they were HS kids.

PG PJ Fuller (6'4'' 200) Junior 2E. Offered in high school. From Seattle. Started 17 games this year. Big Physical guard.
PF Jackson Grant (6'10) Sophomore 2E. Interest in high school. From Seattle. PF with range. Limited time at Washington. Very long.

Yes, PLEASE!

Keith Dinwiddie into the portal. Thought this was a huge pickup for Weber State last spring from San Diego State. Clearly wasn't a good fit. Had a Montana offer out of high school. Not sure if there is interest here this time around.

We all thought the same thing. We probably did him a disservice by trying to mold him into a PG/playmaker. He is really best suited to be a 2 guard. The problem is that most of the better 2 guards in our league are much taller than he is, and although he is quite athletic, he just couldn't guard them. While he was in the main rotation, teams would just post him up and score easily on him. IMHO, he needs to find a team that can play him in a fashion that will help him be successful.

He is a good young man, a good student, a high level athlete for his size, and will be an asset to the right team. This transfer isn't shocking news to any of us in Weberville.

I fully expect that this is the last one of our's to be transfering out. We expect one to be transfering in. :thumb:

Old runner. Your quote, IMHO, he needs to find a team that can play him in a fashion that will help him be successful.
IMHO. Most players would love that. Unfortunately, finding a coach to do that is the problem, they seem to recruit kids for one position and then play them at another. The kids are then disappointed and are unable to play to their potential.
