Explanation of the 2022 Season?

grizghost said:
...does there really have to be an explanation...both Choate and Vigen have sliced and diced
him 4 times and probably will this year too...young Montana recruits that have been to both
camps are saying the Cats are the happening place....hoping for the big turn around year but I
just don't see that coming yet! ...its probably best he just keeps his mouth shut!

Who has Choate and Vigen sliced and diced 4 times?

With Bradford as DC and Tim in the room, the Griz will have answers on defense they did not have last year.
I hope you are right but we will be missing 3 All Americans, plus Welnel, McGourin, Todd and veteran back ups in Dawson, Matthews, and Alford. That's a lot to replace.

I know that college guys improve each year and lots of guys just need a chance to show what they can do so I'm not pessimistic but......in the cliche "next man up", there is a reason that player was "the next man" and not "the man".

Oh, attendance issues at Missoula are absolutely problematic. I just found it funny that he said that was what the kids that attend the football camps are saying. I don't think anyone in that generation ever says "happening place." That's slang from the 60's and 70's, I think.

They do think bozo is groovy tho.

Griz have some solid guys returning and have added a few promising transfers. The redshirt frosh Genatone, Walton and Ramos will contribute this year. Nash Fouch and Kale Edwards will be two players I think will shine big time this year. I think Fouch is just an excellent football player.

I agree with everything you are saying. I'm just tempering my expectations especially early season because it's going to be a steep learning curve.

The defense was on the field for nearly a full game more the offense last season. A consistent offense will take some pressure off a defense that was dinged and worn down at the end of last season. There’s a lot to replace and let’s hope a bunch in reserve to step into those spots and produce.

If there is one thing that the youth of this state are doing, it is most definitely saying that somewhere is "the happening place."

Haha! I love it when people seriously say, “people are saying…”

Reminds me of talking with my dad on the phone about the long term forecast in September.

“Yep, they’re saying it’s gonna be a mild winter.”
“Who are they?”
“Oh, those two guys out of [town].”
“Uh huh.”

Drill down far enough, and “they” turn out to be his golf buddies.

I don't remember him actually saying "unacceptable", but he did say

This year, Haslam noted, “There’s certainly a level of urgency and anxiety to, you know … ‘Let’s get back to those dominant days.’”

There’s no reason to sugarcoat it: In 2022-23 the Griz did not meet expectations. Theirs or anyone else’s.

Haslam himself called it “a mediocre-to-good year.”

But I don't think this was only about football.

As I thought. Haslam didn’t say “unacceptable”. He said “didn’t meet expectations.” True. Everyone agrees that the season didn’t meet expectations and was disappointing.

Correct, the mediocre to good year was not about just football.

Haslam said it was unacceptable by not offering BH an extension. He'll fire him this year if it's anything like last year.

Is this a factual statement…..meaning actual real truth as opposed to when you said:

“Season tickets were waaaaay down and the UM would be suffering a huge financial hit because of it”….only to find out they have already renewed almost 19k!!

Or when you said

“You would bet MTHoops 5k that the Cats would beat the Griz this year by an even higher score than last year”…..only to walk backwards on that bet completely and pretend it never happened

Or when you said

“Your 7 kids built a rocket ship and landed on the moon because they are the smartest and bestest kids in the entire universe and no one else could possibly compare”

Forgive me if I find every, single, one of your posts full of actual shit.

Nope, Haslam didn’t. Bobby didn’t want any extension yet.

He also said we have multiple guys on our team right now who aren't even good enough to play frontier conference football, but is too chicken shit to say who he thinks they are.

Agreed on all points raised above…but until we get meaningful transfers in at CB…and preferably a DL or two…I’ll be tempering my expectations as well.

Edit: and now after reading the Gubner thread and being reminded of Harris and Ramos, I’m less concerned about DL than I was. But CB is still a concern and I’m sure they’re scouring the portal and JUCO’s…

...who said " people are saying " the point was many Montana recruits are favoring Vigen's
program rather then UM like in the past....I hope this changes but there seems to be a generational
dis-connect! I think Bobby is a good coach but what he did 10 years ago is not working
in the present......the fact is Vigen program seems to be connecting with upcoming Montana
players...someone please explain why...at the moment the Cats have the upper hand...

Who's saying Cats are doing better than Griz at in-state recruiting. Nobody is saying that to me, including the coaches.

Looking at the Griz/Cat rosters, from the Game Notes on the MSU website, it looks like the Cats had 5 MT starters and 1 MT ST specialist.

Griz had 6 MT starters (not including Bergen) and 2 MT ST specialists.

Feel free to correct me if I goofed up on the stats.

I didn't count up the rosters.

My explanation to you is that the Cats don't have the upper hand on MT players.

Kent Haslam - August 24th 2021 -

On what the bar should be for Griz football:

Competing for conference championships, national titles every year. We’ve set that bar and that’s what I’ve always viewed Montana football as is championships. I think we’re on our way. The Big Sky has changed a lot, and you can point and say we’re different and we’re spread out and we don’t play everybody, but you know what, it is what it is, you got to win, and you got to win championships. We know that. We have big scoreboards for a reason: we keep score.”

It's not as if those haven't been the goals since Don Read's team broke through and won it all. Right?

I have no doubt that but bobby really believe that nothing about the BSC had changed since his departure, other than Montana wasn't dominating. Which begets RTD and not so much of that - fact. I'm hoping not to see any mention of RTD this season.

By way of comparison, you might also recall Stitt's marketing slogan, Fight-Unite-Win. Everything looks promising when you put it on a poster. Doesn't it? That was born of having to hire consultants to teach him how to handle college kids when members of the team quit on him in season two. Year three ends and he gets run off, by the boosters. Haslam had already spoken to him about extending, Stitt has long maintained. As we've already learned, Haslam can say whatever he likes. The boosters aren't going run but bobby off regardless of how this season plays out. If he wins, he's the hero, fulfilling expectations. Lose, and it will be a whole lot of something else that got in the way. Not sure why this is so difficult to understand.
