This article ought to have some influence on those in academia rather than sit and wait for the axe to fall...

https://www.denverpost.com/2020/07/06/students-college-federal-aid-coronavirus/

I mean, this is reality:

https://www.denverpost.com/2020/07/05/higher-education-budget-cuts-colorado-coronavirus-recession/
And the pot tax was to cover all this....

I guess Willie's special blend is doing really well here. But, his accountant has him in trouble with the IRS.

Again or still?

He's an outlaw you know. Waylon and Johnny are dead so I guess there's not much for old farts to look up to anymore.

This is going to hurt. (I suppose my bi-annual physicals will have different doctors or nurse practitioners in the near future too?). What is this going to do to our professor's employment data nationally?

Hopefully many colleges will find ways around this. Berkeley already has several options they're looking into (research credit courses that are in person, grad student run distanced in-person 1-credit courses in the major auditoriums, etc.).

Half a dozen years ago the University of Washington caught hell because 96 percent of their freshman class was comprised of nonresidents. Georgia Tech is always over 75 percent nonresident but it's only been a few years since they expanded their undergraduate enrollment over 10k.

96? Holy hell. U of Colorado tends to hover right around 45%, I think, and I remember once upon a time thinking that was high.

What in the hell is wrong with people? If a school is only offering courses online, what is the problem with pulling their educational visa and making them go back where they're from? I mean, Christ, they're taking online courses only. All the transplants to Montana bought the bumper stickers as soon as they got here "Welcome to Montana. Now go home." right after they tried to turn the area they moved to into the place they escaped from. Damn man!

This is going to get extremely interesting. The response toward the end of the article about the University of Phoenix is going to shake up the stuffed shirt schools in the event they win.

Bummer for her. I'd expect Simpson to be open for another 5yrs max.

I lived in Des Moines for the past 16yrs, Simpson is a small, private and expensive college just south of town. Lots of layoffs in the past 2yrs, lots of competition in Iowa. If I remember correctly Iowa, Iowa State and Uni as the majors. Probably another 4-6 regional community college types and I'd bet between 12-15 private colleges, all fighting for the big $$ with no discernible advantages.

In Monday’s announcement, Simpson College President Marsha Kelliher touted Cole’s work at UM, saying “her efforts have led to double-digit enrollment and retention growth, friend- and fund-raising, a steep increase in brand equity for her institutions and reinvigorated brands and placement in the competitive landscape of higher education.”

Wut?

I just posted this in a different thread. Can you believe Harvard and MIT would have that much sway...along with the other 100 or so schools that piled on?

Ah, missed your post in the other thread. Just glad that ended relatively swiftly.

I'm concerned for the public schools. There was already a teacher, sub, and staff shortage before all of this. Plus, we don't have the technology to deliver decent online remote instruction on a national level. At least Montana isn't top heavy administatively with ~420 school districts...

I think a lot of that 33% increase can be attributed to signing on to the Common App program. Much easier for students to apply, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. As I said, UM should have a good projection of overall enrollment as well as new freshman enrollment by looking at all of the other metrics out there. I haven't seen any of those numbers released at this point.

If I were to predict, I’d say all 4 year colleges in the state will be down in enrollment.

What's your basis for thinking "a lot" of the 33% is attributable to a new common app program? If you just made this up, don't bother to respond.

Freshman fall registration dives. It will be interesting to see how total enrollment holds up. (https://missoulian.com/news/local/um-fall-enrollment-holds-overall-freshman-registration-dives/article_b8263c57-130d-5d8a-b377-d72cbf87ea9a.html)

On the enrollment management end of things, in the past few months UM has lost their Executive Vice President, their Vice President for Enrollment and Communications, as well as their Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management and Financial Aid.

I haven't heard if any of those positions have been filled.

Who did you think was feeding me my info? I've lost most of my sources. Bodnar is the only one left in this area.

From the article:

"MSU reported a rise in out-of-state applicants of 5% for fall 2020, up to 5,089 in 2020 from 4,842 at the same time in 2019. In-state registrations at MSU are down more than 4%, sitting at 6,993 in 2020, compared to 7,302 in 2019."
