Griz Basketball by the #'s "History of the Silverbacks"

Took some time to put together a list of the best Montana Grizzly players based on the number they wore.

-I've been watching UM Basketball since the late 70's and have tried to pick the best at each number. However it is not a perfect science and with the older players Im just going off stats but that really not fair as the game changed so much over the decades
-- When I though players were real similar I added to the number. IE #10 has 3 players listed.
--- Would like some input on the older players.
---- Can anyone find a great UM player that used Number 13, 21, 35, 43, 45 & 55?
----Or any old oddball numbers like #8 & #6
----- Basketball now does not use any numbers over 55 or that end in 6,7,8, or 9.

*= In the University of Montana Basketball Hall of Fame or UM HOF.

It should be noted that Martin Breunig only wore jersey number 50 during his redshirt year and never actually on the court to the best of my knowledge. Unless I’m mistaken he wore 12 for his entire playing time at UM.

I played frosh BB with Ray Lucian at UM. Very fast and a truly good person. Absolutely belongs on Payton's list.

I didn't realize you played hoops. Cool.

Terrific list by Payton. Wow.

You are missing IMHO:
Rod Brandon
Craig Henkel
Craig Zanon
Craig Larson

What is this, Craigslist?

No matter their number, I'd like to nominate all players who endured Craig Hall.

#'s 20 and 42 should be retired. I'll never understand why they're not.

These two are heads, shoulders and professional careers ahead of the rest.

Two were for football.

Why not basketball?

What are we going to do, honor them eventually, posthumously?

Sheesh!

I see a couple all-time UM greats wore #7......Naseby Rhinehart Sr. and Zip Rhoades. Both UM Basketball Hall of Famers and ambassadors for the University. I'm proud to have met and visited with both of them.

Didn't see the other Rhodes (PR's guy) on any of the lists.

Good call, Mouse. Zip has got to be on that list somewhere.

And how about Russ Sheriff from Helena? I believe he was the next year after the Fabulous Frosh. At least that's what my grandfather told me.
