More details to come but I knew you needed to know how the game went. Our MIGHTY BUCS are in the final 4 and will host Northgate, THE winner is off to the GEORGIA DOME!!!!!!!!!!!

The Bucs have had to overcome their best player 1500 yard rusher Halimon out for the year played just 2 plays in RD 1. 3rd qtr of the sweet 16 they lost their Left Guard. In practice before the Houston County game their best WR Pines rolled an ankle and is lost for the year. Yet the most Brilliantly coached team has perservered and made it to the final 4. One game at a time first up Northgate comes to Allatoona with a trip to the Georgia Dome on the line. GO ALLATOONA!!!!!!

ACWORTH — When running back Russell Halimon suffered a season-ending ACL injury two weeks ago, Allatoona needed someone to step up.

That turned out to be quarterback Brandon Rainey, who ran for seven touchdowns Friday night as the Buccaneers survived for a 59-47 win over Houston County in the Class AAAAA state quarterfinals.

Rainey’s seventh and final touchdown came from 37 yards out with just over a minute left, ending Houston County’s fierce rally attempt and giving Allatoona its second-highest point total in team history.

In all, Rainey ran for 115 yards on 20 carries, while going 9-of-17 through the air for 170 yards.

In the semifinals for the second straight season, Allatoona (12-1) will host Northgate, which beat Kell 34-21 to prevent an all-Cobb matchup in the final four. Last year, the Buccaneers lost to Northside-Warner Robins in the semifinals, but this time, they will have the benefit of playing at home.

“We overcame adversity, and Rainey wouldn’t let us lose this game,” Allatoona coach Gary Varner said of the 6-foot-1, 184-pound senior, who committed to The Citadel earlier in the week. “Every game from the beginning of the season until now, he’s gotten better. I can’t say enough.”

Rainey’s seven rushing touchdowns were one short of the county record set by Pebblebrook’s Thomas Flowers in 2001 and Hillgrove’s Sonny Harris last season. The state record is 10.

There were seven lead changes before Allatoona began to take control late in the third quarter. The turning point came when Casey Smith forced a fumble that the Buccaneers recovered, shortly after Rainey’s fourth touchdown, from 2 yards out for a 31-27 lead.

Allatoona, however, was sloppy to start its ensuing drive at the tail end of the third quarter. Rainey was tackled for back-to-back losses and then fumbled on third-and-16, only to have Brandon Archibald to recover it for a 9-yard gain. Facing fourth-and-7, Allatoona was gifted with an offside penalty, giving it a fourth-and-2 that Archibald converted with a 6-yard run.

Allatoona continued driving the ball and a 13-yard pass from Rainey to Brady Eeles put the Buccaneers on the Houston County 8. Rainey scored his fifth rushing touchdown two plays later, for an 11-point lead with 10:06 left to play.

Then, Allatoona’s special teams stepped up by blocking its second punt of the game, and Tate Tatum scooped it up for a 25-yard touchdown — the only Bucs touchdown not scored by Rainey.

A 45-27 lead with 8:01 remaining appeared safe based on how Allatoona was playing in the fourth quarter, but Houston County (11-2) continued to fight back.

Quarterback Jake Fromm, who threw for 351 yards, hit Amari Colbert for a 62-yarder on the Bears’ next drive, and they trimmed Allatoona’s lead two plays later on a 9-yard run by Christopher Brinson, who finished with 141 yards on 17 carries.

Allatoona then fumbled on the first play of its next drive, when it tried to burn clock with 4:49 remaining.

Fromm kept Houston County alive on its next drive by converting a fourth-and-20 with a 21-yard pass to Jaylen Searcy. Two plays later, Fromm hit Darion Anderson for a 31-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 52-47 with 3:19 left to play.

Allatoona then attempted to run out the clock on its next drive and managed a first down, forcing Houston County to burn the rest of its timeouts to stop the clock. With just over a minute to play, Rainey put the game out of reach with his 33-yard touchdown burst.

“It was a big relief,” Rainey said. “Our offensive line and our ‘D’ fought all game long — and our (running) backs — and to seal the deal with that was nice. It was sweet.”

Archibald and Charles Anderson got the majority of reps at running back, combining for 100 yards on 19 carries.

Allatoona is loving life at Cobb Energy/Buccaneer Stadium.

The Buccaneers are 43-7 on their home field since the program’s inception in 2008. Since becoming eligible for the state playoffs in 2010, they’ve only had three home losses.

Allatoona has won 16 straight games at home and hasn’t lost there in more than two years.

Its latest home victory, a 59-47 victory Friday night over Houston County in the state quarterfinals, was arguably the most memorable.

Not only did quarterback Brandon Rainey score seven rushing touchdowns in that game, but many touted Houston County a state contender behind Alabama-bound quarterback Jake Fromm.

“The team that came in is a real good football team,” Allatoona coach Gary Varner said of Houston County. “A lot of people in the classification said they were favored so it was a great win for our kids.”

The Buccaneers (12-1) will spend this week getting ready for what they hope is their 17th straight win at home when Northgate (12-1) visits for a Class AAAAA state semifinal matchup Friday. Allatoona will be playing its second state semifinal in as many years, but its first in Acworth.

The Georgia High School Association requires state semifinal hosts have enough space to seat 4,000 or they may be forced to play at a larger venue. Bucs athletic director Benji Morrell said Cobb Energy/Buccaneer Stadium is big enough and will have extra seating available in case of overflow.

“It’s been great to stay home during the whole playoff run,” Morrell said. “The coaches do a great job, the players have done a great job. I can’t say enough about what those coaches, parents and kids have done to make this an elite program in a short span.”

Allatoona won Friday with a depleted lineup. The Buccaneers lost marquee running back Russell Halimon for the season with an ACL injury after he rushed for 1,543 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Receiver Michael Pynes rolled his ankle at Thursday’s practice and didn’t play, and lineman Brooks Walper did the same during the game and didn’t return.

Varner said Pynes and Walper are questionable for Friday’s game.

Without Halimon, Charles Anderson and Brandon Archibald are splitting duties in the backfield, and both combined for 100 yards on 19 total carries against Houston County. Rainey also helped Allatoona’s ground game against the Bears with 115 yards on 20 carries.

After trading leads with Houston County for the first three quarters, the Buccaneers focused on their ground game after scoring late in the third quarter to take a 31-27 lead. They also got help on special teams when Tate Tatum scooped up a blocked punt and returned it for a touchdown.

“In the fourth quarter, we started running the ball consistently,” Varner said. “That’s when things changed for us. We got back to running the ball and the (offensive) line started taking over the game a little bit.”

STATE TITLE TIME !!!!!!

The first year we were eligible for the playoffs, (coach) Gary (Varner) told the kids we we’re going to the (Georgia) Dome,” Morrell said.

Allatoona surprised everyone and made the playoffs. Though the Buccaneers lost to St. Pius X in the first round, the foundation had been put in place.

“Gary told the kids after that game that this was the starting block to winning a state championship,” Morrell said.

Since then, Allatoona has only added to the foundation.

In 2011, it advanced to the Class AAA quarterfinals. Allatoona then made it back to the quarters the following season, albeit in Class AAAAA. After a 7-4 season in 2013, the Buccaneers answered by going 13-1 last fall and making their first Class AAAAA semifinal.

Now, with their 28-7 win over Northgate on Friday, Allatoona will finally get to play in the Georgia Dome, facing Glynn Academy for the Class AAAAA state championship next week.

“It’s been unbelievable,” Morrell said. “When we opened the school in 2008, Gary was the first guy on my list (to interview for the head-coaching job). And we knew he would get in there and roll up his sleeves.”

While the building process has led Allatoona to the edge of the Cobb County School District’s first football state championship, Varner has not done it alone. He built a coaching staff to last, one that would build a program that will last.

Seven coaches on the sidelines Friday night — defensive coordinator Troy Peterson, David Cintron (defensive backs), Barry Cox (quarterbacks), Brett Hubinger (defensive line), Mike Dennison (offensive line), Jeremy Anderson (receivers) and Erik Fridborg (kickers) — have been with Varner since the school bought its first football.

“It’s been an eight-year process,” said Varner, who was the offensive coordinator on Roswell’s 2006 state championship team. “You had to have good players, and you had to get a little lucky, but we’ve been together through it all.”

This may be the best coaching job of them all.

Allatoona has been without 1,500-yard running back Russell Halimon, who tore his ACL on his second carry of the playoffs, but backup running backs Brandon Archibald and Charles Anderson have stepped in and not missed a beat. The same can be said about players on the offensive line and at receiver and tight end, too.

Defensively, the Buccaneers swarm to the football. They held Northgate’s 1,600-yard back, Ton Evans, to 57 yards, intercepted quarterback Kyle McClaren three times and held the Vikings to only 215 total yards. Most of that was in the final moments, when the game was already decided.

It was a very businesslike win for a no-nonsense, businesslike team.

“It’s unfinished business,” senior defensive lineman Allen Johnson said, referring to last year’s semifinal loss to Northside-Warner Robins. “We got ready for this by putting in hours and hours of work and running the same play over and over again. We did it so much the coaches were even getting tired of it.”

In his next breath, Johnson said Friday’s postgame celebration was the only party the Buccaneers would have before next week’s championship game.

“We’ll be back in here (today) looking at film for hours and hours,” Johnson said.

It makes sense, as Allatoona still has one building block to put in place to finish its house. In six days, the Buccaneers get to see if they can pour that cement in the state title game.

ACWORTH — After rushing for a team-record seven touchdowns last week, Allatoona quarterback Brandon Rainey added to his growing playoff total Friday.

Rainey scored twice more on the ground and once through the air in leading the Buccaneers to a convincing 28-7 victory over Northgate in the Class AAAAA state semifinals at Cobb Energy/Buccaneer Stadium.

Allatoona (13-1) scored on its first three possessions and led 21-0 early in the second quarter.

The win propelled the Buccaneers into the state championship game for the first time, and provided redemption for last year’s semifinal loss to Northside-Warner Robins.

Allatoona will face Glynn Academy — and former longtime Walton coach Rocky Hidalgo — for the title next Friday night at the Georgia Dome.

“This is big coming off of what happened last year,” said Allatoona coach Gary Varner, who was an assistant on Roswell’s 2006 championship team before being hired to launch the Buccaneers’ program one year later. “There are a lot of different kids on this team compared to last. That senior class was able to lead that group, and this senior class led them one step further.

“This is great for the kids and for the community, especially after what they’ve been through the last couple of months. To get this far and play for a state championship is a blessing.”

Northgate (11-2), appearing in the semifinals for the first time, entered the game with five shutouts and had limited its opponents to an average of 8.8 points per game. The Vikings were just as dangerous offensively, scoring 40 points per game.

Neither of those numbers were able to stand against Allatoona.

The Buccaneers totaled 235 yards in the first quarter, compared to 17 for the Vikings, and built a 14-0 advantage.

Jalen Parrish and Charles Anderson moved the ball 59 yards on Allatoona’s first two plays from scrimmage, setting the tone. A 21-yard pass on third down from Brandon Rainey to Brady Eeles set up the Buccaneers inside the Northgate 5, and Rainey rushed in from 1-yard out for a 7-0 lead.

Allatoona’s defense forced a second three-and-out on Northgate’s second possession. Three plays later, Rainey connected with Turner Cockrell on a 93-yard touchdown pass for the 14-0 advantage with 2:50 left in the period.

Cockrell beat his defender at the 35, and the Northgate player couldn’t make the tackle, allowing Cockrell to race downfield for the remaining 65 yards.

Danny Tesler’s interception of Kyle McLaren’s on Northgate’s next drive gave Allatoona possession at its own 39. Rainey, who completed a 38-yard pass to Derrand Garrett to get inside the Vikings’ 10, then capped a seven-play drive with a 1-yard run and a 21-0 lead that stood until halftime.

“I was surprised we got that big lead so quickly,” Varner said. “I knew their defense was good. We got up on them at the break, and that kind of changed everything.”

Rainey completed his only three pass attempts in the first half for 152 yards as Allatoona outgained Northgate 250-57.

“Getting that first-half lead wasn’t easy,” said Rainey, a Citadel commitment. “(Northgate) played smash-mouth football. Our line did a great job, and our backs have just been running behind them great all year. We worked hard this week in the weight room and on the field to get this win (Friday).

Allatoona’s margin grew to 28-0 with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Rainey found Eeles for a 29-yard reception, and Anderson, who had a 16-yard run earlier in the drive, ran 14 yards for a 28-point lead.

Northgate finally got on the board on the ensuing possession as McLaren tossed a 6-yard pass to Ray Kamari with 9:38 left.

Treamon Perkins’ interception — the third on the night for Allatoona —sealed the win for the Buccaneers with 1:10 remaining.

“The extra possessions from the interceptions helped,” Varner said. “We were able to capitalize from that.”

Allatoona suffered a scare, however, when Cockrell went down with an apparent ankle injury, putting his availability for the championship game in doubt.

Anderson and Brandon Archibald combined for 138 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. Rainey was 6-for-9 for 212 yards.

When Allatoona High School opened in 2008 they started the Buccaneers football program. Two years later when the Bucs played their first varsity season, Coach Gary Varner’s team made the state playoffs and finished with an 8-3 record. In the five seasons since, Allatoona has had two quarter-final finishes, a semi-final finish last season and now here in 2015 will play Glynn Academy for the GHSA AAAAA State Championship Friday night 8:00 p.m. on GPB. That’s what you call instant success. In six years of varsity football the Buccaneers are 64-12.

It’s taken Glynn Academy a little longer. The Brunswick school didn’t start playing football until 125 yearsafter it opened. Glynn Academy is the sixth oldest school in the United States and second oldest in the south. The school was chartered by an act of the General Assembly on February 1, 1788. That was not only long before there was a Georgia Dome but long before there was an Atlanta to build it in.

With probably the coolest nickname in Georgia High School Football…I challenge you to convince me there’s something cooler than Red Terrors…Glynn Academy started playing football in 1913. Success did not soon follow. GA had some good teams back in the leather-helmet days but since the state playoff era began in Georgia in 1948, the Red Terrors have one state championship in 1964. Until last season Glynn Academy had not advanced beyond two rounds of playoffs in 49 years. The Red Terrors still haven’t won a region championship since 1972 and arrive at the Georgia Dome as the #2 seed out of Region 3-AAAAA.

There are two names you need to know when you watch the AAAAA State Championship Game on GPB. Rocky Hidalgo and Deejay Dallas. Rocky is the head coach who left Walton for the Georgia coast and turned this forgotten program into a state championship contender.

Coach Hidalgo led Walton to the 2011 State Championship Game and now four years later he’s got the Red Terrors (I just like saying it) playing in the Finals. What he did at Walton was great. But it is Walton and one of the top high schools in the country. You have resources there. What he’s done at GA is phenomenal and cements him as one of the best coaches in the state. He says one of the great things about Glynn Academy is the support the program gets from all walks of life…from those who live on the beach at Sea Island…to those who have significantly less.

Deejay Dallas is the other name to know. He’s the 247 Sports Composite three-star junior athlete committed to Georgia that Coach Hidalgo decided to stick at quarterback after the Red Terrors (I said it again) were shut-out by Coffee 22-0 and were 2-2 on the season. Glynn Academy has won 10 straight games since. The question isn’t what does Deejay do? The question is what doesn’t he do?

The story for Allatoona is a good one too. Coach Varner was in the Navy working on nuclear reactors on a cruiser when he decided five years of service was enough and wanted to coach high school football. He landed as an assistant at Pebblebrook and then at start-up Kell (where a lot of what he learned he would later apply at Allatoona). From there he became the OC at Roswell working for Tim McFarlin when the Hornets were 2006 state co-champions. As fate would have it, McFarlin’s Blessed Trinity will be on the field Friday playing for the AAA State Title Game right before Varner’s Buccaneers take the field for the AAAAA Final.

The young Buccaneers program boasts its first two Division-1 prospects this season but neither one may play in this game. We know that three-star RB Russell Halimon, who’s committed to Arizona, won’t play. He unfortunately tore his ACL in Allatoona’s first round playoff win. The Bucs’ three-star TE Turner Cockrell, who is committed to Vandy, injured his ankle badly last week in the semi-finals vs. Northgate and he might not be able to play. Despite all that, the Bucs are still standing and arrive with a 13-game winning streak.

So we’ll have a fun AAAAA Final. New storylines. New champion. And dreams will be realized…no matter how long…or short…they have been in the making.
