Missoulian Story about Hawkins Mann... UM's first Verbal commit.

If the Montana Grizzlies’ first spring football scrimmage seemed a little early, the crowd was at least bolstered by 50 to 100 high school kids.

Then one of them committed to the Griz Saturday: Hawkins Mann, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound defensive end/linebacker from Borah High in Boise, Idaho.

If Borah High sounds familiar, that’s where former Griz linebacker and current Dallas Cowboy Caleb McSurdy played his high school ball. Vince Mann, Hawkins’ dad, coached McSurdy and is now Borah’s athletic director.

Now Hawkins Mann is the first commit for the Grizzlies’ 2014 signing class.

“It just was the right fit,” said Mann, who was in Missoula for the weekend. “I went out for junior day and checked it out and it just felt like the right place for me. It felt like home.”

“Junior days,” where prospective students and student-athletes are invited for informal visits (at their own expense), have become a major recruiting tool for the Division I Bowl Subdivision schools. The University of Texas is a noted fore-runner.

In the effort to stay apace of the recruiting battle, it was a matter of time before junior day hit UM’s spring drills. The practice dates back to Bobby Hauck’s days as coach.

But while it’s not uncommon for UM to collect a couple commitments during its summer camp, getting one this early is unique.

Mann was an all-state defensive lineman for Class 5A in Idaho. Playing what he called a hybrid outside backer/defensive end, he had 47 tackles, including 4.5 sacks, as a junior for the 7-3 Lions.

“They’d heard about me and came and watched a game when they were able to,” said Mann. “And they invited me to junior days. That’s it. They were very nice. The coaching staff does an awesome job. Junior day was a blast.

“I just came here and instantly felt a connection.”

Mann said he one other offer, from Army, and had drawn interest from Boise State, Idaho, Air Force, Montana State and Stanford.

But I would be stunned if Disley from Bozeman HS has not be offered a scolly. He was co-defensive AA POY as a junior. He plays DE And is a beast at TE:

This kid is very fast for as big as he is. He would be a great get for the Griz!

Also pretty sure that Grant Collins LB and Will Weyer QB from Bozeman were also offered. And heard Connor Sullivan from Ennis was offered also but verbaled to the Cats so I dont know if we still have an offer to him or not.
