I'm gonna say it again........ how in hell does Southern Utah recruit minority BB basketball players to Cedar City??? I'm very serious. Have you ever been there? It is perhaps the most homogenized small city in the country. There is no night life, no downtown scene, and almost no diversity!

Secondly, how has a relatively new Bobcat head coach recruit well enough to have the Sky coaches give them a higher pre-season ranking than the Griz? What has happened to our recruiting? How many years has it been since we were ranked lower than #2 in the Sky going into a season?

I think that’s appropriate considering how last year went for us. I could see any of the top 4 winning the conference as all of those teams are very veteran and returning a lot of guys.

In my opinion style of play. They play pretty free and fast, and probably sell that to guys in the portal. If you look at SUU's roster they've got 7 guys who transferred from other D1 schools. Guys like Jones and Knight really get to play to their strengths and are allowed a good amount of freedom. It honestly seems like a Last Chance U type of program for a lot of guys....a shitty town in Utah but where guys can get an opportunity to a play a bigger role. I was shocked that guys like Knight, Jones, or Marin didn't hit the transfer portal after having great seasons. How could you want to stay in Cedar City if you don't have to??? haha

I think their coach also wins guys over by letting them do weird sh!t that most coaches wouldn't stand for. You had Knight dying his hair red and multiple guys wearing two different shoes...Idk it would seem with all those transfers it would be hard to get everyone on the same team but they seemed pretty bought in last year based off their success.

You have a point on style-of-play. These kids today want to play fast-paced, and want to shoot threes. Who would want to play in a system where the average points generated in a typical games is fewer than 60?

For me, I don't give a rip what color a player's hair is, or what style of shoes he wears. I am from the Al Davis school of thought........ "Just win, baby!"

I think you are looking at the wrong issues here. SUU is getting guys that many other coaches would not touch. They are getting guys who have to be baby sat in order to keep them out of jail and in the classroom. These kids are looking at SUU as a place of last resort. They also know that going to a small community, with little to do, is what they may need to get over some of the problems they are having. UM could probably get those kids as well, but I don't think your coach or community wants them. Players like winning. In SUU, these guys have a coach who accepts them and a community who like winning more than having a safe community. SUU has become the place for second and third chances.

The SUU BB coach is a Jerry Tarkanian disciple. Playing ball is the only thing on his mind, when it comes to recruiting. You simply are not going to get a good student, good citizen, good player to Cedar City. He wants the good player and can not get the other two things. Your coach and our coach will not take that sort of player. We still, however, have to compete against that sort of thing. It's just the way it is. For me, I don't mind it at all. When we beat them, it feels that much better.

In Tarkanian's hey day in LV I had to drive up to Cedar City and St. George to collect on the bum checks cashed at the casino and hotel. I saw SUU but thought it was just a nice looking little junior college. But, now, having recently driven through and spending a couple nights to see Bryce and Cedar Breaks, I can see where there is an attraction to a place that is growing as fast as Southern Utah. They might or might not recruit thugs, to play bball, and that same rumor was thrown at Tark. I spoke with an LDS friend and he mentioned that SUU is a training ground for the young missionaries so that is quite a contrast. I prefer to think that good coaching, and recruiting pays off and when the style fits the players who do not enjoy the pace that Montana employs, that school will be better. Dixie State has a place in that recruiting method as well and it will be interesting to see how it plays out with Weber, SUU, Dixie State.

Bring in the element to show the kids the evils of the world, who knows some might like that.

which fish is out of the water? Time will tell...the bball players might be toughening up the missionary crowd so when they return, 100 lbs heavier, and with magically increased playing skills, they will be ripe for BYU and the older crowd.

Oldrunner, you have done it again.....please show 1 FACT to back up your accusations that a SUU player was kept out of jail or the Cedar City community being unsafe because of BB players or any other nonsense....Just 1 documented case will shut me up.....

I'm certainly not going to go back and research the backgrounds of every player at SUU. If I did, and gave out any information about an individual player, I wouldn't feel good about doing so. The information I have is solely of the second hand variety. I have just heard from other BSC BB participants what the SUU coach has said about his own players and what he has to do to keep them in line and eligible. Sacman; You are good friends with Katz, ask him about it. Better yet, ask him why he isn't going after the same guys that SUU is after. Katz seems to be a guy a lot like Rahe and Dequire. I'm guessing that Katz has certain things that will turn him off of some recruits, no matter how talented they are.

You say you would feel bad about staining an individual (admirable) but you have no problem impugning a whole program with second hand info...please don't spread rumors when the results can mark a program or individual without solid proof....Just 2 months ago you were talking about how Montana had been bringing in questionable players, here is the quote "How in the world does UM get tangled up with so many wishy/washy guys? Are they committing before they really know what they are getting into, or are they just of questionable reliability? It just seems like it is too many."......please just stop with the innuendo....

Just stop with the righteous indignation. You are acting as if you've never been on the internet before. This is a fan message board, EVERYTHING here is second hand innuendo.

It's hard to argue with these predictions. Eastern got blown-up and it's wide-open as far as I'm concerned. The Griz lost both games to SUU last year on the road by 1 point and beat Weber 2 out of 3, so we aren't that far behind them, if at all.

I totally agree with you. This season looks to be a full on dog fight, start to finish. There are 5 or 6 teams that could end up on top when the dust settles. These preseason poles are really just to give us something to talk about. I'm glad they picked SUU first. It puts a target on their backs. :thumb:
