Oscar Lopez Jr. Commits!

Averaged 8.8 pts and 3.8 rebounds over his 4 games this season due to injury. Played AAU with Josh Green of the Dallas Mavs and Nico Mannion of the Warriors in HS. Has either 2 or 3 years to play depending on if he takes the COVID year.

What was his injury?

Looks like he was out late dec to mid/late feb w/ a knee injury. Article didn’t specify the extent of the injury but his coach had this to say after helping spark his team to a win over St John’s with 10 points off the bench on 5 of 7 shooting.

“He’s in better shape now than he was right before he got hurt,” Leitao said of Lopez. “He’s worked really hard on his body. He’s a playmaker to begin with. He can get into the paint. He has length and size. He has some bulk. He did a really good job of getting inside.”

Think this is a great signing. They lacked size at the guard position last season.

This is a huge signing. If you look at some of the most effective Griz players in the last 10-15 years I think of Kareem Jamar and Sayeed. Both are in that 6'4-6'5 range and create a difficult matchup in the Big Sky. If they play the 3 they are a difficult matchup for a 6'7 less athletic player. If they play the 1-2 they are too physical for a lot of smaller guards. Martin, Braggs and Lopez are all around 200lbs and hard nosed physical players. All can rebound and all can score. With Blakney adding post defense and scoring and all the young guys getting a year older and physically stronger this Griz team is already way better. The Griz getting pushed around physically won't happen this year.

And since then he has played in 25 or so Big East games.

The size will be advantageous in the paint if he gets there, a definite weakness last season. Solid build can't hurt on the boards as well.

A few solidly built, mid sized wing types gave us fits on D at times last year.

HIgh school backcourt teammate of Vasquez at Bishop Montgomery. His nickname, given by his Mom is "Oso". He obviously was destined to be a Grizzly!
