Rollie Worster Decommitted

I hate to break this to him... but there are much better players out there that UM is looking at.

This. If I were him I would have put out my feelers without the decomit. The chance this scholarship is there in the future is slim

...the 'we didn't want him anyway' line...bullshit. Local, Montana kid. Roots to the school and program, in favor of what, some all-world inner city kid from Bumfuck, USA? JFC! Hope he changes his mind, but good luck to him.

Still a chance he comes back and there has to be more to this story. As long as he doesn’t go to MSU, I wish him the best I really like his ability.

I'm sorry did I say anything about not wanting him?
The point is if he wants to leave thats his choice... Best of luck to him.
But yes there are much better players that the Griz are recruiting, he won't be missed.

It sounds a bit bitter. He is a really good player he’s proved that in AAU ball and local so it’s a loss but if he gets a better opportunity in a better conference can’t really blame him. Griz will be fine and so will Rollie whatever happens.

Being from Montana doesn't mean a whole lot to me... and I am a native.

I want UM to have the best players that want to be at UM and I don't care where they are from.

However, if an out of state player and an in state player are comparable in talent, then yes go with the Montana kid.

I just don't believe that Montana kids should get special treatment just because of their hometown.

lol what? I'd hope we would value talent in the recruiting process more than geography

Being from Montana does mean something. It puts butt in the seats, a player from Hellgate, Sentinal or Big Sky puts even more butts in the seats. Even if he red-shirts is the 12th man off the bench and then plays regularly as a back up his junior and senior years he will still put butts in seats

I guess we will find out about how good he is, let the offers role or not roll in and that should give a pretty good gauge of how good he.

I agree and I agree. Good to "see" you.

MSU is a very very very real possibility. Don’t be surprised when that’s where he lands.

Best of luck to the young man wherever he lands, am curious as to why he changed his mind or if someone else helped him change his mind!

Oh yeah totally agree, the hometown hero is real and valuable and fun, I was just responding to someone who seemed to be saying that pursuing "all-word talent from the inner city" is degrading the program. Like pursuing a kid from the city is inherently sacrificing character and dedication to the program...I think its pretty evident Decure recruits class and character first, then talent, and then maybe considers if you would play well with the crowd as a hometown favorite and that's been a successful method.

Mslacat, I've advocated for more Montana talent for years. Beat that damn drum long and hard. I pass the drum to you.
Mr. Worster goes to Hellgate, six goddamned blocks from Dahlberg. Basketball attendees are Missoula area residents, for the most part. I am not about to jump in my car and drive for hours over snow packed and icey roads to see a bunch of imports play ball. If the locals sense a connection to the team, the more likely they are to get their butts in the seats. Rollie is that connection, or was. I've used the Krystko analogy before...
At least 3,000 empty seats in Dahlberg every game. How many in Worthington Arena? The Cats have at least realized there IS a Montana connection and hired Sprinkle. If Rollie ends up at MSU, someone needs a blanket party.

How ironic. A "tourist" backing the locals.

Me, I'm for the best team we can put on the floor, period. That's just the way it is in college basketball.

You think Duke and Carolina depend on kids from North Carolina, or Kentucky on kids from Kentucky? Or that Bol Bol is from Beaverton, Oregon? Or that St. Mary's would be where it is today were it not for Australian players? Or that Gonzaga got where it is recruiting kids from the Palouse?

Lew Alcindor, aka Kareem Abdul Jabbar, put UCLA on the basketball map. He was from Power Memorial High School in New York.

Our greatest player, Micheal Ray Richardson, was from Denver. Did that keep people away from Dahlberg?

Or how about another player from Colorado in the Grizzly Hall of Fame, Derrick Pope. Did the fans of Missoula boycott when he played? Would Tourist himself?

Jeez, I thought this type of small-town provincialism had been swept away in the age of the Global
Digital Village.

But Tourist. There's always the Lady Griz--eight kids from Montana. Root your heart out.

Let the rest of us aspire to higher goals.

I’m also disappointed that Rollie has decommitted from the Griz. But we will probably never know the real reason for some time if at all. I do know the coaching staff has been very high on him and he still has his senior year at Hellgate and a lot can happen in that year. We were all excited to watch Tony Miller this year but that’s not going to happen. I still have hope that we can redshirt Mac Anderson but that remains to be seen. I do know the coaches put a lot of emphasis in team chemistry and maybe that and other issues is why Miller is in the portal. I have been a strong supporter of Travis and Chris Cobb since I first had the opportunity to meet with them. I’m excited for the season to begin but I can’t say I’m not a little nervous. Until then GO GRIZ.

I'll just throw my two cents in here:

I don't think it is necessarily correct to automatically assume this was college to player forced decommittal. I don't know for sure, because I don't, but this wasn't a pity offering by Travis to make the locals happy. Worster is a D1 caliber player and was receiving interest from D1 schools. The last I knew, Worster's committal was something the program was extremely happy about.

Verbals aren't binding and both players and coaches know that. If this was a player induced one, I gotta think he knows that he is going to get offers from programs that may exceed Montana's station in life. If this was Travis's choice, the same applies. Needs and situtations change for both. I think both should be allowed to some leeway here.

I wish Rollie the best.
