Some Good Basketball Going On ...

The first play-in (sorry "first Four") game turned out to be pretty good. That and what you can see in the NIT shows just how much BBall talent is out there.

But the play-in game didn't start out looking good. Fairleigh Dickinson was flat, while Prairie View built a 7-point lead at half by shooting lights out on treys. (And, honestly, it didn't seem like it should be that close.) In the second half, they extended that lead to 12-13, again hitting their threes. But then the FDU guards -- a guy named Jenkins, in particular -- put the team on their backs. They took over the lead and built it to 9 ... and FDU ended up winning by 6. All-and-all, a very entertaining show.

SDSU, with Mike Daum leading the way, just took the lead over Texas in the NIT, 65-64, with a bit over 8 minutes to go.

Daum, a senior, probably made a lot of NBA money with his effort against Texas. He had already drawn a lot of attention, but doubters always say, "Yeah, he's scored a lot of points, but look at the lousy competition he faced." A double-double and 25 points against a Shaka Smart defense has got to count for something.

Meanwhile, with ridiculously bad numbers (NET rank 252, SOS 328) Norfolk State is leading Alabama -- slightly -- with just over 4 min to go. Guess who wants it more?

In case you missed it ... NSU beat 'Bama in overtime, 80-79.

ASU and St. John’s might have collectively the worst group of shooters I’ve seen on a D-1 basketball court. Horrible shots, shot selection, execution, etc. ASU leads by 15 with 9 minutes left.

By the numbers right now, ASU is shooting fine: 45% on FG, 50% on threes. It's St. John's that can't hit the lake from the back of a boat: 30% on FG, 19% on treys. They've got 8 min. to reach 50 points ... and I'm not sure they can do it.

#15 Bradley Braves giving #2 Michigan State all they can handle. Bradley Braves leads Michigan State 53-52 with 8:46 remaining in the 2nd half.

Yeah, too bad that didn't pan out.

Leaves it open for the Griz to claim the honor of knocking off a Michigan "flagship" school.

Right now, the "traditional" 12-over-5 seed upset is looking like Murray State vs Marquette ... Racers leading 57-40 with about 15 min left in the game. And we picked it in our bracket, so ... GO RACERS!

Meanwhile, GO GRIZ! :egriz:

Well, we had the "traditional" 12-seed of 5-seed upset yesterday (Murray State over Marquette).

Today we get a 13 over 4 upset, with UC-Irvine knocking off Kansas State (which was the 1-seed in the Big 12 tournament). I was looking over the Anteater's (yes, that's their mascot) roster, and Man! they are big: a 7-1, two 6-10 and two 6-9. Tough to shoot over a zone with that much "length."

Edit: And in case you missed it, 1-seed Virginia was down 6 points at the half to 16-seed Gardner Webb. UVA has now taken the lead, but not by much. Meanwhile 2-seed Tennessee has all it can handle against Colgate.

What was Montana's score when they played Irvine?

Final was 60-51 for UC-I. They beat K-State by 6.

And we have another 12-seed over 5-seed "upset" -- Oregon over Wisconsin, 72-54. Technically, this is an upset, but we called this one based on the roll that the Ducks were on. The committee claims they take late-season runs into account, but they sure didn't in the case of Oregon.

Coach K must have had some choice words at halftime ... Duke is obliterating NDSU in the second half.

In other games: We picked Washington to win (on the numbers), even though they were supposedly the worse seed. They did win, but surprised us with the margin, 78-61.

Meanwhile 12-seed Liberty is hanging with 5-seed Missi State, down just 53-50. We did not pick that upset, but still ... GO FLAMES.

OMG!

And another one bites the dust!

The 12-seed Liberty knocked off Missi State. According to the announcers, this is only the fourth time in the history of the Big Dance that we've had three 12 over 5 upsets. The only 5-seed that's going to advance is Auburn. FWIW, Auburn only won by a point, and with a bit better luck for NMSU, they could have lost too.

Some choice words during halftime for Coach Roy Williams ... UNC has gone from 5 down to 19 ahead against Iona with about 2 min to go.

And here's an anomaly shaping up: UCF is killing VCU by 18 in the second half ... which would mean that all the 9-seeds won their games against the 8-seeds. You figure such close seeds would split, but that not what's happened so far.
