Crazy how few games Montana High School Kids get. MHSA is such a joke.

Montana allows as does other states the ability to play in exempt tournaments, most of those like the holiday tournament here in San Diego are played over the Christmas break. The biggest issue, is travel expenses, and most Montana schools would not or could not find a financial reason to play in these tournaments.

Most of the private Catholic Schools play in two or three exempt tournaments (count as a game a day, but does depend on state) a year down here. They have unlimited budget, and can fund their program in ways that public schools can't.

Kyle Owens, DJ Carter-Hollinger, and Vazquez all play at Catholic or private Christian schools. Foothills, where Carter-Hollinger plays, in east county (El Cajon) has played 13 games in those exempt tournaments. A lot of teams in Southern California prefer those exempt tournaments to play in because they don't have to schedule non-conference games. There aren't many teams that run a non-tournament schedule anymore.

Montana and Idaho start later (first or second week of december for Boys) whereas California starts the week of thanksgiving.

Easier to schedule here (San Diego) and you don't have to travel.

Starting our season later is what it is no way around that.
Travel expense is definitely an issue but the fundraisers the teams do raise more than enough money for this. Cooperate sponsors have already pledged money to do holiday tournaments (and pay for shot clocks for that matter) but have been shot down from MHSA. I talk to HS coaches all over the state every one of them is desperate for more games. Bottom line its hard to get better at something if you don't get to do it.
