Montana SB coach, Melanie Meuchel, signed two quality D1 softball players recently. Ava Dolan of Las Vegas was a starter for North Carolina Central last season, and joins the Griz as a junior. Cami Sellers started as first base for Boston College and will join Montana as a sophomore. Both are proven D1 hitters. The players -- both of whom had connections to Montana -- join six incoming freshmen and up the Montana roster to 17. See story below.

Sellers is definitely a big pick up. Started at 1B for BC who finished 2nd in the ACC behind National Champion FSU. Dolan is a little more of a question mark. Dominated in the MEAC her So year but they’re kind of a weak conference, worse then us even. Both bring power though which is the #1 thing we need, except maybe reducing our k’s at the plate. The real exciting thing is this gives us a chance to even out our classes after next year so we don’t have such a high turnover again down the road. Really excited to see what these two can do. Missoula Big Sky product Morgan Johnson might be the only one not excited because adding Dolan to play 3rd will allow McAlister to move back to her natural position behind the plate and basically make Johnson a roll player the remainder of her career, much like Dani Walker was.

Appears rather versatile, though (at least coming out of hs): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gTiBkfI9Ow

Don’t get me wrong, she’s gonna be a welcome addition. I’m just not expecting her league leading and school record setting numbers from last year. If she can hit .300 though and half the homers she hit last year, it’ll be more then anyone should expect.

Just now ran across this... Montana's first (I assume) 2019 softball verbal commit. Jaxie Klucewich from Eagle, Idaho (Nampa-Boise Idaho area)... but formerly lived in Missoula (I think). I had noticed earlier this month some postings about Montana's apparently very successful summer softball camps. Klucewich was apparently part of the elite camp. Her H. S. team took 2nd in the Idaho 5A state championship and she was named to the SIC (Southern, Idaho Conf.) first team as a junior shortstop. Offensively, at least, she bats left.

I'm thinking it's time to start a 2019 commit thread!

Is there any of those NCAA rules on transfers sitting a year when it comes to softball?
I don't believe so. That rule typically applies to the high-visibility sports (football & basketball), with some exceptions, one of which being a player at an FBS school decides to transfer to an FCS school.

I'm not sure if the rule applies if a D1 basketball player decides to transfer to a school that's D2 or lower.

I’m pretty sure Canuck is right. Atleast in the Big Sky, that’s been the case. Our own Haley Young transferee from Mississippi Valley St and was able to play the next year. Most schools pick up a transfer or two from other area schools like Grand Canyon or Pacific and they are able to play.

Good find GJ. I’d expect to see 4-5 commits next year. We only have 2 Sr’s but we’re already 3 below the usual 20 most teams like to balance their rosters around. Only question is will Payton manage the recruiting thread as well as he does football and basketball?

Hell if she an hit .300 it's an outstanding pick up being that our team batting avg last year seemed to hover around a dismal .250 if I'm not mistaken. I like both of these transfers a lot.

Your right on the .250 but if you remove Colburn and Lyons at bats, it was a dismal .208 and a .213 strike our percentage. Reducing our k’s is probably priority #1. We have a vacancy on the assistant coaching staff that needs to be filled by a proven hitting instructor.

Wow good points. 208 is embarrassingly low.
