First scholarship school to cancel football over COVID-19. Is this the first domino to fall?

Unfortunately, yes it is.

At the moment, I'm definitely on the more pessimistic side of things, and that this may indeed the first of many dominoes. The situation is not looking good in many spots right now.

You may be confusing "Morehouse" (D-II) with "Morehead" (FCS). Of course, many D-II schools (including Morehouse) do offer scholarships, but they're usually pretty small. So, I'm not sure this is a good "test case."

That being said ... Conflicting notions here: HBCU football schools typically have high attendance numbers. Morehouse is often among the top three draws in D-II attendance (averaged over 12 thousand in their home games for 2018 ) ... they'd be about #12 in FCS per-game attendance. Giving up that revenue stream has got to hurt. But the stats show that -- for whatever reason(s) -- blacks are at much higher risk from COVID-19.

Rock and a hard place. :(

No confusion, just pessimistic. The news cycle has been a little rough lately, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if more colleges at different levels start to call it off. Hope I'm wrong/ it's not necessary/ reasons for optimism return.

For those of you who care about the reality of how we get to watch college football. Remember Title IX and the consequences to many non-revenue sports?

So what happens to scholarships in the case of a season cancellation? Are they still honored, is eligibility extended etc.?

All good questions. I would hope that (1) the scholarships are honored, and (2) eligibility will be extended. But it's the NCAA, so who the Hell knows?

Related issue: How might this impact the APR (Academic Progress Rating)?

I trust all of you who are hoping for a football season are wearing your masks and practicing social distancing.

There will inevitably be issues because the availability of scholarships is predicated on a certain number of athletes exhausting their eligibility each year. If all athletes are given another year of eligibility which only seems fair, then you have the problem of who gets to keep their scholarship and who doesn't? Besides which there are roster limitations and when you don't have approximately 20 seniors leaving, you are now 20 people over your roster limit. What a headache for the coaching staff (if the season gets cancelled).

Morehouse had 4 home game last year. They had one well-attended game (Homecoming?) of 25,911 but the other 3 games had 4300, 5200 and 8100. So they averaged over 10,000 but they don't seem to consistently draw well. In 2018 they had home crowds of 3309, 3700 and 5200 and counted games in Chicago and Savannah that had over 20,000 as "home" games.

Fordham has canceled their game at Hawaii and will announce this week whether they will cancel the whole season or move it to spring.

I would hope that the ncaa in their infinite wisdom ( ) would work out something that would diffuse the overburden and phase in normalcy ( )
