Spring game?

I miss the days of posting everything here.

I get it, and I still share the links and the convo still happens here. the owner of egriz gets all ad revenue from views on content we all create. Props to Chris for keeping this site up and running for nearly 25 years now. I’d rather just have a little more control over my own main posts and content.

I noticed there was a lot of talk about how good the RBs looked and how much depth they have in that room. There's no doubt that Hashim is a good runner and that Payne, Cook and Ridgeway also ran the ball well. But I'm more concerned about if they can do the things Stevie Rocker could do when they brought him in the game
Obviously Eli was Mr. TD and could break a long one at any time. But even Eli has some things that he wasn't great at which is why Rocker complemented him so well. Stevie was a sure handed receiver out of the back field and could pass protect really well. But having Rocker as a receiver going 1-1 with LBs was a mismatch every time. I think that part of the game is where Eli sometimes struggled with. So I'm hoping that Hashim, Payne or one of these backs can pass protect as well as catch the ball out of the backfield.

What isn’t Eli good at?

Eli isn't great at pass protection and isn't great at running routes and catching the ball out of the backfield. Everytime they ran a wheel route with the rb sneaking out of the backfield or an angle route faking the flat then cutting it back to the inside, those were given to Stevie Rocker because Stevie was better at it than Eli. The times they would throw Eli the ball were mostly on flat routes he would run or bubbles which were easier for him to catch. Eli isn't great at catching the ball which is why Stevie complimented Eli well.

i'm not sure about the pass protection, but for sure his passing routes were mostly to the outside. i don't remember anything over the middle or much up the field. rocker was usually the guy they used for passing situations.

Not true. He is good at all of those things. Rocker was better with at least the pass routes/catching,.

Does anyone know WHY the scrimmage wasn't televised? From the looks of the 'crowd," only Missoula area residents attended. Kennedy's idea or Haslam's.

Eli has 33 catches. Rocker had 27. I believe Rocker was sometimes lined up as a receiver.
consider the # of plays two were involved in, greenster. rocker barely played, but still had nearly as many as many receptions as gilman.

I think there were numerous times they were on the field together. Rocker was excellent receiver though. Paine looked like he could contribute there.

I'm not sure it's so much that Eli isn't as good out of the backfield catching passes, I believe it was more of finding situations where they could rest him for a couple of plays. Rocker was excellent, not saying he wasn't, but the times they threw to Eli, he was very good also. It's been the same the past two years with Eli, as the season went on, you could tell his shoulder was hurting him and they were finding different ways to be successful while letting him get a rest.

It's a top secret. We can't tell you why nor can we show you the game. Oh and keep this to yourself.

I think a combination of targeted, receptions and drops would give us the results. We have had it the past receivers, RBs and TEs that just didn't get the catch ball ... then run with ball.

Around the country less and less teams are doing them. I haven't heard Kennedy talk about it, but the general reasons are about not letting other teams get eyes on our young players to help prevent some amount of poaching and hiding any schematic changes for a new coaching staff.

There is plenty of debate if that is right or not, but this isn't something that UM is pioneering or a giant outlier on. Personally, I liked it being televised when I didn't live in Missoula, but if it keeps one young stud from getting poached, I'm fine with it not being televised.

From ESPN (https://www.espn.com/college-footba...ollege-football-spring-game-changes#cancelled) --
Why, coaches are wondering, should they invite cameras in to showcase their players and schemes for opposing coaches? If a player performs well -- this goes for backups or starters -- it may generate interest from other programs who can offer a better role and/or more money. If a play is executed well, it's something teams can prepare for. There is almost no competitive advantage, and that's before factoring in the possibility of injury.

This isn't a new revelation. That's why these games have been consistently scaled back. They've become glorified practices, and in most cases, coaches believe they are less productive than the other spring practices.

An SEC coach said he records every opponent's televised spring game, and the staff watches them in the summer to observe potential personnel changes with new players, rather than looking for schematic insights, as the games are intentionally kept basic.
